The right fix depends on where Star Citizen fails: the RSI Launcher may not open, the game may ignore the Launch button, or StarCitizen.exe may crash after starting. Work through the low-risk checks first—close duplicate launcher processes, restart Windows, check requirements and free SSD space, then verify the game files. Save a full reinstall for last; many launch problems come from local configuration, cache, software conflicts, or a mismatched install path.
These steps apply to Windows PCs. RSI’s requirements and troubleshooting guidance can change as Star Citizen develops, so check the linked RSI pages if a launcher label or requirement differs on your system.
Start with these quick checks
- Quit every RSI Launcher process from the system tray and Task Manager, then restart Windows.
- Check that the game is installed on an NTFS-formatted SSD with enough free space for the game, updates, and Windows pagefile.
- Install pending Windows updates and the current graphics driver from NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel.
- Temporarily exit VPNs, overlays, ReShade, recording tools, RGB and hardware-tuning utilities, and other software that can hook into games.
- In the RSI Launcher, use Settings > Verify (or the equivalent game-file verification control).
- If the game still fails, rename the game’s
USERfolder to preserve it, then test again. - Clear the launcher cache if the launcher itself is blank, stuck, or failing to update.
RSI’s launcher troubleshooting guide covers several possible causes, including corrupted files, insufficient storage, network configuration, security software, GPU issues, and conflicts with other programs. There is no single fix for every crash.

Check requirements, installation drive, and Windows
RSI’s current requirements list Windows 10 64-bit with the latest service pack or Windows 11, a quad-core CPU supporting AVX, AVX2, and FMA3, a DirectX 11.1-compatible GPU with at least 4 GB of VRAM, at least 16 GB of RAM, and a 150 GB or larger SSD installation. RSI also recommends an additional 10 GB of SSD space for the Windows pagefile, requires NTFS for the installation drive, and lists Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 and 4.5.2. Linux and macOS are not currently supported. See RSI’s game and launcher requirements and minimum requirements.

Minimum requirements are eligibility thresholds, not a promise of smooth performance or stability. Leave room for updates and verification downloads; a nearly full or unhealthy drive can cause installation and verification trouble. If you use a laptop, make sure both the launcher and the game are assigned to the dedicated GPU rather than integrated graphics.
Install pending updates through Windows Update. Windows N or KN editions may also need the Media Feature Pack; use Windows’ own optional features or Microsoft’s official download, not third-party component sites. RSI lists the Windows prerequisites and security exceptions in its required Windows files and configurations guide.
If the RSI Launcher will not open
Quit every launcher instance
Clicking the X may leave the launcher running in the system tray. Near the clock, right-click each RSI Launcher icon and choose Quit. Then press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager and end any remaining RSI Launcher processes. Restart Windows before trying again. Multiple launcher instances can interfere with troubleshooting; begin the next attempt with one fresh process.

