Roblox Error Code 279, usually shown as ID=17: Failed to connect to the Game, means the Roblox client could not establish the connection needed to load an experience. It is not automatically proof of slow Wi-Fi, a broken game, or an account ban.
Start by checking Roblox Status, trying another experience and another network, then restarting Roblox and your device. If the problem remains, reinstall Roblox and check firewall, antivirus, VPN, router, and managed-network restrictions. The right fix depends on whether the failure follows the game, device, or network.
What Roblox Error 279 means
Roblox describes Error 279/ID=17 as difficulty establishing a network connection between the client and Roblox servers. Possible causes include firewall or antivirus interference, unstable or restricted Wi-Fi, router or ISP filtering, corrupted local Roblox data, VPN or proxy routing, a problem with one experience or server, or a Roblox service incident. Diagnose the failure before changing settings
- Check the official status page. Look at status.roblox.com for an incident. Status can change, so note the time you checked it.
- Try another experience. If only one experience fails, try another server or a friend’s experience. A game-specific or server-specific problem is more likely than a damaged installation.
- Try another connection. Use a phone hotspot or another trusted network briefly. A hotspot is a diagnostic test, not necessarily a practical permanent connection.
- Restart Roblox, your device, and, when appropriate, your router. Close Roblox completely before reopening it.
- Disconnect a VPN or proxy temporarily. Either can change the route to Roblox; neither is automatically the cause.
- Check automatic date and time. An incorrect clock can interfere with secure connections.

Fix Error 279 on Windows
1. Reinstall Roblox using the matching Windows path
For Windows 7, Windows 8.1, and Windows 10, open Settings → Apps → Apps & features, select Roblox, uninstall it, and reinstall it from Roblox. On Windows 11 64-bit, Roblox’s current instructions use Control Panel → Programs → Programs and Features. Labels can vary with the client and Windows build.
Reinstallation can repair corrupted or outdated local files, but it cannot remove a router block, ISP outage, Roblox outage, or firewall restriction.
2. Remove Roblox local data after uninstalling
Use this cleanup only after Roblox has been uninstalled. Open Command Prompt for the affected Windows account and make sure it is operating in that account’s local AppData directory. Roblox’s documented commands are:

cd AppDataLocal
rmdir /s RobloxWhen prompted, type y. The second command deletes the Roblox folder and its contents. If Command Prompt starts elsewhere, navigate to the intended user’s local AppData folder first rather than assuming the command works from every location. Restart Windows, then reinstall Roblox. This restores client files; it does not repair a blocked network path.
3. Allow Roblox through Windows Firewall
Roblox identifies firewall interference as a frequent connection cause, and antivirus or antimalware products can block Roblox or Roblox Studio independently (Roblox firewall and router guidance).

- Open Windows Security.
- Select Firewall & network protection.
- Choose Allow an app through firewall.
- Allow the current Roblox client on the appropriate private-network profile.
- If it is not listed, use the approved-app controls to add the current Roblox executable.
- Check third-party security software for a separate block or quarantine event.
- Restart Roblox and test an experience.
Do not leave the firewall or antivirus disabled. If you perform a short diagnostic test, re-enable protection immediately and use an application allow rule instead.
4. Check routers, VPNs, and managed networks
Roblox’s general connection article lists UDP 49152–65535, while its firewall/router article says the client is not tied to one specific outgoing port and searches for an available port. Therefore, broad manual port forwarding should not be your first fix. Allow the application, test another network, and ask your ISP or network administrator to investigate if the router, school, workplace, hotel, library, or parental-control system restricts the traffic. Do not bypass an organization’s network policy.

Roblox’s guidance covers macOS 10.13 High Sierra and later. Uninstall Roblox by moving the app to the Trash, then reinstall it. On newer macOS versions open System Settings → Privacy & Security; older releases use System Preferences. Check that Roblox has the permissions it needs to run. Also check macOS’s firewall and any third-party security tool, disconnect a VPN or proxy for testing, and try both Wi-Fi and a phone hotspot.
If Roblox works on an iPhone but not on the Mac, that only shows the network and client paths differ; it does not by itself identify an account problem. If another connection works, focus on the Mac’s permissions, firewall, VPN, or home network.
Fix Error 279 on iPhone or iPad
Roblox’s iOS guidance applies to iOS 12 and later.

