To fix Steam’s “Not Enough Disk Space” error, check the free space on the exact drive containing the game’s Steam library, then leave a buffer beyond the displayed download size. If necessary, free space, move the game through Settings > Storage, or clear cached download data before attempting more invasive repairs.
Steam can need temporary working space to unpack, copy, patch, or preallocate files, so a small displayed update does not prove that the update needs only that many gigabytes. The correct remedy depends on whether the cause is insufficient capacity, stale download data, a failing download service, corrupted game files, or damaged Steam client files.

Key takeaways
- Steam checks the usable space on the specific drive containing the game’s library, so free space on another drive may not solve the error.
- The displayed download size is not a universal measure of the temporary space needed to unpack, copy, patch, or preallocate game files.
- Steam can create another library path and move installed games through Settings > Storage without uninstalling them.
- Clearing Steam’s download cache does not delete installed games, but Steam requires you to sign in again afterward.
- File verification repairs incomplete or corrupted game content; it does not replace the free space needed to download replacement files.
- Before uninstalling Steam, preserve the
steamappsfolder and separately check save locations that are not protected by Steam Cloud.
Why does Steam say “Not Enough Disk Space” when you have plenty of free space?
Steam says “Not Enough Disk Space” when the relevant Steam library drive does not have enough usable working space to complete an installation or update, even if another drive has plenty of free capacity. The displayed download amount may cover only downloaded data, while Steam also needs room to unpack, copy, patch, or preallocate files.
Steam does not publish one universal multiplier that applies to every game or update. Community reports describe updates temporarily requiring more space than the number shown in Steam, but those reports are variable observations rather than an official 1.5×, 2×, or 3× capacity rule. See the Steam Community discussion from December 16, 2024 and other community reports about updates with apparently sufficient free space for examples of the reported behavior.

Steam also identifies automatic patches and updates, saved-game files, and custom content downloaded by multiplayer games as possible sources of storage consumption. Under specific System Restore conditions, Steam Support describes 50–100 MB being consumed each time a game starts. That figure applies to the documented System Restore situation, not to every Steam installation or update.
What should you do first?
Follow the troubleshooting steps in this order. Start with the library drive and available capacity before changing Steam files or reinstalling anything.
| Fix | Best for | Risk to installed games | May require extra download |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free space on the library drive | A genuinely full or nearly full drive | Low if you delete only expendable files | No |
| Move the game to another Steam library | Enough capacity exists on another internal drive | Low when Steam’s move workflow is used | Usually avoids a full redownload |
| Clear download cache | Stalled or inconsistent cached download data | Low; installed games remain | The download may need to restart |
| Change download region | Disk-space errors combined with download-service failures | Low | Possibly |
| Repair Steam client files | A damaged Steam client on Windows | Moderate; preserve steamapps |
Steam may refresh client files |
| Verify game files | One game has missing or corrupted content | Low to moderate | Replacement files may download |
| Reinstall Steam | Other recovery steps fail | Highest; uninstalling can remove game content | Potentially substantial |
How do you check the correct Steam drive?
Find the Steam library path used by the affected game, then compare Steam’s required space with the free space on that same drive. Free space on C: does not help an installation located in a Steam library on D:, and free space on D: does not help a game using a library on C:.
Also inspect what is consuming space on the relevant drive. Other games, Windows files, recordings, downloads, Recycle Bin or Trash contents, restore points, save files, and multiplayer custom content can all matter. Do not stop at the exact number displayed in the error: leave a meaningful buffer because the temporary requirement varies by game and update.
If the warning is associated with Steam Game Recording rather than a game installation, check the recording folder and recording settings. Steam says a low-disk-space warning can stop recording, and the recording folder, retained duration, and quality can be changed. The recording setting is a separate storage issue from a game update that cannot fit.

How can you free enough space safely?
Delete or relocate files you no longer need, uninstall games that are not currently used, and empty the operating system’s Recycle Bin or Trash. If another drive has capacity, moving a large game is often safer than deleting it. Avoid deleting unfamiliar folders from a Steam library or the steamapps directory merely to make the free-space number rise.
Freeing exactly the visible download amount may still fail because installation and patching can use temporary working files. Steam has no single official space multiplier for all titles, so use the game’s displayed requirement as a minimum signal rather than a guaranteed total.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Can you move Steam games to another drive?
Yes. Steam’s Settings > Storage page can create a library path on a drive with more capacity and move installed games without uninstalling them. Steam documents the official workflow in Moving a Steam Installation and Games.
- Open Steam and select Settings.
- Open the Storage tab.
- Use the + control to create a Steam library path on the drive with more free space.
- Select the source drive containing the game.
- Select one or more installed games.
- Choose Move and select the destination library.
Using Steam’s move command is preferable to manually dragging a game folder because Steam records the library location through its own client workflow. Moving a game redistributes storage; it does not repair a failing drive, permissions problem, file-system error, or hardware fault.
If the computer needs more local capacity, a 1TB internal SSD can be a practical storage upgrade for a Steam library, but the drive must match the computer’s SATA or NVMe interface, physical form factor, available slot, operating-system support, and installation requirements. Steam also warns that installing Steam itself on an external hard drive is not recommended because of potential performance issues.

Will clearing Steam’s download cache delete your games?
No. Clearing Steam’s download cache does not remove currently installed games, although Steam requires you to sign in again afterward. Open Steam > Settings > Downloads > Clear Download Cache, then confirm the operation. Steam’s official clear-download-cache guidance lists this procedure.

