If a Steam game shows “Running” or “Preparing to Launch” and then disappears, first check whether the problem affects one game or every game. That distinction points you toward the likely cause: a single-game file, launcher, or prerequisite problem versus a Steam client, driver, security, or Windows issue. Work through the least disruptive checks first; there is no one fix for every game.
Start by identifying what is failing
Note what happens after you click Play, whether Steam remains open, and whether an error appears. Then try a second Steam game you know works. If only one game fails, focus on that game’s files, launcher, prerequisites, and developer notices. If several games fail, look first at Steam, Windows, drivers, security software, or a shared library drive.
- Steam itself will not open: skip game-file verification and troubleshoot the Steam process or security blocks.
- Steam opens but no games launch: investigate background conflicts, drivers, and Windows.
- One game fails, or closes immediately: verify its files and check its launcher, runtimes, and anti-cheat.
- A black screen or error appears: use the relevant driver, display, or prerequisite checks below.
Steam’s general guidance covers Windows updates, drivers, file verification, non-essential software, and system requirements; it also notes that a game can appear not to launch when it crashes immediately. See Steam’s troubleshooting guide.
Try these low-risk checks first
- Restart Windows. A restart clears stuck processes and is more useful than simply closing the game.
- End hung processes. Press
Ctrl+Shift+Escto open Task Manager. End a stucksteam.exe,steamwebhelper.exe, or process belonging to the affected game, then open Steam normally. - Check Steam’s connection state. If the game needs online authentication, cloud data, or an anti-cheat service, make sure Steam is not in Offline Mode and that the relevant service is available.
- Check requirements. Compare the PC with the game’s minimum requirements on its Steam store page. Steam cautions that a system at or near the minimum can still have launch or performance problems.
Verify the affected game’s files
Steam can replace missing or damaged files without reinstalling the whole game. The current client path is:

- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click the game and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files, then select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the scan to finish, restart Steam, and try the game again.
Verification may reacquire files; it does not necessarily repair a broken mod, save, graphics configuration, separate publisher launcher, or anti-cheat installation. Capcom’s Steam game troubleshooting guide describes the same path and notes that files failing validation may need to be downloaded again.
- Remove mods or custom launch options temporarily if the game began failing after you changed them.
- Update or repair a required secondary launcher through its official vendor.
- If verification repeatedly reacquires the same files, check for antivirus quarantine, permissions problems, low disk space, or drive errors rather than repeating the scan indefinitely.
- Do not delete the entire
steamappsfolder.
Update Windows and the graphics driver
Windows updates
Go to Settings → Windows Update → Check for updates, install available updates, restart, and test again. Windows Update can also provide components such as .NET Framework that some games or graphics software need. An update is not guaranteed to fix a game, however. If the failure started immediately after a Windows update, check the game developer’s support page and Steam Discussions for a game-specific regression before removing updates.
Graphics drivers
Identify the GPU in Settings → System → Display → Advanced display or Device Manager → Display adapters, then get drivers from the manufacturer:
A driver update can resolve a compatibility or startup crash, but a new release can also introduce a regression. If the problem began right after an update, try the manufacturer’s rollback option or a previous stable driver. Laptop owners should follow their laptop manufacturer’s guidance where its hybrid-graphics setup requires an OEM driver. Avoid third-party driver-updater utilities.
On a laptop with integrated and dedicated graphics, test the dedicated GPU: open Settings → System → Display → Graphics, select or add the game executable, choose Options, and select High performance.

Repair missing Visual C++ or DirectX components
Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable
Some games need Microsoft C and C++ runtime libraries. Use Microsoft’s supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads; do not use unsigned installers or DLL-download sites. Microsoft provides x86, x64, and ARM64 packages, and the package architecture must match the application.
- Download the current package from Microsoft. On a typical 64-bit Windows gaming PC, install both the x64 package and the x86 package, since a 32-bit game may need x86 even on 64-bit Windows.
- If the installer offers Repair, choose it.
- Restart Windows and test the game.
Older games can depend on older, side-by-side Visual C++ runtimes, including 2013 and earlier. Do not uninstall every older package as a cleanup step. Microsoft’s installation troubleshooting guidance warns against unsigned or non-Microsoft redistributable installers.
Legacy DirectX components
The DirectX version built into Windows is not the same as the older side-by-side components some games require. For an older game with a DirectX-related error, use Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer, or the game’s official prerequisite installer. DirectX and Visual C++ requirements vary by game; do not download individual DLL files from unrelated sites.
Close software that can interfere
Overlays, capture tools, monitoring utilities, VPNs, and other launchers can conflict with a game or its anti-cheat. Steam advises testing with non-essential software disabled. Close likely suspects one at a time, test the game, and reopen each program that was not responsible.
- Discord overlay and Xbox Game Bar
- NVIDIA App or GeForce overlay and AMD Software overlay
- MSI Afterburner, RivaTuner Statistics Server, RGB utilities, and hardware monitors
- OBS or other capture software, VPNs, network filters, and overclocking tools
- Third-party antivirus overlays and other game launchers
Do not leave security protection disabled. If a specific program is confirmed as the cause, update it or use a narrowly scoped exception where appropriate.