Clear the launcher cache
If the launcher is blank, stuck, or failing to update, open it, click the RSI icon in the upper-left corner, go to Settings, and select Clear Launcher Cache under application options. Restart the launcher. Menu labels may vary by version; look for the control that clears locally stored launcher data. This is different from deleting the game installation. RSI documents the cache function in its launcher and game cleanup guide.
Check conflicts and prerequisites
Temporarily exit nonessential software for a controlled test: VPNs, antivirus or anti-malware tools, overlays, ReShade, Xbox Game Bar, game-recording software, audio enhancements, RGB or motherboard utilities, and CPU/GPU monitoring or tuning applications. RSI specifically identifies possible conflicts such as Sonic Studio 3 and Sonic Studio Virtual Mixer. Its launcher log may show exit code 3221225477 in connection with those Sonic applications, though an exit code alone does not prove the cause. See RSI’s application conflict guidance.
Do not leave security software disabled. If a short test changes the result, restore protection and add an appropriate exclusion for the official RSI Launcher and Star Citizen installation using your security product’s controls.
If the launcher opens but Star Citizen will not start
Confirm the installation path, then verify files
The launcher can fail to recognize an installation if its configured location does not match where the game is actually stored. Confirm the path in the launcher’s game settings. Then choose Settings > Verify, Verify Game, or the current equivalent. Let verification finish, restart the launcher, and test. Verification can repair broken or corrupted files and is a better first move than downloading the entire game again. Reset the local USER folder carefully
A damaged local configuration can interfere with login or launch. Exit the launcher completely and find the game’s LIVE directory. The default path is:
<install drive>:Program FilesRoberts Space IndustriesStarCitizenLIVEUSERRename USER to USER-backup, restart Windows, and launch the game. The game will build a fresh folder. This can reset local graphics settings, keybindings, and other configuration, so back up custom mappings and user.cfg first. Renaming rather than deleting makes it easier to restore local files if needed. It does not delete your account or character progress. RSI documents this reset, including for error 19000/19005.
Check security software and network symptoms
For a blocked or missing executable, check whether your antivirus quarantined or restricted RSI Launcher.exe or StarCitizen.exe. RSI says some products may need exclusions for the executables or the Roberts Space Industries folder and its subfolders. Prefer a targeted exclusion over permanently disabling protection.
For authentication, manifest, installation, or connection errors—not an ordinary graphics crash—disconnect a VPN for a test, restart the router, or try another network if practical. RSI lists outbound TCP ports 8000–8020 and UDP ports 64090–64110 as potentially relevant to connectivity and installation. These are not a general crash fix, and port forwarding will not normally repair a GPU crash or a corrupted configuration.

Update the GPU driver and remove tuning changes
Install a current driver from the GPU manufacturer’s official site and restart. If the problem began immediately after a driver update, test the previous stable driver instead. Temporarily return GPU control-panel settings to default and remove GPU overclocks or undervolts. RSI says driver updates are the first response to messages such as “DXGI device blocked” or “your graphics card has blocked StarCitizen.exe”; see its DXGI troubleshooting guide.
On a laptop or multi-GPU desktop, assign both the launcher and StarCitizen.exe to the high-performance GPU in Windows graphics settings or the GPU control panel. RSI’s example game executable path is:

Remove file-altering tools and check Easy Anti-Cheat
If an error mentions Easy Anti-Cheat (EAC), untrusted system files, unauthorized changes, or error 0/code 0, remove mods, modified game files, ReShade, and other tools that inject into or alter the game. Do not download replacement EAC files from unofficial sites or try to bypass anti-cheat protections.
For a matching EAC error, exit the game and launcher, remove the EAC folder inside the LIVE installation directory, then reopen the launcher and run Verify or its game-file analysis control. Verification should restore required files; reinstall only if it cannot. Follow RSI’s EAC troubleshooting and EAC guidance for the specific message. RSI identifies Windows 10 and Windows 11 as supported operating systems for EAC in this context.
Rebuild data.p4k only for a relevant file error
If verification repeatedly fails or the error specifically points to data.p4k, close the launcher and go to the LIVE folder. Rename data.p4k to data.p4k.backup, reopen the launcher, and run Verify Game so it can download a fresh copy. This file is very large, so confirm you have enough free SSD space first. Keep the backup until the new installation launches successfully. RSI describes this procedure in guidance for error 30003 and Windows 11 installation troubleshooting.
If the game crashes after a few minutes
A crash after gameplay begins can point beyond launcher cache or file corruption. Close overlays and audio-enhancement software, return CPU and GPU tuning to defaults, and check temperatures and system stability. RAM instability, including an XMP profile, audio-driver incompatibility, GPU trouble, and other hardware problems are possibilities RSI mentions in its troubleshooting guidance—not proof that any one component is responsible.
If the issue began after enabling XMP or changing a clock or voltage, temporarily return that setting to the manufacturer’s default and test. If crashes persist across a verified installation, investigate storage health, memory, cooling, power, GPU and CPU stability, and audio drivers rather than reinstalling repeatedly. Change one variable at a time so the test result is useful.

