If a 24/7 YouTube radio stream is silent, first check whether the problem affects one listener or everyone. Then trace the audio signal from the music source through the encoder and YouTube Live Control Room to the public player. YouTube’s “Your encoder is sending no audio” warning points to what it receives—not necessarily to a broken audio source.
Find where the sound disappears
Check the public stream on another device or network if possible. If only one listener hears silence, inspect that device’s volume, mute, selected audio output, browser or app, and player state. If multiple listeners are affected, investigate the incoming stream and encoder first; YouTube notes that reports across multiple connections can indicate an encoder issue.
Use this sequence to narrow down the fault: source or playback device → encoder meter → encoder recording → Live Control Room preview and health → public player. These are diagnostic clues, not guarantees, so verify each stage directly.

Read YouTube’s stream health messages
Open the stream in YouTube Live Control Room and inspect the preview, health indicator, and any error messages. YouTube says the Live Dashboard and Live Control Room display errors next to the health indicator. Its live streaming error guidance includes “Your encoder is sending no audio” and advises ensuring that the ingestion stream contains one audio stream. It also warns that multiple audio streams can cause ingestion problems.

Record the exact warning and its timestamp before changing settings. The message describes what YouTube is receiving; it does not by itself prove that the source device or physical connection is faulty.
Trace audio from the source into the encoder
- Play a known-good sound. Use a familiar audio item or a test tone at a low, safe level.
- Check playback and capture. Confirm the music application is playing, its volume is up, the operating-system mixer has not muted it, and the selected capture device carries the sound. If the signal passes through a physical connection, check that it is seated and the expected input is selected.
- Watch the encoder meter. In OBS, find the relevant source in the Audio Mixer and watch its meter while the sound plays. If the meter is inactive, check the source, device selection, application and system volume, connection, and filters. OBS’s Audio Mixer Technical Details says, “If the indicator is missing it means there is no audio streaming toward OBS.”
- Check the outgoing mix. In OBS, inspect the source’s mute and fader controls, confirm the source is active in the scene being sent to the stream, and check that it is routed to the stream mix. A moving source meter alone does not establish that the program output contains that sound.
- Listen to a recording. Make an encoder-side recording and play it back. OBS recommends listening as early as possible in the chain and again when the signal reaches OBS; its Audio Mixer Guide describes mixer controls, including mute and monitoring. Monitoring is not a substitute for checking what the stream actually outputs.
OBS sources can be scene-specific. Its Audio Sources documentation also notes that capturing a device both globally and in a scene can cause echo, so avoid duplicating the same device without a reason.

Check the encoder’s audio format and track count
YouTube’s encoder settings guidance lists AAC or MP3 for live audio and recommends 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps for stereo. YouTube’s error guidance can flag an incorrect sample rate, low audio bitrate, no audio stream, or multiple audio streams. Use the current Live Control Room warning and supported codec guidance rather than assuming a preset is correct.
- Confirm the encoder is sending an audio stream, and that it is the intended one.
- For stereo, compare the encoder’s sample rate and bitrate with YouTube’s recommendations.
- Do not add a second audio track or duplicate capture source as a blind fix; YouTube’s no-audio guidance says the ingest should contain one audio stream.
- Change one setting at a time, then check the encoder output and Live Control Room health again.
Compare the preview, recording, and public stream
Check for sound at each point: the encoder meter, encoder-side recording, Live Control Room preview, and public player. YouTube recommends previewing before going live, monitoring audio and video, and verifying local archive files in its streaming tips. Its encoder guidance also says to test before starting, including audio and video movement like those in the planned stream.

If the encoder recording and preview have sound but public playback remains silent, test another client or network. Keep the affected times and exact health messages; if the problem persists, use YouTube’s report-problem route. For an always-on station, include audio verification in routine checks and test backup-encoder or restart procedures during planned maintenance. YouTube’s general tips discuss backup-encoder testing and continuous monitoring, but do not establish a special automatic silence alarm or guaranteed unattended recovery for 24/7 radio streams.
Common causes and fixes
- Wrong playback or capture device: Select the device that actually carries the station audio, then confirm its meter responds.
- Muted application, system, or encoder source: Check volume and mute controls at each layer, not just the player.
- Source is not in the live scene or outgoing mix: Confirm the active program scene includes the intended source and that it is routed to stream output.
- Audio format or track-count warning: Follow YouTube’s current health message, codec guidance, and one-audio-stream advice; change one setting at a time.
- Only one listener is affected: Check that listener’s device, player, and output route before altering the broadcast.
- Sound is present through preview but absent for public listeners: Verify from another client or network, save timestamps and messages, then report a persistent issue to YouTube.
Do not buy a cable, interface, or other audio hardware unless the checks establish a specific hardware fault. The appropriate replacement depends on the source chain and the component that has actually failed.
