How to Fix the “Detected an Unrecoverable Error” Issue on Uplay (Ubisoft Connect)

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Uplay has detected an unrecoverable error and must shut down” is a generic launcher crash, not a diagnosis. Uplay is now called Ubisoft Connect, so use the current client and avoid downloading old installers from third-party sites. The safest first repair is to close Ubisoft Connect completely, rename its cache folder to cache.old, and launch it again. Do not delete your installed game folders or save files.

Ubisoft’s current PC launcher is Ubisoft Connect: official download page.

What the error means

The message can be triggered by invalid launcher data, a damaged installation, permissions, security software, overlays, Windows or driver compatibility, or a failed Steam/Epic account handoff. The timing of the crash narrows the search:

  • Before the login screen: prioritize the launcher cache, local configuration, permissions, background software and the installation itself.
  • Only when one game starts: investigate that game’s files, graphics components, overlays and platform integration.
  • Every Ubisoft game fails: focus on Ubisoft Connect, security software, Windows profile permissions and account/session state.

Before changing folders

  • Confirm that you know the Ubisoft account email, password and two-factor authentication method.
  • Close Steam, Epic Games Launcher and other clients involved in starting the game.
  • Record the exact message and any crash-dump path. Reports commonly show a path such as C:Program Files (x86)UbisoftUbisoft Game Launchercrashes; deleting those dumps does not repair the launcher.
  • Create a restore point or copy the launcher folder if practical.
  • Never delete your Steam, Epic, Ubisoft game-library or save folders as part of this procedure.

Quick fix: rebuild the Ubisoft Connect cache

  1. Exit Ubisoft Connect from the notification-area (system-tray) icon.
  2. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager. End tasks named similarly to Ubisoft Connect, Ubisoft Game Launcher, upc.exe or UbisoftConnect.exe. Names vary by client version; do not terminate unrelated Windows processes.
  3. In File Explorer, open C:Program Files (x86)UbisoftUbisoft Game Launcher, or the installation directory shown by your shortcut.
  4. Rename the folder cache to cache.old.
  5. Start Ubisoft Connect directly, not through Steam or Epic, and allow it to create a new cache.

Renaming is safer than deleting: it preserves a rollback copy and diagnostic evidence. Microsoft-hosted troubleshooting guidance also identifies resetting the Ubisoft Connect installation cache as a repair step: Microsoft Q&A. If Windows says the folder is in use, a Ubisoft process is still running. If the client opens normally, test the game before removing cache.old.

If the cache reset fails

Clear temporary files

  1. Press Win + R, enter %TEMP% and press Enter.
  2. Select the contents and delete what Windows allows. Skip files that are locked; active temporary files are normal.

Reset older local Uplay data cautiously

Some older Uplay reports describe renaming %LOCALAPPDATA%Ubisoft Game Launcher to Ubisoft Game Launcher.old, then starting the client again. Paste %LOCALAPPDATA% into File Explorer if AppData is hidden. This may sign you out and reset local state; it is a community-reported workaround, not a guaranteed current Ubisoft Connect fix. Keep the renamed folder until you have confirmed that the client and saves behave normally.

Restart Windows

Use a full restart to clear file locks and pending processes. Afterward, open Ubisoft Connect directly. If direct launch works but a Steam or Epic launch fails, skip a second reinstall and investigate the platform handoff.

Test administrator mode once

Right-click the Ubisoft Connect shortcut and choose Run as administrator. If it works only when elevated, investigate folder permissions, Controlled folder access and antivirus blocking. Do not make elevated launching your permanent workaround without fixing the underlying permissions, because mixed elevated and normal launches can create ownership inconsistencies.

Close interfering software

For a short, controlled test, close overlays, hardware-monitoring or overclocking tools, screen recorders, RGB utilities, VPN clients, other launchers, driver-updater tools and graphics injectors. If you test without third-party antivirus or firewall protection, disconnect from untrusted networks, re-enable protection immediately and add an exception only when the security product identifies a trusted Ubisoft installation as blocked. Do not permanently disable security software.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Update Windows and graphics drivers

Install pending Windows updates and drivers directly from NVIDIA, AMD or Intel, then restart. Avoid third-party driver-updater utilities. This is a compatibility check, especially for a crash during game launch, not proof that an outdated driver caused the launcher error.

When only one game crashes

If Ubisoft Connect opens and the failure occurs after selecting one title, repair that title rather than the whole launcher.

