If Roblox shows “error while updating worn items,” it usually means the avatar change could not be saved or confirmed—or that the avatar preview did not refresh. The message alone does not identify the cause or mean your account is banned. First check Roblox Status, then try changing one item in the official Avatar Editor. If the item is saved but the picture is stale, use Redraw. If the issue persists, test the browser editor, your connection, and the fixes for your device below.
Start by identifying what failed
Before clearing data or reinstalling Roblox, note what happened: Were you trying to equip or remove an item? Did the item appear in your inventory? Did the avatar preview change, even though the error appeared? Does the problem affect every item or just one? These clues help separate a failed save from a display problem or an item-specific restriction.
Roblox does not document this exact wording as a dedicated error code. It is best treated as a general avatar-update message: the cause could be a temporary service issue, a stale session or client, a connection problem, or an unavailable or incompatible item. A generic message by itself is not evidence of a ban.

1. Check Roblox Status
Open the official Roblox Status page and look for incidents affecting Avatar or Website. Depending on what you are doing, Mobile App, Marketplace, or Asset Delivery may also be relevant.

If a relevant component is degraded, wait for Roblox to resolve the incident and retry before reinstalling anything. If the page reports operational service, that makes a widespread outage less likely, but it does not rule out a regional, account-specific, item-specific, or client problem.
2. Retry with one item, then test the browser editor
- Open the official Roblox Avatar Editor and confirm that the item is in your inventory. On mobile, the interface may be labeled Avatar or Me, depending on the app version and region.
- Unequip the item that triggered the message, then try one known-working item from the same category. Make one change at a time; this is a diagnostic method, not a Roblox requirement.
- On the website, select a category such as hats, hair, clothing, or body and click an item to equip it. Allow a moment for the change to complete before making another change. Roblox’s browser avatar instructions explain the editor and its controls.
- On the mobile app, open the inventory or customization area, select the item, and use Wear This to set it to Yes to equip or No to remove it. Menu labels can vary. See Roblox’s mobile avatar instructions.
Testing the browser editor is useful even if you normally play in an app. If the change works on the website but not in the app, the problem is more likely tied to that client or its local data. If it fails across devices, a service-, account-, network-, or item-level cause becomes more plausible.
3. If the outfit is saved but the avatar looks wrong, use Redraw
If the inventory or outfit reflects your change but the avatar image still shows the old appearance—or a gray block—open the browser Avatar Editor and select Redraw beneath the avatar image. Wait a few minutes, then refresh the page or reopen the app. Roblox says Redraw regenerates avatar thumbnails; it can correct a display problem, but it does not necessarily repair a save request that failed. 4. Try the quick fixes on any device
- Refresh your session. Close and reopen Roblox. If needed, sign out and back in—but only if you know your password and can access any verification method on the account.
- Restart the device and retry the change.
- Update Roblox and your browser or operating system. An outdated client can behave differently from the current editor.
- Switch networks temporarily. Try Wi-Fi instead of mobile data, or the reverse. Avoid a school, workplace, public, or heavily filtered network while testing.
- Temporarily turn off interference. A VPN, ad-blocking or privacy extension, antivirus web filter, or restrictive firewall can interfere with connections. Re-enable protections after the test; do not leave security software disabled as a permanent fix.
Roblox’s connection troubleshooting and desktop troubleshooting cover network, browser, and security-software issues. Avoid changing router settings or opening ports for an avatar-save message unless you administer the network and have a specific reason to do so.
Fixes for Windows PC
If you use the browser Avatar Editor
- Close Roblox tabs and restart the browser.
- Clear the browser’s cached files and Roblox cookies, then sign in again.
- Try a current version of another browser, such as Chrome, Edge, or Firefox.
- Temporarily disable extensions—especially ad blockers and privacy or security extensions—and retry.
If another browser works, the original browser’s stored data or an extension is a likely factor. Re-enable extensions one by one after testing to identify any conflict.
If you use the Roblox Windows app
Close Roblox completely, restart Windows, and check that the app is up to date. The current Microsoft Store listing is called Roblox – Windows; Roblox distinguishes it from an older Store listing called simply Roblox. See Roblox’s information about the Windows app. For a clean test, use one client at a time rather than switching repeatedly between installations. You can also try the browser Avatar Editor to see whether the issue is limited to the app.