Check security software and Windows permissions
Antivirus, ransomware protection, and firewall
Security software can quarantine a legitimate game file or block a launcher, anti-cheat component, or configuration write. In Windows, open Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Protection history and look for a relevant block. Restore a file only after confirming that the game and file are legitimate. If necessary, add an exclusion for the specific official game or Steam folder—not an entire drive or all executable files.
If the game cannot create configuration or save files, check Windows Security → Ransomware protection → Controlled folder access. For games requiring online authentication, also check that Windows Firewall has not blocked Steam or the game.

Administrator permissions and older-game compatibility
Use administrator mode only as a targeted test when there is a permissions symptom, such as an older game failing to write its configuration. Right-click the game executable, choose Properties → Compatibility, and test Run this program as an administrator; undo it if it does not help. Avoid running Steam as administrator by default, because mismatched privilege levels can cause problems with overlays, launchers, or file access.
For an older title with a clear compatibility problem, use Microsoft’s older-app compatibility guidance or the Compatibility troubleshooter. Test a relevant older Windows mode only for an older game; do not apply Windows 7 or Windows 8 mode automatically to modern games. If the symptom is a black screen or immediate crash, you can also test Disable fullscreen optimizations in the Compatibility tab and revert it if it makes no difference.
Check game-specific launchers, anti-cheat, and security requirements
Steam may be only the first step in a launch chain. If the game uses a separate launcher or anti-cheat, update or repair it using the game’s official installation files or the vendor’s official installer. Launch once from Steam, and consult the developer’s support page for a repair utility or known issue. Do not replace anti-cheat files or DLLs with downloads from third-party sites.

Some games or anti-cheat systems require Secure Boot or TPM 2.0; these are game-specific requirements, not general Steam requirements. Confirm the requirement with the game developer before changing firmware settings. Steam explains how to check these features in its Secure Boot and TPM 2.0 guide. Firmware changes can affect BitLocker, Windows installation mode, and other security features, so do not change BIOS or UEFI settings casually.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf Windows explicitly reports that a legitimate driver cannot load, investigate that driver’s source and compatibility. Microsoft explains that Memory Integrity may block an incompatible driver and warns that turning Memory Integrity off reduces protection. Do not disable it just because a game fails to launch.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Check Steam downloads, library storage, and installation location
If the failure followed a stuck download or update, use Steam → Settings → Downloads → Clear Download Cache. This signs you out but does not delete installed games; the exact client interface may vary.
If several games on one library drive fail, check available space and whether the drive is connected, healthy, and accessible. External and network drives can disconnect or have permission issues. If you moved a game manually, use Steam’s storage-management tools to place it in a library rather than moving files by hand. A small test library on another drive can help determine whether the original library location is the problem.
Use a clean boot to isolate background conflicts
A clean boot starts Windows with essential drivers and startup programs so you can test whether background software is responsible. Follow Microsoft’s clean-boot instructions for Windows carefully:
Best Value
- CPU: AMD Ryzen7 5700X (up to 4.6GHz) 8-Core 16-Thread to easily handle multi-line tasks
- Main board: MSI B550M-A PRO motherboard provides reliable performance and stability
- GPU: Geforce RTX 5060 8GB GDDR7 Graphics Cards (Brand may vary) Support DLSS 4 multi frame generation, ray tracing, and Reflex 2 delay optimization
- RAM: 32GB DDR4 3200MHz (16GB*2) SSD: 1TB M.2 NVMe PCIe
- Power supply: 650W (80plus bronze) certified for energy efficiency and stable performance
- Sign in as an administrator and search for
msconfigto open System Configuration. - On Services, select Hide all Microsoft services, then select Disable all.
- Disable startup applications through Task Manager, then restart and test the game.
- If the game works, re-enable services and startup items in groups until the conflict returns.
- Restore normal startup after testing.
A clean boot is a diagnostic test, not a permanent performance setting. Re-enable items you need once you have found the conflict.
Repair Windows only when the symptoms are broader
If Steam and unrelated applications are also failing, Windows system corruption becomes more plausible. System File Checker and DISM are broad Windows repair tools, not first-line fixes for one game. To run them, open Command Prompt as administrator and execute these commands in order:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth- After DISM finishes, run
sfc /scannow. - Restart Windows and test Steam again.
If the commands report errors or many unrelated programs still fail, back up important files and seek Windows or hardware support rather than repeatedly reinstalling games.
Know when to escalate
Stop changing system settings and contact the game developer when only one game still fails after file verification and prerequisite checks, the issue began with a game update, or logs point to its engine, launcher, or anti-cheat. Contact Steam Support if the client itself is failing across games. If the drive repeatedly corrupts files or multiple unrelated programs fail, investigate storage or Windows health instead.
