Fortnite’s “Login Failed” or “Unable to log in to Fortnite servers” message can come from an Epic Games outage, a platform-network problem, a local connection or game issue, or an account-linking problem. Start by checking Epic’s status page; if Fortnite Login or Game Services is experiencing an outage, wait for Epic to resolve it before changing settings or reinstalling the game.
Status checked August 18, 2026: Epic listed Fortnite Login, Game Services, and Website as operational that day. That status can change, and Epic’s incident history includes a resolved login issue affecting some players in Mexico on August 14, 2026.
Diagnose the problem before changing settings
The message does not identify which part of sign-in failed. Fortnite may need to authenticate with Epic, the network service for your console or device, your internet connection, and—in some cases—the Epic account linked to your platform profile. Use the pattern of the failure to decide what to try first.
| What you notice | Likely category | First action |
|---|---|---|
| Several players or devices cannot log in | Epic or platform service | Check Epic and platform status pages |
| Other online games also fail | Platform network or home connection | Test the device’s connection and restart the router |
| Only one device fails | Local session, software, cache, or game files | Fully close Fortnite, restart the device, and check for updates |
| Only one account fails | Credentials, account security, restriction, or account link | Check whether that account can sign in to Epic in a browser |
| The error follows a QR code or account-linking code | Wrong Epic account or an existing platform link | Check connected accounts before unlinking anything |
Try these low-risk fixes first
- Check service status. Review Epic’s public status page for Fortnite Login and Game Services. Check the status service for your platform as well: Xbox status, PlayStation Network status, or Nintendo network status. Status is time- and region-sensitive; compare any incident’s time and affected region with your own problem.
- Close Fortnite completely. Do not leave it suspended in the background. Reopen it once.
- Restart the device. This can clear a stale game or authentication session.
- Restart the modem or router. This briefly disconnects other household devices and may clear a transient connection problem; it will not fix an Epic outage or account-link conflict.
- Check for updates. Install pending Fortnite, operating-system, console, or launcher updates.
- Test another online service or network. If possible, try another online game or a different connection, such as a mobile hotspot. If Fortnite works on another network, the home connection, DNS filtering, or routing may be involved.
If Epic reports a login outage, wait for the incident to be resolved and retry later. Repeated retries, reinstalling, and unlinking accounts do not repair a service outage.

Fix the error on Xbox
Epic’s dedicated Xbox troubleshooting sequence covers cache, a fully closed game session, router restart, DNS, the Xbox profile, and—only as a last resort—a console reset. Follow it in order; its steps are specifically for Xbox, not a universal fix for every platform. See Epic’s Xbox “Login Failed” instructions for model- and system-specific cache directions.
- Clear the Xbox cache using the current instructions for your console model. Avoid substituting a power-cycle procedure from another model or an outdated guide.
- Quit Fortnite fully: press the Xbox button, select Home, highlight Fortnite, press the controller’s Menu button, select Quit, then relaunch the game.
- Restart the modem or router and try signing in again.
- Test a different DNS setting only if the earlier steps did not help. Epic recommends changing Xbox DNS as a troubleshooting step, but DNS changes are not guaranteed to fix the error or improve speed. Record the original setting first and use a reputable provider’s currently published addresses; restore the original setting if the test does not help. DNS will not resolve an outage, suspended account, or incorrect credentials.
- Remove and re-add the Xbox profile only if you know the Microsoft account credentials and can sign back in. Removing a profile is more disruptive than restarting the game.
- Reset the console only as a last resort. Epic specifies Reset and keep my games & apps. Confirm you can access your accounts before proceeding, and follow Xbox’s current reset instructions.
If the problem remains after Epic’s sequence, Epic directs Xbox players to Xbox Support.
Fix the error on PC
Try the least disruptive steps first. Launcher labels can change, so use Epic’s current Fortnite technical support hub for current launcher and game instructions.
- Check Epic status, then fully exit Fortnite and the Epic Games Launcher. Reopen the launcher and try again.
- Restart Windows and install pending Windows, Fortnite, and Epic Games Launcher updates.
- Sign out of the launcher and sign back in to the Epic account you intend to use.
- If the launcher offers a current file-verification option for Fortnite, use it before reinstalling. Verification can check local installation files; it cannot fix an outage or account problem.
- If the error persists, test whether firewall rules, security software, DNS filtering, or parental controls are blocking the connection. Make any security-software test temporary and controlled, then restore protection immediately. Do not permanently disable a firewall or antivirus.
- Clear the launcher’s web cache only by following Epic’s current instructions for your launcher version. Reinstall Fortnite only after service, account, and network causes have been considered; a reinstall takes time and bandwidth.
A VPN is not a default fix. It can change routing or region behavior and may make sign-in less reliable.

