Roblox Error Code 279 (ID 17) means the Roblox client usually could not establish a connection with an experience server. The fastest way to isolate it is to check Roblox Status, try a different experience, then test another internet connection. If Roblox works on a hotspot but not your home Wi-Fi, the router, ISP, or network filtering is the likely cause; if every network fails on one device, investigate the Roblox installation, firewall, antivirus, VPN, or proxy.
This guide reflects Roblox troubleshooting information available in August 2026. Roblox’s menus, supported platforms, and status can change.
Quick fix checklist
- Check Roblox Status, especially Games → Game Join.
- Try two or three unrelated experiences.
- Close Roblox, restart your device, and restart the router or modem.
- Try a phone hotspot or another trusted network.
- Temporarily disconnect a VPN and disable a manually configured proxy.
- Allow Roblox through your firewall and antivirus.
- Update or reinstall Roblox.
- Only after reinstalling, clear local Roblox data if the problem remains.
- Contact Roblox Support with the tests you performed.
What Error 279 (ID 17) means
Roblox calls this “Error Code 279/ID 17: Failed to connect to the Game.” The dialog may say “Connection attempt failed.” It can appear while joining an experience, when a game teleports you to another server, or before the experience loads.
It is primarily a connection-establishment failure—not automatic evidence of a ban, hacked account, or outdated client. Roblox lists other codes separately: Error 277 generally indicates a lost connection, 280 an outdated Roblox version, 267 an experience restriction, and 524 a permission or server-access problem. The exact message and timing matter.

1. Check whether Roblox is down
Open the official Roblox Status page and inspect Games, particularly Game Join, as well as Website, Mobile App, and Player components. During an active incident, local repairs will not restore access; wait for Roblox to resolve it.
The page showed all systems operational, including Game Join, when checked on August 18, 2026. That is only a dated snapshot. An operational page cannot completely rule out a newly developing, regional, or ISP-specific problem.
2. Test another experience
Open two or three unrelated games. If only one fails, its server, teleport destination, scripts, or overloaded experience may be responsible. Roblox’s general connection guidance recommends informing the creator when the problem is isolated to one experience.

A lobby that loads but fails only during a teleport can indicate a destination-server or experience teleport problem rather than a corrupted installation.
3. Restart and change the network
Fully exit Roblox, restart the device, then reboot the router or modem. Where practical, test Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi. Next, connect through a phone hotspot or another trusted network.
Download speed alone does not guarantee a usable Roblox connection: packet loss, unstable wireless, filtering, and blocked UDP traffic can still prevent a join. If a hotspot works, focus on the original router, ISP, school/work network, or public Wi-Fi. If the error follows the device across networks, focus on its software and security settings.

4. Check VPN, proxy, browser, and filtering
- Disconnect any VPN temporarily. It can occasionally change a bad route, but may add latency, create another failure point, or violate a managed-network policy.
- Turn off a manually configured proxy and retry.
- On school, work, hotel, or public Wi-Fi, ask the administrator to check gaming/application restrictions rather than bypassing them.
- If the browser Play button does nothing, update Chrome, Edge, or Firefox; temporarily disable ad blockers and privacy extensions; and allow the browser to open the Roblox launcher. This is different from a client that launches normally but cannot join.
- Changing DNS is an optional diagnostic for name-resolution problems. It will not repair blocked UDP traffic or a Roblox outage.
5. Allow Roblox through firewall and antivirus
Open your firewall or security product’s application-permissions/allow-list area, find Roblox, and allow its internet access on the appropriate network profile. If it is missing, launch Roblox once and return to the list. Update the security product.