Cached download data can be left behind after a failed or stalled download, and clearing it can reset an inconsistent download state. The action does not permanently create storage capacity in every case and cannot solve a drive that genuinely lacks enough working space.
What if the download fails as well as reporting low disk space?
Try a different download region when the installation error is accompanied by broader download failures. Open Steam > Settings > Downloads and choose a different region that is still relatively close to you. Steam recommends this step for download or server-related problems in its Steam servers and download troubleshooting guidance.
A download-region change is not a direct disk-capacity fix. If the same library drive remains full, a different server cannot provide the missing working space. The result helps separate a storage problem from a download-service or regional-server problem.
How do you repair Steam’s client files on Windows?
Repair Steam’s client files only after checking capacity and trying the less invasive cache reset. Steam’s official Windows procedure is to exit Steam, open the Steam installation directory, delete the contents except steam.exe and the steamapps directory, and restart Steam.

Do not delete the entire Steam folder casually. The preserved steamapps directory contains installed game files, while deleting it can remove or strand that content. Steam’s official troubleshooting guidance describes the client-file repair procedure and the need to preserve the installed-game directory.
Should you verify the game’s files?
Verify files when one game has incomplete, missing, or corrupted content; verification does not replace the free space needed for an installation or update. Restart the computer and Steam, right-click the affected game or open its gear menu, choose Properties, open Installed Files, and select Verify integrity of game files.
Steam says verification can take several minutes. One or more files failing verification can be normal because local configuration files may not be replaced. The process may download replacement files, so do not begin verification when the library drive is already critically full. Follow Steam’s Verify Integrity of Game Files instructions after making enough room for possible replacements.
When should you reinstall Steam?
Reinstall Steam only after confirming the correct drive, freeing capacity, moving games, clearing the cache, and repairing or verifying files where appropriate. Reinstallation is the most destructive option because Steam warns that normal uninstallation removes Steam and installed game content.
Before uninstalling, move or copy the steamapps folder outside the Steam directory. Steam’s uninstall instructions explain this precaution. Do not assume that preserving game files also preserves every save.

How do you protect saves before reinstalling?
Check whether the affected game uses Steam Cloud, then look for saves stored outside Steam Cloud. Steam says many third-party game saves may be found under C:Users[Windows user name]DocumentsMy Games, but each developer determines the exact location. Copy important save folders before uninstalling or deleting game data; do not treat the example path as universal.
Steam’s backup feature is not universal. Steam’s official Steam Backup Feature guidance says many MMO-style and third-party free-to-play games are not compatible with the feature and recommends testing backups after creating them.
Which fix matches the likely cause?
| Symptom | Likely explanation | Recommended first action |
|---|---|---|
| Another drive has free space, but the library drive is nearly full | Steam needs working space on the library drive | Free space there or move the game to another Steam library |
| The update is small, but Steam still rejects it | Temporary unpacking, copying, patching, or preallocation needs additional space | Free a buffer beyond the displayed download amount |
| Only one game fails after an interrupted update | Incomplete or corrupted game content | Make room, then verify the game’s files |
| Several downloads stall or behave inconsistently | Stale cached data or a download-service problem | Clear the download cache; try a nearby different download region if needed |
| Steam itself appears damaged | Corrupted client files | Repair the client while preserving steamapps |
| The drive is genuinely too small for the library | Insufficient long-term capacity | Add compatible storage or permanently redistribute games |
What should you avoid doing?
- Do not assume free space on a different drive satisfies the library’s requirement.
- Do not use an official-sounding fixed multiplier such as exactly twice the listed game size; Steam does not publish one formula for every update.
- Do not expect clearing the download cache to permanently free all needed space or fix every disk-space error.
- Do not delete
steamappsunless you understand that installed game data may be removed or stranded. - Do not assume verification will work on a critically full drive; replacement files may need to download.
- Do not assume a new SSD fits every computer; check SATA versus NVMe, physical form factor, slots, and installation requirements first.
What is the shortest safe troubleshooting path?
Check the affected game’s library drive, free a buffer on that drive, and retry. If another drive has room, create a library there through Settings > Storage and move the game. Then clear the download cache if the download state appears stuck, try a nearby different download region if downloads also fail, verify files only after making room, and reserve client repair or reinstallation for later. Preserve steamapps and separately back up saves before any uninstall.

Why does Steam say not enough disk space for a small update?
Steam may need temporary working space on the library drive to unpack, copy, patch, or preallocate files. The download number is not a universal total, and Steam does not publish one fixed multiplier for every game or update.
Will clearing Steam’s download cache delete my games?
No. Steam’s Clear Download Cache command does not remove installed games, but Steam requires you to sign in again afterward. The command resets cached download data; it does not guarantee permanent storage capacity.
Can I move Steam games to another drive?
Yes. Open Steam Settings, select Storage, use the plus control to create a library path on another drive, select the source drive and game, and choose Move. Steam’s workflow moves the installed game without uninstalling it.
How do I reinstall Steam without losing my games and saves?
Before uninstalling Steam, move or copy the steamapps folder outside the Steam directory and separately back up saves that are not stored through Steam Cloud. Steam warns that normal uninstallation removes installed game content, and save locations vary by developer.
The Bottom Line
The most reliable fix for Steam’s “Not Enough Disk Space” error is to make room on the drive that contains the affected Steam library—not merely on a drive with a larger free-space number. When that drive cannot be expanded, move the game through Settings > Storage. Use cache clearing, download-region changes, verification, client repair, and reinstallation only when the symptoms point to those separate failure modes.