If simpler steps fail, reinstall the app using Roblox’s reinstallation guidance. If a normal reinstall does not help, stale local files may remain. As a graphical cleanup:

- Press Windows key + R, enter
%localappdata%, and press Enter. - If a Roblox folder remains, delete that folder. This removes local Roblox files; do not delete other folders.
- Restart Windows, then install Roblox again from an official Roblox or Microsoft Store source.
This is a local-software reset, not a way to restore an item that Roblox has removed or made unavailable. Roblox also publishes command-line cleanup steps for some client problems, but the graphical method is easier to verify and less prone to targeting the wrong folder. Keep firewall or antivirus protection enabled where possible; if you test by changing a security setting, restore it afterward.
Fixes for iPhone and iPad
- Force-close Roblox, then reopen it.
- Restart the iPhone or iPad.
- Update Roblox in the App Store and install available iOS or iPadOS updates.
- Check that the device’s date and time are correct; automatic setting is preferable when available.
- Try the browser Avatar Editor to determine whether the problem is app-specific.
- If it still fails, delete and reinstall Roblox, then sign in again.
These steps follow Roblox’s iOS troubleshooting guidance. Reinstalling removes local app data and signs you out. Roblox account inventory is tied to the account, but reinstalling cannot restore an item that has been removed, moderated, or made unavailable.

Fixes for Android
- Open Android Settings, then Apps or App management, and select Roblox.
- Tap Force stop, reopen Roblox, and retry.
- Restart the device and update Roblox through Google Play.
- If the issue continues, return to Roblox’s app settings, open Storage, and choose Clear data or Clear storage. The exact labels vary by Android version and manufacturer.
- Sign in again. If clearing data does not help, reinstall Roblox through Google Play.
Clearing data resets Roblox’s local app state and signs you out. Make sure you know your login details and can complete any account verification before doing it. See Roblox’s Android troubleshooting guidance.

An item appearing in your inventory does not guarantee that it is currently wearable in every location or with every avatar setup. The item could be unavailable, region-restricted, removed or affected by moderation, or incompatible with another part of the outfit.
- Check that the item appears in your inventory. On mobile, Roblox documents the path as More → Inventory; choose a wardrobe category and subcategory. See mobile inventory instructions. In the browser editor, currently worn items may be listed near the top under Recent.
- Remove the item and try a basic item from the same category.
- Try the original item by itself, without changing other parts of the outfit, then add other items back one at a time.
- If it fails in the app, try it in the browser editor. If possible, compare on another device or network.
If basic items work but one item does not, focus on that item or its combination with the rest of the avatar. Roblox documents that some avatar items can be unavailable in certain regions and that restricted items can affect avatar appearance. Check Roblox’s avatar item availability information. Do not assume that an item is banned solely because an equip attempt failed.

If your avatar turns gray or resets
A gray avatar can result from a thumbnail or item-availability problem; it does not by itself establish why the appearance changed. Try equipping or unequipping an item in the Avatar Editor and use Redraw if available. Check for a Roblox notification as well: a safety-related avatar reset may come with an in-app notice. If that notice offers Report mistake, use that option to provide feedback about the reset. Roblox explains the process in its avatar reset information.
When to contact Roblox Support
Contact Roblox Support if the error persists across clients or devices, a specific item should be available but cannot be worn, or the steps above do not identify the cause. Include:
- Your Roblox username (never send your password)
- The exact error text and a screenshot or short screen recording
- Your device model, operating system and version, and whether you used the app or a browser
- The item’s name and catalog link, and whether you were equipping or removing it
- Whether the problem affects every item or only one, and whether the website editor works
- The date, time, and time zone when it happened
- The network you tested and the troubleshooting steps you already tried
Specific reproduction steps make it easier to distinguish a client problem from an item or account issue. Do not give your credentials to third-party avatar editors, scripts, repair services, or anyone claiming they can fix the outfit by logging in to your account; use Roblox’s official site, app, and support channels.