For a short diagnostic only, you may temporarily disable the security product, retry, and immediately re-enable it. Never leave the firewall or antivirus disabled. Roblox explains that security software can block its communication in its firewall and router guidance.
6. Ports and router settings
Roblox’s general guide identifies UDP 49152–65535 as the relevant range. Its firewall article also says the client selects outgoing ports dynamically and that blocking UDP on any port can cause problems.
For ordinary home users, first allow the Roblox application and remove filtering; do not copy random port-forwarding instructions from videos. Port forwarding is generally unnecessary and can weaken security. Managed-network administrators should consult Roblox’s official guidance about the UDP range and dynamic port selection.
7. Reinstall Roblox
Reinstall when an update was interrupted, local files may be corrupted, the problem affects only one device, or old firewall rules refer to a previous executable. Uninstall Roblox, download a fresh copy from Roblox or the relevant app store, install it, and restart if prompted. Reinstallation does not delete your Roblox account, Robux, or cloud-saved progress, although local settings may be reset.

rmdir /s RobloxRun it in Command Prompt from the intended user directory, confirm deletion with y, restart Windows, and reinstall. This removes the local Roblox folder; do not run the command casually or from an unintended directory. Roblox’s platform labels separate older Windows versions from Windows 11 64-bit, so treat the support page—not this command—as the authority for your configuration.
Platform-specific steps
Windows 10/11
Restart Windows, test another network, check VPN/proxy and firewall permissions, then reinstall. If browser launching fails, test another current browser and disable extensions temporarily.
macOS
Move Roblox to Trash (or select it and press Command-Delete), reinstall, restart the Mac, and check System Settings/Preferences → Privacy & Security for any required Roblox permission. Roblox labels its instructions macOS 10.13 High Sierra and later; that label is not a complete statement of current system requirements.

- Restart the device.
- Force-close Roblox.
- Reinstall it from the App Store.
- Set date and time automatically and verify they are correct.
- Try another Wi-Fi or mobile connection.
Android
Restart, force-stop Roblox in app settings, reinstall from Google Play, verify automatic date and time, and test another network. Device-specific battery or data restrictions can interfere with communication; check them if Roblox is prevented from using network data.
Amazon Fire
Force-close Roblox, reboot, reinstall, verify date/time, and test another connection. Roblox’s article lists supported examples including Fire 7 (9th generation and newer), Fire HD 8 (8th generation and newer), Fire HD 10 (9th generation and newer), and Fire Max 11 (13th generation and newer). Treat those as the versions named by Roblox’s article, not a guarantee of present compatibility.
ChromeOS
Update ChromeOS, force-close Roblox, reboot, reinstall, verify date/time, and test another network. Roblox’s article describes ChromeOS version 53 and above, but current compatibility can change.

When to contact Roblox Support
Escalate when Error 279 persists across multiple experiences, devices or networks, or after a clean reinstall. Include your username, device and operating-system version, exact error text, approximate time and region, affected experiences, whether a hotspot works, status-page results, and firewall/VPN changes already tested. Do not send passwords, recovery codes, or payment information.

Is Roblox Error 279 a ban?
Usually no. Error 279/ID 17 indicates that the client could not establish an experience connection. Experience bans and access restrictions use different messages and codes.
Why does Roblox work on my phone but not my PC?
The PC may have a firewall, antivirus, VPN, proxy, browser-extension, or corrupted-client problem. Compare both devices on the same network, then inspect the PC settings.
Why does Roblox work on a hotspot but not Wi-Fi?
That strongly points to the home router, ISP route, filtering, or blocked UDP traffic. Restart the router and contact the ISP or network administrator if it continues.
Can a VPN fix Error 279?
It can occasionally change a faulty route, but it is not a guaranteed fix and may increase latency or violate network policies. Test without a VPN first.

Should I open ports on my router?
Usually not. Allow Roblox through the firewall and remove filtering first. Roblox describes dynamic outgoing ports; unnecessary forwarding can reduce security.
Why does Error 279 happen only during teleports?
The destination server, teleport configuration, or a second network connection may be failing. Test other experiences before reinstalling Roblox.
Does changing DNS fix Error 279?
Only potentially when name resolution is the problem. DNS changes do not fix blocked UDP traffic, firewall rules, or Roblox outages.
