Start with the symptom, not a random settings change. Streamlabs Desktop crashing or refusing to open, failing to go live, showing a black capture preview, missing desktop audio, and losing frames have different causes and fixes. Follow the section that matches what you see, then change one thing at a time.
Why is Streamlabs Desktop not opening or crashing?
A crash can have more than one cause; Streamlabs’ troubleshooting guidance offers general fixes rather than one universal diagnosis. If you can open the app, enable crash reporting before trying to reproduce the problem.
- Update Windows and your graphics drivers.
- Install or repair both the x64 and x32 Microsoft Visual C++ 2022 Redistributables. If installation fails, use Windows Apps to repair the newest Microsoft Visual C++ entries, then restart the computer.
- Download Streamlabs Desktop again and run the installer as administrator. Also try launching the app as administrator.
- Check that your firewall or antivirus software allows Streamlabs Desktop.
- If the app opens, go to Settings > Get Support, enable reporting additional information on a crash, and restart Streamlabs. If it crashes again, share the generated filename with Streamlabs support.
If Streamlabs will not open, the Crash Troubleshooting Guide describes an alternate workflow using the CrashMemoryDump folder under %appdata%. If the steps above do not help, submit a support ticket; include your Windows version, Streamlabs Desktop version, exact error text, and any crash-report filename.
Why can’t Streamlabs go live?

- Install the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributables if needed, then restart the computer.
- Log out of Streamlabs Desktop and back in.
- Run Streamlabs Desktop as administrator.
- Verify that the stream key is correct and that the output settings are appropriate for the platform.
- If you stream to Twitch, check that two-factor authentication is enabled where required by Twitch.
The guide mentions Bind to IP for a specific invalid-path or connection-URL problem. Treat it as a targeted diagnostic for that case, not a setting everyone should change. Do not clear Streamlabs’ cache as a first step: the guide warns that scene collections and settings may be lost. Contact Streamlabs support before attempting that recovery.
Why does Streamlabs show a black screen?
First identify which area is black. A missing game in the preview calls for capture troubleshooting; a black Editor pane with sources still visible in Output is a narrower Studio Mode issue covered separately below.
Why is Streamlabs not capturing my game?
Try the game-capture fixes in this order, checking the preview after each change:

- Delete the existing Game Capture source and create it again.
- Restart Streamlabs Desktop as administrator.
- In the source’s capture options, choose a mode that targets the game. If relevant, try toggling the anti-cheat hook.
- Disable third-party in-game overlays temporarily, then test again.
- Install the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable if it is missing, and update graphics drivers and related software.
- If Game Capture still fails, try running the game in borderless fullscreen and capturing it with Window Capture. Change capture mode when the problem is limited to a particular game; use Display Capture only when you need to capture the whole display.
Capture compatibility varies by game. Streamlabs notes that some games—including Destiny 2 in its guide—may not be capturable with Game Capture. The guide does not establish a universal compatibility matrix, so a failed Game Capture source does not necessarily mean Streamlabs is broken.
Is only the Studio Mode Editor pane black?
Use the HDR workaround only if the Editor area in Studio Mode is black while the Output pane continues to show sources. Streamlabs identifies HDR as related to this specific issue and recommends temporarily turning HDR off in Windows Display settings. It describes this as a workaround, not a general fix for every black preview.

- In the Streamlabs mixer, make sure the desktop audio channel is not muted.
- Close audio-management utilities temporarily; they can conflict with audio capture.
- In Windows, open the properties for the playback device you use. If the problem persists, consider disabling the device’s exclusive-mode priority.
- In Streamlabs, select the same playback device explicitly instead of leaving Desktop Audio set to Default.
- As an alternative, disable global desktop audio and add an Audio Output Capture source to the scene, selecting the playback device there.
If those checks fail, Streamlabs’ audio guide also suggests installing the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributables. Virtual audio routing is another option, but it adds setup and routing complexity; treat it as a later fallback rather than the first fix.
Why do I get dropped frames or poor stream performance?
Streamlabs distinguishes three kinds of frame loss. Identify which one is reported before changing settings: the remedy depends on whether the bottleneck is the GPU/compositor, the encoder/CPU, or the network.

A speed-test result by itself does not prove that the connection stays stable during a stream. If network-related drops continue, investigate the local network, network drivers, and ISP connection.

Choose an encoder and bitrate for your setup
x264 uses the CPU to encode; hardware encoding offloads that work to the GPU. The trade-off depends on the system: moving work to the GPU can ease CPU load, while the quality and performance you get at a given bitrate depend on the hardware and settings. There is no encoder or bitrate that is best for every computer and connection.
Streamlabs describes Dynamic Bitrate as a setting that adjusts bitrate in response to network conditions. It requires a current version of the app, so check the installed version and current in-app labels before looking for it. The Streamlabs optimizer and example profiles can be useful starting points, not guarantees of stable output.
Streamlabs’ 2026 getting-started guide gives these Twitch-oriented NVENC examples, alongside CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval, the Quality preset, and 2 B-frames:

These are examples from Streamlabs’ Twitch-oriented guide, not requirements for every streaming service or hardware setup. The same guide suggests 720p30 as a performance-oriented starting point and notes that setups differ. If the local game or preview is also struggling, reduce the game’s load first; if only the stream loses frames, focus on the encoder or connection category indicated by Streamlabs.
