Start by separating a failing broadcast from a playback problem. If OBS shows network-dropped frames or YouTube Live Control Room reports poor stream health, troubleshoot the path from your encoder to YouTube. If that feed is healthy but viewers still buffer, test whether the stream is too demanding for some viewers’ connections or devices. Those problems look similar on screen, but they call for different fixes.
First identify where buffering begins
Check three signals: whether all viewers are affected or only some, whether OBS reports network-dropped frames, and whether YouTube’s Live Control Room shows a stream-health warning. Note when buffering starts and whether it recurs at particular times; a short log can help you compare symptoms with health messages.
- OBS reports network-dropped frames: begin with the outgoing connection to YouTube’s ingest server. OBS says dropped frames indicate an unstable connection or one that cannot sustain the configured bitrate.
- YouTube reports insufficient incoming video: address the feed reaching YouTube. Its Live Streaming API describes
videoIngestionStarvedthis way: “YouTube is not receiving enough video to maintain smooth streaming. As such, viewers will experience buffering.” The status description was last updated 2026-09-14. - OBS is clean and only some viewers buffer: investigate viewer-side conditions and whether the stream’s bitrate, resolution, or frame rate is too demanding for part of the audience. A clean outgoing feed does not prove every viewer can play it smoothly.
- Several signals are present: work through the outgoing-feed checks first, then reassess playback reports. A stream can have an ingest problem and viewers with separate device or network constraints.
OBS’s Stream Buffering Troubleshooting guide (2021-06-09) explicitly notes that viewers can report lag or buffering even when the broadcaster has not dropped frames. Viewers’ locations, devices, and network quality vary.
Check YouTube’s stream health and encoder configuration
Read the specific warning in YouTube Live Control Room rather than changing settings at random. YouTube’s health documentation identifies configuration concerns involving bitrate, frame rate, codec, keyframe frequency, and video ingestion. For an always-on podcast, test the stream with representative audio and movement before relying on it for a long session, then check health messages during operation.

Match bitrate to codec, resolution, frame rate, and stable upload
YouTube’s official encoder guidance gives format-specific recommendations, not a universal bitrate. For H.264 streams at the formats below, the current YouTube Help page (accessed 2026-10-03) lists:

These are YouTube configuration recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular connection can sustain a continuous stream. H.265/HEVC and AV1 have different bitrate ranges; check YouTube’s current table for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you actually use. OBS’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide (2024-09-30) suggests 75% of total upload speed as a starting point for video bitrate. Treat that as a heuristic: available upload can fluctuate, other devices may use it, and service limits still apply. A single speed test does not establish long-term stability.

Set a suitable keyframe interval
YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. If YouTube flags long keyframe intervals or the health panel identifies a keyframe issue, set the encoder accordingly and verify the warning clears. YouTube’s health documentation associates long intervals with buffering.
Check the stream format and health message
For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube documents constant bitrate (CBR) and support for H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 subject to the applicable configuration. Confirm that the selected codec and other encoder settings meet the current YouTube guidance for your stream. The exact health message matters: a bitrate warning, an ingest-starved status, and a keyframe warning do not point to the same adjustment.

If OBS reports dropped frames
Use the OBS counter and YouTube health panel to confirm the outgoing-feed branch, then change one likely cause at a time. After each change, observe whether dropped frames and health warnings improve under the same streaming conditions.
- Try Ethernet if the streaming computer is on Wi-Fi. OBS warns that Wi-Fi may be unstable for streaming. If you already have a wired connection available, test it before buying anything. A cable only addresses a possible connection problem; it will not fix viewer-side buffering or an encoder setting.
- Lower OBS’s video bitrate to a level your stable upload can sustain. Keep the choice within YouTube’s format-specific guidance. Lowering bitrate can reduce image quality, so compare the resulting picture as well as the dropped-frame counter.
- Try a different ingest server if OBS or the streaming service offers one. This tests whether the route to the selected server is part of the problem.
- Check for software or network interference. OBS identifies VPNs, security software, network “optimization” utilities, and outdated network drivers as possible factors. Temporarily isolate one suspected cause at a time; restore security protections after any diagnostic test and follow the relevant vendor’s guidance.
- Review advanced network settings only if simpler checks fail. OBS documents Windows-only options for network optimizations and TCP pacing, and suggests checking IP binding and IP family settings. If an IPv4-only setting makes no difference, return IP family to its default dual-stack setting.
- Use dynamic bitrate as mitigation, not a root-cause repair. OBS says it can reduce bitrate when the connection cannot keep up, but this lowers video quality and does not fix the underlying connection issue.
- Restart the modem and router. If instability remains, contact your ISP before replacing suspected hardware. OBS lists equipment such as a modem, router, cable, network card, switch, or extender as possible causes, but a symptom alone does not identify which, if any, is faulty.
- Escalate persistent issues with evidence. Give your ISP the times the problem occurred, symptoms, relevant OBS logs, and YouTube health messages. OBS notes that provider-side changes or route congestion may be outside the broadcaster’s control.
If viewers buffer but the outgoing stream is healthy
Do not assume OBS or the broadcaster’s ISP is at fault. Ask affected viewers to compare another device or network, and check whether they use a different app or browser or selected playback quality. Those comparisons can help distinguish a viewer-specific constraint from a problem affecting the wider audience.

If reports suggest the stream is too demanding for some viewers, test a lower bitrate, resolution, or frame rate while staying within YouTube’s recommendations. YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats, but that does not ensure every viewer’s connection or device can play the stream smoothly. A global reduction can help constrained viewers but also reduces quality for everyone, so compare audience reports and stream health after changing one setting.

Keep an always-on podcast stream under observation
Before leaving a stream running, test it with audio and movement similar to the actual program and confirm YouTube reports healthy incoming video. During operation, check the OBS dropped-frame counter and YouTube health messages periodically, especially when reports begin. A preflight test and monitoring can catch problems; neither guarantees uninterrupted playback.
