First check for a Blizzard service issue, then compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet or another network. Those tests help separate a service or ISP-route problem from a fault on your device. If you keep disconnecting, stay out of Competitive Play until your connection is stable.
Start by identifying where the problem is
Use the symptoms to choose the next test instead of changing several settings at once. The error can come from Blizzard services, the route between your ISP and Blizzard, your home network, security software, game files, or a platform-account issue. Other websites working does not rule out a route-specific problem.

Try the quick checks first
- Stop queueing for Competitive matches while disconnects continue.
- Check Blizzard’s official support and customer-service announcements. If other players are reporting the same problem or Blizzard has announced an incident, local repairs will not restore the service; wait and try again later.
- Exit Overwatch 2 and restart it. Restart the Battle.net or Steam app as well if you play on PC.
- Fully restart your PC or console. On a console, do not just resume the game from sleep mode.
- Pause downloads, cloud backups, streams, and other traffic-heavy activities on your network.
- If possible, connect by Ethernet and test again. If Ethernet is not practical, try closer to the router and temporarily bypass an extender or mesh node.
- Test another online service on the same device. If Overwatch 2 alone fails, try it on a different network, such as a hotspot, as a diagnostic test.
Blizzard’s general connection guidance recommends restarting network equipment, using a wired connection, and limiting bandwidth-heavy applications (connection troubleshooting guidance). A hotspot is only a comparison: mobile networks can have different latency, routing, and NAT behavior.
Check Overwatch 2’s network statistics
Network statistics can show whether the problem is slow delivery or missing packets. Blizzard’s guide says the performance display is toggled on PC by default with Shift + Ctrl + R. On console, open Options > Video > Show Network Stats. The display includes latency-related information and incoming and outgoing packet loss (Blizzard’s network diagnostics guide).

- High latency: data is arriving slowly. Congestion, distance, or routing can contribute.
- Packet loss: some data is not arriving consistently. Check the incoming and outgoing loss indicators while playing.
- Loss or disconnect indicators: the client may have stopped receiving expected data from the lobby or game server.
Blizzard says consistent packet loss above zero may indicate a client-to-server data-delivery problem. Small values may not be noticeable, and Blizzard cautions that its warning icons can appear at low thresholds. Treat the display as a clue, not a diagnosis of exactly where the fault lies.
Restart your modem and router safely
A power cycle can clear temporary router state. It is not a factory reset: do not press a recessed reset button unless you intend to erase router settings and know how to restore them.
- Exit Overwatch 2 and shut down your PC or console.
- Unplug the modem and router from power. If they are separate devices, unplug both.
- Wait about 60 seconds.
- Reconnect the modem and wait until it has re-established service.
- Reconnect the router, if separate, and wait for Wi-Fi or Ethernet service to return.
- Start your PC or console and test Overwatch 2.
Prefer Ethernet for the test. If you must use Wi-Fi, move closer to the main router; where practical, avoid a crowded 2.4 GHz connection and pause uploads or downloads. Blizzard’s Overwatch 2 technical troubleshooting guide includes connection optimization and security-software checks among its remedies.

Reset Windows IP and DNS information
On a Windows PC, these commands can refresh local network information. They will not fix an outage, faulty hardware, or packet loss farther along the ISP route.

- Open Start, search for Command Prompt, and select Run as administrator.
- Run each command separately, pressing Enter after each:
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
ipconfig /flushdnsipconfig /releasereleases the current DHCP address lease.ipconfig /renewrequests a lease from the router or DHCP server.ipconfig /flushdnsclears the computer’s local DNS resolver cache.
Restart Windows, open Battle.net or Steam, and test the game. Blizzard’s support material covers these IP and DNS steps (Blizzard IP and DNS troubleshooting). You can also test a different DNS provider if name resolution appears to be the issue, but record your original settings first. Changing DNS does not directly cure packet loss or every game-connection problem.
Check VPNs, firewalls, and other security software
First turn off any VPN, proxy, or traffic optimizer temporarily and test Overwatch 2 without it. A VPN changes the route and may sometimes avoid a route problem, but it can also add latency, jitter, or packet loss, move you to another region, or cause authentication complications. If the game works only with a VPN, that suggests the changed route may matter; it does not establish that the VPN is a good permanent fix.

Firewall, antivirus, endpoint-security, parental-control, and traffic-filtering software can also interfere with the game or launcher. If you need to test third-party protection, disable it only briefly, launch the game, and then turn it back on. If that test changes the result, create allow rules for the installed Battle.net app, Overwatch 2, and Blizzard Update Agent where applicable. Use the security app’s allow-an-app feature and select the actual installed files; paths differ by drive and installation method. Do not leave protection disabled. Blizzard lists allowing the game and launcher through security software as a troubleshooting step (Overwatch 2 technical troubleshooting).
Repair game files before reinstalling
File repair is most relevant if the issue followed an update, the launcher reports a file problem, or another symptom points to damaged or incomplete files. It is unlikely to correct an ISP routing fault.
Battle.net installation
- Open the Battle.net desktop app and select Overwatch 2.
- Open the gear or options menu beside the Play button.
- Select Scan and Repair, start the scan, and let it finish.
- Relaunch the game and test it.
Steam installation
Use Steam’s game-file verification feature for a Steam installation; Battle.net’s Scan and Repair instructions do not apply to every Steam copy. The precise Steam labels can vary as its interface changes. Reinstalling the game or launcher is a later step, after network comparisons and repair, because a fresh install cannot fix an external route or outage.

Console checks: PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch
For console error LC-202, Blizzard’s support article describes the message as “Disconnected from Game Server” and recommends resetting network devices, optimizing wireless connectivity, and consulting the relevant console maker’s support resources (Blizzard console LC-202 guidance).
- Check the PlayStation Network, Xbox network, or Nintendo service status before changing router settings.
- Fully restart the console, install available system and Overwatch 2 updates, and confirm the console clock is set automatically.
- Test wired Ethernet if supported; pause downloads and avoid resuming a suspended match after a disconnect.
- Check the console’s NAT status. A strict NAT may complicate connectivity, but it does not by itself prove that port forwarding is required.
Blizzard’s LC-202 guidance also raises unlinking and reconnecting a Battle.net account as a possible console step in some cases. Treat account changes as a late-stage option and follow Blizzard’s current instructions: confirm which Battle.net account is linked and where your progress and entitlements are associated before unlinking. Repeated unlinking can create restrictions or support complications.
When the test points to your ISP or route
If Overwatch 2 works on another network but not on your home connection, focus on the difference between those networks rather than reinstalling immediately. A different result can implicate the router, ISP, DNS, or route to Blizzard, but it does not identify which one on its own. Faster download service is not a substitute for a stable connection with little packet loss.

- Record the date, time, and time zone of each incident, plus your platform, region, and how often it happens.
- Compare wired and Wi-Fi results, and note whether other Blizzard services or other online games also disconnect.
- Contact your ISP and describe intermittent packet loss or a possible route-specific issue. Ask it to check the line and modem signal quality, not simply to sell you a faster plan.
Do not start with port forwarding. Exact requirements depend on platform and service, and old third-party port lists may no longer apply. Double NAT, carrier-grade NAT, mesh systems, and strict NAT can complicate router changes; forwarding cannot repair packet loss upstream of your home. Avoid placing a console or PC in a DMZ as a casual fix.
When to contact Blizzard Support
Contact Blizzard if the disconnect persists across multiple networks, affects Blizzard services while other online games work, follows an account-link change, or remains after local checks and file repair. If multiple players report the same time-matched problem, check official announcements and wait for service recovery rather than repeatedly changing local settings.
