If Streamlabs Desktop will not save a recording, check free disk space and make sure the account running Streamlabs can write to the selected recording folder. Then use the exact error—or the symptom, if there is no error—to choose the next fix. These steps cover missing files, recording that will not stop, poor performance, missing desktop audio, and an unavailable NVENC rescale option.
Start with the recording destination and error message
Streamlabs Support notes that its Record feature may fail to produce a video file in the chosen folder. Its troubleshooting article, last updated April 25, 2025, recommends checking storage space and folder access first: Recording Issues in Streamlabs Desktop.
- Write down the full error. The wording can point to a write-permission problem or a failure that happens only while streaming and recording together.
- Check the selected recording path. In Streamlabs Desktop, open Settings > Output and inspect the recording path. Confirm the destination folder still exists and that your Windows account can save files there.
- Check free space on the drive containing that folder. If it is nearly full, clear space or select another writable destination, then make a short test recording.
- Try a folder you know you can write to. If the test works there, the original destination or its permissions are likely involved.
- Restart Streamlabs Desktop and test it as administrator. Right-click the app and choose Run as administrator. This can help with access problems, but it is not a guaranteed fix for every recording failure.
- If the file is still missing, update or reinstall the relevant dependencies. Streamlabs lists the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable 2017 and current graphics-card drivers among its troubleshooting steps. Restart the app and try another short recording after making a change.
If the error says “Unable to write to”
Prioritize free space and folder permissions. Verify the chosen path and test a location your account can write to before changing encoders or other recording settings.
If the unexpected-error message is blank
Streamlabs also suggests reinstalling the Visual C++ Redistributable or GPU drivers. If the failure occurs while streaming and recording at once, try a recording encoder different from the stream encoder, or set recording quality to Same as Stream. Change one setting at a time and test so you can identify which change matters.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
If there is no error and no file
Check the path and available space, then try the administrator and driver or redistributable steps above. Confirm the recording actually starts, let a short test finish, and inspect the destination folder rather than assuming the file was saved elsewhere.
Check recording settings and computer load
Streamlabs’ recording guide, last updated October 2, 2025, places the recording path, format, encoder, and rate control under Settings > Output: How to Record on Streamlabs Desktop. The best combination depends on your hardware, footage, and whether you are also streaming; treat its quality recommendations as starting points and test a short clip.

Choose an encoder with your system’s workload in mind
- x264 encodes on the CPU. It can be a reasonable choice when your CPU has room to spare, but recording may compete with a game and other tasks for processor time.
- NVENC uses GPU encoding. It shifts encoding work to the graphics card, but that does not mean it has no performance cost on every system.
- Recording while streaming adds another workload. If simultaneous recording fails, test a separate recording encoder or Same as Stream quality as applicable to the error.
While recording, watch system performance and look for dropped frames, stuttering, or other signs that the computer is struggling. Lower the output resolution and make another test if needed. Streamlabs recommends CQP for supported recording workflows and CRF for x264; available controls depend on the selected encoder. Test the resulting quality and file size on your own system rather than treating a rate-control recommendation as a universal preset.
Balance resolution and frame rate against performance
For gameplay, Streamlabs recommends matching the base canvas to the monitor resolution. It recommends 60 FPS for action-heavy footage; 30 FPS may be adequate for static content. If performance suffers, lower the output resolution and compare a short clip. Higher output resolution and frame rate can improve detail and motion, but also affect encoding load and file size. Choose based on what the recording needs to show and what your system can sustain.

Pick a format for what happens next
The recording guide includes the format among the settings in Settings > Output. Consider whether you need a file for editing or only for straightforward playback, and test the chosen format in the application you plan to use next. The available format options and their behavior can vary by app version and configuration; check the controls shown in your installation rather than relying on a setting that is not present.
Fix a recording that will not stop
If the timer resets, a spinner persists, or Streamlabs will not finish recording, check whether Logi Tune is installed. In an issue article dated August 23, 2026, Streamlabs identifies it as a possible cause and reports uninstalling it as a workaround: Unable to Stop Recording on the Streamlabs Desktop App.

- Close Streamlabs Desktop and check whether Logi Tune is installed.
- If it is, uninstall Logi Tune and retry recording.
- If recording still will not stop, contact Streamlabs Support with the app version and a description of what the timer or spinner does.
Fix missing desktop audio
If the video records but desktop sound does not, troubleshoot the audio path separately from the video encoder. Streamlabs Support’s audio article, last updated April 25, 2025, covers these checks: Desktop Audio Not Being Captured.
- Check the mixer. Make sure the desktop audio source is present and not muted.
- Select the right device. In Streamlabs’ audio settings, manually choose the Windows playback device whose sound you want to capture instead of relying on automatic selection.
- Close audio-management utilities. Temporarily exit other audio tools that may be managing or routing the same device, then test again.
- Check Windows exclusive mode. In the playback device’s properties, inspect whether exclusive mode is enabled. Change it for testing if another application may be taking exclusive control, then retry the recording.
- Consider the listed dependencies. Streamlabs’ article also includes Windows C++ redistributables among its troubleshooting steps. A software audio-routing workaround is also described, but treat it as a last resort after checking the source, device, and conflicting utilities.
When NVENC rescale output is missing
This is a version-specific issue, not a general sign that recording is broken. Streamlabs’ May 25, 2026 support article describes the missing rescale option with standard NVENC in Streamlabs Desktop 1.20.4, while NVENC (New) has the option: Desktop – Rescale Output not Working with NVENC Encoding.

Check your installed Streamlabs Desktop version and the current support article before changing your setup. The reported alternatives include x264, which uses the CPU, or a preview build that may be unstable. Consider the CPU trade-off before switching to x264; use a preview build only if you are willing to encounter instability.
Keep a short test-and-diagnose checklist
- Record the exact error and note whether the issue happens during recording alone or only when also streaming.
- Verify the destination, free space, and write access before changing quality settings.
- Change one setting at a time and make a short test recording after each change.
- Watch computer performance while testing an encoder, resolution, or frame rate.
- For missing sound, verify the mixer source and playback device separately from the video settings.
- For controls that are missing, such as NVENC rescale, compare the installed app version with the version-specific support guidance.