Fix the error on PlayStation
- Check Epic’s status and PlayStation Network status.
- Close Fortnite completely, restart the PS4 or PS5, and install pending Fortnite and system updates.
- Test the console’s internet connection. If other online services fail too, restart the router and investigate the connection before reinstalling Fortnite.
- If appropriate for your console, sign out of PlayStation Network and sign back in to the intended PlayStation profile.
- If you suspect a local game issue, reinstall Fortnite after checking that you know which Epic account is linked to the profile. Use current PlayStation support instructions for any safe-mode cache or database options; steps and labels differ between PS4 and PS5.
If the error began during account linking or the wrong Epic account appears connected, investigate the link before removing it.
Fix the error on Nintendo Switch
- Check Epic status and Nintendo network status.
- Close Fortnite instead of leaving it suspended, then restart the Switch.
- Confirm the system date and time are set automatically, and install pending game and system updates.
- Test the Switch’s internet connection. Restart the router if other online services are affected too.
- If needed, follow Nintendo’s current instructions to clear the game’s cache or reinstall Fortnite. Epic’s Fortnite support hub lists separate Switch troubleshooting topics.
- If the error occurs during first-time setup, after changing users, or after entering a linking code, check which Nintendo profile and Epic account are involved before changing account connections.
Reinstalling the game does not by itself remove an Epic account or its cosmetics, but you must sign back in to the correct linked account to see the associated progress and purchases.
Fix the error on Android or iPhone and iPad
Mobile installation and availability differ by operating system, device, and market. First confirm that your device supports the current Fortnite build using Epic’s current mobile support information.
- Check Epic status, update Fortnite and the device operating system, then force-close and reopen the game.
- Restart the device. If possible, test both Wi-Fi and cellular data; a difference can point to a local network or routing issue.
- Temporarily test whether a VPN, DNS filter, or parental-control setting is interfering, then restore your usual protection and settings.
- On Android, clear the app cache if the device provides that option. Do not assume the same menu or procedure applies on iOS or iPadOS.
- Reinstall only after confirming device compatibility and that you know the credentials for the correct Epic account.
When the failure is during account linking
A login error after scanning a QR code, entering a code, or setting up a new console may be an account-link problem rather than a network fault. The browser could be signed in to a different Epic account, the platform profile could already be connected elsewhere, or the code may have expired.

- 3-Way Trigger Locks – Set the travel distance of the triggers with three different positions to pull off quicker actions in your favorite FPS games or go full throttle in a high-end race car
- Stop unlinking and relinking accounts while the connection is unclear.
- In a browser, sign in to the Epic account you intend to use, then open Epic’s account connections page.
- Check which platform accounts are connected and confirm that the console or device profile belongs to the intended player. A private browser window can help test whether the wrong browser session is being used, but sign in only to the account you mean to connect.
- If progress or cosmetics seem missing, do not assume they were deleted. Confirm which Epic account owns them and which platform profile is active.
- Contact Epic Player Support if you cannot identify the existing link. Unlinking the wrong profile can make it harder to determine where the player’s progress and purchases are associated.
If only one account cannot log in
Try signing in to Epic’s website with that account, and check whether another account works on the same device. If only one account fails, focus on account access rather than repeatedly changing network settings. Check that you have the right credentials and platform profile, and look for an email-verification, password, parental-control, security, or account-restriction issue. If you suspect compromise or cannot regain access, use Epic Player Support through the official support hub. Never share a password, two-factor authentication code, or recovery code in a comment or support forum.
If the problem started after an update
A new season or update can coincide with scheduled maintenance, heavier login demand, a regional service degradation, an incomplete update, or outdated device software. Epic’s status page separates components and records incidents; compare the reported time and region with yours. If services are operational, check for unfinished updates, restart the device, and on PC use the launcher’s current verification option before considering a reinstall.
When to contact support
Contact Epic for Fortnite authentication, Epic account access, or unclear account links. Contact your platform’s support service when the platform profile, console network, or device itself appears to be the failing layer. When reporting the issue, include:
- Platform and device model;
- the exact error wording and any error code;
- your region and when the failure occurred, including time zone;
- whether Epic and platform status pages showed an incident;
- whether another account, device, online game, or network worked;
- the troubleshooting steps already attempted.
Screenshots can help, but crop or obscure passwords, authentication codes, recovery codes, and other sensitive account information.