Store Verification path
Steam Open the game’s Properties and choose the installed-files verification option.
Epic Games Open the game menu, choose Manage → Verify.
Ubisoft Connect Open the game’s properties or management menu and use the available verify/repair control; wording varies by client version.

File verification addresses a game installation, not a launcher that crashes before login. Also test with overlays disabled and confirm that the game is owned by the Ubisoft account currently signed in.

Steam, Epic and Ubisoft account linking

A platform handoff can look like a launcher crash. Check whether Ubisoft Connect shows the game, whether it repeatedly requests a login, and which Ubisoft account is connected to Steam or Epic. Do not repeatedly unlink and relink accounts: digital entitlements may remain tied to the original Ubisoft account. Confirm ownership with Ubisoft Support before changing an established link. A community report describes a Rainbow Six Siege launch failure after an account was unlinked and linked elsewhere, but that report does not establish a universal bug: example report.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reinstall Ubisoft Connect without deleting games

  1. Note the current launcher installation path and the locations of your game libraries.
  2. Uninstall Ubisoft Connect through Windows Installed Apps.
  3. Restart Windows.
  4. Download the client only from Ubisoft’s official page and install it.
  5. Sign in to the Ubisoft account that owns the game.
  6. Use the client’s locate, discover or manage options to reconnect existing installations if they are not detected automatically.

Do not delete C:Program Files (x86)UbisoftUbisoft Game Launchergames or your Steam, Epic or other library folders. A reinstall replaces the client executable but may leave corrupted AppData, permissions, security blocks, profile problems or account mismatches; that is why reinstalling alone does not always help.

Use the symptom to choose the next branch

Crash before login

  1. Rename the installation cache.
  2. Rename the local AppData launcher folder if present.
  3. Clear temporary files and restart.
  4. Test background software and security controls.
  5. Perform a clean reinstall and inspect logs.

Launcher works, one game fails

  1. Verify the game files.
  2. Disable overlays and check graphics drivers.
  3. Confirm the Ubisoft account and store ownership.
  4. Launch directly through Ubisoft Connect, then test the store handoff.

Failure began after an update

Reset the current client’s cache, confirm that the official Ubisoft Connect client is installed, check Ubisoft service status, and test with nonessential background applications closed. Do not install an old Uplay build from an unofficial site; it may be unsupported, insecure or unable to connect to current services.

Collect logs when repairs do not work

  1. Search Windows for Event Viewer and open it.
  2. Go to Windows Logs → Application.
  3. Find an error timestamped when Ubisoft Connect crashed.
  4. Record the faulting application, faulting module, exception code and file path.

Also record the exact error, Windows version and build, Ubisoft Connect version if visible, game title and purchasing platform, Ubisoft account used, GPU and driver version, recent Windows/driver/launcher/antivirus changes, and any crash-dump location. These details distinguish a launcher failure from an application or platform conflict.

Windows 10, Windows 11 and Linux

The cache, restart and reinstall workflow is intended for Windows PCs; menu names can differ between Windows 10 and Windows 11. Do not treat a video’s compatibility claim as an official support guarantee. Linux and Steam Deck users should not assume Windows AppData instructions apply: Uplay failures have also occurred inside Proton compatibility environments, documented in Valve’s Proton issue tracker. Use a Proton/Wine-prefix-specific troubleshooting path instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When to contact Ubisoft Support

Escalate after a clean client reinstall when multiple games remain affected, ownership or account linking is involved, the problem follows a service event or widespread update, or Event Viewer repeatedly identifies the same crashing module. Include your logs, crash-dump path, account and platform details, and the exact steps that reproduce the failure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Uplay still available?

Uplay is the legacy name; Ubisoft Connect is Ubisoft’s current PC launcher. Use the official Ubisoft Connect download page rather than an old installer.

Will renaming the cache delete my games?

No. Renaming the launcher’s cache changes local client data, not installed game libraries or save folders.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does reinstalling not always fix the error?

Uninstalling can leave AppData, permissions, security blocks, background conflicts or account-linking problems unchanged.

Can I install an old Uplay version?

Avoid unofficial legacy installers. They may be insecure, unsupported or unable to connect to current Ubisoft services.

Does this procedure apply to Steam Deck?

Not directly. Steam Deck and other Linux setups use Proton/Wine prefixes, so Windows paths and controls may not apply.