- “Star Citizen has stopped running unexpectedly”: This is a broad message, not a diagnosis. Verify files, remove conflicts, reset
USER, and inspect the launcher and game logs for an exit code or named fault. - Error 0/code 0, EAC, or untrusted-file messages: Remove mods and injectors, then follow the EAC-specific repair steps above.
- DXGI or graphics-card blocked messages: Update or roll back the GPU driver, remove tuning, and test without overlays; use RSI’s DXGI guide.
- Errors 19000/19005: These may arise around login/session failures. Note the exact wording and test connectivity as well as a
USERreset; consult RSI’s error-specific steps. - Error 30003 or
data.p4kreferences: Check storage and verification; only rebuilddata.p4kif the file is implicated, following RSI’s error 30003 guidance. - Error 4000 or manifest/authentication errors: Treat these first as launcher, account, or network symptoms rather than GPU crashes. Check the install path, launcher state, VPN/firewall, and RSI service or support guidance for the exact code.
Error codes and their remedies can change with game and launcher updates. An error label alone does not establish that a local repair will work.
Advanced: Windows 11 installation-only workaround
RSI documents the following registry command for a specific Windows 11 installation problem involving drive sector-size behavior. It is not a general crash fix. Use it only when the installation symptom matches RSI’s article, and create a restore point or follow Microsoft’s registry-safety guidance before making system changes.

A full reinstall takes time and may not help with unstable hardware, a driver problem, or a network/account issue. Before removing anything, save custom keybindings, mappings, and user.cfg, and keep logs if you may contact support. Confirm the install path and free SSD space. Use the launcher’s uninstall option where possible.
For a full cleanup, RSI documents removing the launcher and game data at these locations:

Reinstall from RSI’s official launcher source, select the intended location, and verify after installation. Do not use third-party DLL fixers, driver-updater utilities, registry cleaners, or unofficial EAC downloads.
Collect logs and contact RSI
If the failure remains, gather evidence before another cleanup removes it:
- Launcher log: Open
%appdata%rsilauncherlogs; the relevant file is generallylog.log. - Game logs: Look under
<install drive>:Program FilesRoberts Space IndustriesStarCitizenLIVElogbackups. - Crash files: Open
%localappdata%Star Citizenand look forpayload.zip. If it is absent, collect the crash files there, such asgame.logandgpu_error.log. - DXDiag: Press Windows+R, enter
dxdiag, press Enter, and save the report.
When filing an RSI Support ticket for account, launcher, or technical help—or an Issue Council report for a reproducible game bug—include the exact error and code, where failure occurs, whether it affects LIVE, PTU, or both, Windows version, CPU/GPU/RAM/storage details, recent driver or hardware changes, what troubleshooting changed, and the relevant logs. Frequently Asked Questions
Will deleting the USER folder delete my character?
No. It resets local game configuration such as settings and keybindings; it does not delete your account or character progress. Rename it first and back up custom mappings if you want to preserve them.

Do I need to reinstall the whole game?
Usually not as a first step. Verify files, clear launcher cache if needed, reset the local USER folder, and test for software conflicts before considering a reinstall.
Can antivirus cause Star Citizen to crash?
It can interfere with the launcher or game files on some systems. Test briefly and safely, then restore protection and use a targeted exclusion if appropriate.
Why does Star Citizen launch on integrated graphics?
On laptops or systems with multiple GPUs, Windows or the GPU control panel may assign the game to integrated graphics. Assign both the launcher and StarCitizen.exe to the high-performance GPU.

Only as a temporary diagnostic test if crashes continue after simpler checks or began after changing memory settings. A result can suggest instability, but does not by itself prove XMP is the cause.
Can a VPN fix a launch problem?
A VPN may affect connection or authentication symptoms, so testing with it disconnected—or on another network—can help isolate those issues. It is not a general fix for game-process crashes.
Does Star Citizen run on Linux or macOS?
RSI’s current requirements say Linux and macOS are not currently supported.
What should I do if verification fails repeatedly?
Check free SSD space and the configured installation path, then review the exact error. If it specifically implicates data.p4k, use RSI’s rebuild procedure; otherwise collect logs and contact RSI rather than repeatedly downloading the game.