- Restart the iPhone or iPad.
- Force-close Roblox. On Face ID devices, swipe up to open the app switcher and swipe Roblox away. On Home-button models, use the app-switcher gesture, then dismiss Roblox.
- Delete Roblox and reinstall it from the App Store.
- Open the device’s date-and-time settings and enable automatic, accurate time.
- Try another Wi-Fi network or a phone connection.
Fix Error 279 on Android
Roblox’s Android guidance applies to Android 6 and later. Menu names vary by manufacturer.
- Restart the device.
- Use Settings → Apps → Roblox → Force stop, or close Roblox from the recent-apps screen.
- Optionally choose Storage → Clear cache for a lower-risk temporary-file cleanup. Clear storage resets local app data and may require you to sign in again, so use it only when you understand that consequence.
- Uninstall Roblox and reinstall it through Google Play.
- Confirm automatic, accurate date and time.
- Test another network.
Roblox does not present changing DNS to Google, Cloudflare, or another provider as a guaranteed Error 279 fix. Treat DNS changes as a later diagnostic experiment, not the primary solution.
Fix Error 279 on Amazon Fire
Roblox lists supported examples including Fire 7 (9th generation and later), Fire HD 8 (8th generation and later), Fire HD 10 (9th generation and later), and Fire Max 11 (13th generation and later).
- Open Settings → Apps & Games → Manage All Applications → Roblox and choose Force Stop.
- Restart the Fire tablet.
- Uninstall Roblox.
- Reinstall it from the Amazon Appstore.
- Confirm the date and time.
- Try another network.
What Chromebook users should do
Roblox’s current Error 279 page includes a ChromeOS section, but the exact Chromebook procedure can change with ChromeOS and Roblox releases. Open the live official Error 279 article and follow its ChromeOS subsection rather than applying Windows commands or Android file paths to a Chromebook.
When none of the fixes work
Stop repeatedly reinstalling Roblox when the evidence points to a network or service problem. Record the following before contacting support:

- Device model and operating-system version
- Whether every experience fails or only one
- Whether another network works
- Whether the Roblox website loads
- The exact message, code, and ID
- The date and approximate time
- Whether a VPN, proxy, antivirus, parental control, school/work filter, or managed router is involved
Contact Roblox Support when the failure follows you across devices and networks or coincides with a status incident. Contact your ISP or network administrator when multiple devices fail only on one connection. A school, workplace, hotel, or library may require you to use an approved network instead of changing its controls.

Is Roblox Error 279 caused by Roblox being down?
It can occur during a Roblox service incident, but the code also results from device, firewall, router, ISP, or experience-specific problems. Check https://status.roblox.com/ and test another experience and network before deciding.
Does reinstalling Roblox always fix Error 279?
No. Reinstallation can repair corrupted local files, but it cannot fix a blocked firewall rule, restricted router, ISP problem, managed network, or Roblox outage.
Should I change DNS to fix Error 279?
DNS changes are not an official guaranteed fix for Error 279. Test another network first; consider DNS only as a later diagnostic step.
Should I open Roblox ports?
Do not begin with broad port forwarding. Roblox lists UDP 49152–65535 in its general connection article but also says the client searches for an available outgoing port. Allow Roblox through the firewall and ask the network administrator or ISP to investigate restrictions.

Does Error 279 mean my account is banned?
No. Error 279/ID=17 is described as a connection-establishment problem and is not evidence of an account ban.
Why does Roblox work on my phone but not my PC?
The PC and phone can use different clients, permissions, firewall rules, VPN routes, and network paths. Compare them on the same connection, then inspect the PC installation and security software.
Why does only one Roblox experience show Error 279?
If other experiences load, the failing experience, a particular server, or its configuration may be responsible. Try another server and check whether other players report the same problem.
What is the difference between Error 279 and Error 280?
Error 279 indicates a failed connection to the game. Roblox separately identifies Error 280 as an outdated Roblox-version issue, so update Roblox when the displayed code is 280.
