Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems“Internal Exception: java.net.SocketException: Connection reset” does not identify one specific Minecraft problem, so there is no single guaranteed fix. In Java Edition 1.18, start by checking whether the disconnect affects one server or several, then compare your connection path and client setup. Those results are clues for deciding what to try next—not proof of who caused the reset.
What the error means
Java’s Java SE 17 documentation describes SocketException as an error creating or accessing a socket. That broad definition does not explain why a particular connection ended. A Minecraft network error report hosted by Mojang records java.net.SocketException: Connection reset during clientbound play traffic, but that report is for Minecraft 1.21.5—not evidence of a specific cause in 1.18.
A Minecraft Forums user reported a similar disconnect when joining a Realm on Minecraft 1.18.1 with OptiFine. The user said friends could join, and that restarting Minecraft, signing out and back in, and restarting the PC did not solve their case. It is an individual report, not proof of a widespread 1.18 bug or that OptiFine caused the problem.
Work through the checks in order
1. Find out whether it is one destination or several
Try joining another server you normally use, if available. If the error occurs only on one server or Realm, that narrows the investigation to that destination and its compatibility or availability, but does not prove the server is at fault. Contact its owner or administrator and ask whether there are known connection or version requirements.

- Play and share with friends on console, mobile and Windows 10
- discover community creations in the new in-game store
- access new mini games and game modes through servers
If multiple unrelated servers fail, investigate the connection path and client setup next. This one-server-versus-several comparison is a practical diagnostic clue, not an official Minecraft rule.
2. Compare your network path
If you are on Wi-Fi and your hardware supports it, try a temporary wired connection and compare the result. This is a way to test whether changing the path makes a difference; it is not a required purchase or a guaranteed fix. The 1.18.1 Realm report mentioned Ethernet but did not say that switching to it solved the disconnect.

- Learn your way around one block at atime in the new tutorial mode
- Craft all sorts of items from boats todiamond armor and create enormousstructures
- Team up with friends in eight-playeronline multiplayer and four-player splitscreen modes
3. Check the version and client setup
Confirm that your Minecraft version and any mods or client changes match what the server accepts. If practical, try the server with the expected unmodified client setup. The 1.18.1 report involved OptiFine, but a single account does not establish that OptiFine causes this error.
4. Try simple, reversible steps
- Close Minecraft and reopen it, then retry the connection.
- Restart your device and try again.
- Check whether other servers still work after each attempt so you can tell whether the scope of the problem changes.
These steps are easy to test, but they may not help: the player in the 1.18.1 Realm report said restarting Minecraft and the PC did not resolve their case.

5. Escalate according to what you found
- Only one server or Realm fails: share the error and your game version with its owner or administrator and ask them to check the server side and accepted client versions.
- Several destinations fail: focus on your local connection path and client setup, and note whether changing networks or using an expected unmodified client changes the result.
Be cautious with community fixes
A Minecraft forum reply describes the message as receipt of a TCP reset and suggests checking connection conditions, DNS, VPN software, and render distance. Those are community suggestions, not tested or officially validated fixes. Changing DNS, using a VPN, disabling security software, or altering render distance is not established as a reliable solution. Avoid disabling protections or making network changes unless you understand the consequences and can reverse them.
The available evidence does not establish an official Minecraft 1.18-specific root cause or a universal remedy. A reset report tells you that communication ended; it does not, by itself, identify whether the server, network path, or client setup was responsible.
