The Steam Friends Network Unreachable error means Steam cannot currently connect to its Friends and chat services; it does not necessarily mean your internet is down. First check Steam service status, fully restart the client, and test on another network. Those checks help distinguish a Steam-side problem from a local client, router, firewall, or ISP issue before you try disruptive fixes.
Check whether Steam or only Friends is unavailable
Start with Valve’s Steam network troubleshooting guidance and its server-status link. Then check whether the Store, Community pages, account sign-in, and downloads work, and ask a friend whether they see the same issue. A widespread Steam problem or maintenance window is a reason to wait and retry—not to reinstall Steam.
If the Store and downloads work but Friends does not, the issue may be limited to Friends or Community services, stale client state, or filtering of that feature’s connections. A working browser or game does not prove Steam Friends is reachable: Steam features and games can use different services and network paths. Status indicators can also show general Store or sign-in health while a narrower service is impaired.
Try the quick, low-risk checks
Fully restart Steam
- Exit Steam from the client menu.
- Check the system tray and quit Steam there too if it is still running. On Windows, open Task Manager only if Steam remains active, then end the remaining Steam process.
- Reopen Steam and sign in. If Friends is still unreachable, restart the computer and test again.
Closing the main window alone may leave Steam running in the tray, so make sure the client has actually stopped.

Test another connection
Try Ethernet if available, or switch between 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi if your router provides both. You can also test Steam using a phone hotspot; be mindful of your mobile-data allowance. Valve recommends comparing network conditions and testing a wired connection where possible in its network troubleshooting guidance.
- If Friends works on the hotspot but not on home internet, focus on the router, ISP route, DNS path, firewall, or network filtering.
- If it fails on multiple unrelated networks, consider the Steam client, computer security software, account, or a Steam service issue.
- If Ethernet works but Wi-Fi does not, investigate wireless signal, band, or router settings.
Power-cycle the modem and router
- Exit Steam.
- Unplug the modem or gateway and router. If they are one combined device, unplug that device.
- Wait at least 30 seconds, then reconnect the modem or gateway first.
- Wait for it to reconnect fully. If the router is separate, reconnect or restart it next.
- Open Steam and check Friends again.
Valve’s network-device troubleshooting steps likewise advise letting equipment restart fully.
Clear Steam’s download cache
- In Steam, select Steam > Settings > Downloads.
- Select Clear Download Cache and confirm.
- Sign back into Steam when prompted, then test Friends and chat.
Clearing the download cache does not remove installed games, but it does require another login. It may resolve stale client state; it will not fix a Steam-side outage. The menu labels may vary slightly by client version or platform. Valve documents this procedure in its download-cache support article.
Leave Steam beta participation if you use it
A beta client can behave differently from the standard release. In Steam, open Steam > Settings > Account, find Beta Participation, select Change, and choose the option to leave beta participation or return to the standard release if offered. Restart Steam and test again. The exact label can vary by build. Valve documents the beta participation settings path.

If you cannot change the setting through the client, Valve documents the -clearbeta launch option. On Windows, create a shortcut to steam.exe, open its Properties, and add a space followed by -clearbeta after the executable path in Target. For example:
"C:Program Files (x86)Steamsteam.exe" -clearbetaLaunch Steam using that shortcut. The option is for leaving the Steam client beta, not a general Friends-network repair. Valve lists it among its Steam launch options.
Check firewall, antivirus, VPN, and proxy interference
Make sure Steam is allowed through the operating system firewall on private networks. Third-party antivirus web shields, encrypted-traffic inspection, application controls, VPNs, proxies, bandwidth shapers, packet filters, overlays, and parental controls can also affect Steam connections. Valve’s sign-in troubleshooting guidance notes that other programs can interfere with Steam.

- Temporarily test with one suspected filter or security feature paused at a time.
- Check Friends, then immediately turn protection back on.
- If pausing a product restores Friends, create a narrow Steam exception or ask that product’s vendor for an application-specific rule.
Do not leave your firewall or antivirus disabled. On a managed school or work device, contact the administrator rather than bypassing security policy.

Check restricted networks and Steam’s required ports
Valve’s Steam port requirements include these remote ports:

These are Valve’s documented Steam requirements, not a special port list guaranteed to repair Friends. University networks and proxies may block required traffic; hotels, public Wi-Fi, and workplace networks can impose similar restrictions. If you do not administer the network, ask its administrator or use a permitted personal connection.
Most home users should not begin by forwarding ports on the router. Port forwarding is different from allowing Steam’s outbound traffic through a computer firewall, may not help with a Steam outage or local firewall rule, and may be ineffective behind carrier-grade NAT. Valve also says required Steam ports cannot be remapped to HTTP or another custom range.
Use advanced connection tests only if needed
Test Steam with TCP
Valve documents -tcp as a launch option that starts Steam using TCP rather than UDP. It can be a diagnostic test if a network filters or mishandles UDP, but it is not a standard or guaranteed fix for this error and changes Steam’s connection behavior.

- Exit Steam completely.
- Edit or create a shortcut to
steam.exe. - Add a space and
-tcpafter the executable path in the shortcut’s Target. - Launch Steam from that shortcut and test Friends.
- Remove the option if it does not help; keep it only if the test clearly resolves the problem.
"C:Program Files (x86)Steamsteam.exe" -tcpValve’s launch-option documentation describes the option; its networking documentation explains that Steam networking can use UDP and relayed traffic where appropriate.
Consider DNS only when name resolution appears to be the problem
A DNS change may help if Steam hostnames are failing to resolve, but it cannot fix a Steam outage, blocked UDP traffic, a firewall rule, a beta-client issue, an account restriction, or a damaged installation. Treat DNS as a later diagnostic—not a guaranteed fix or a reason to change providers without evidence.

If the problem persists across networks after a cache clear, beta opt-out, and security-software test, a client repair may be worth considering. Valve describes a Windows repair approach in a different troubleshooting context: exit Steam, remove Steam installation files while preserving steam.exe and steamapps, then let Steam update itself. This is a general client-repair procedure, not a fix specifically verified for the Friends error; follow Valve’s repair guidance carefully.

Reinstalling Steam is a last resort. Before doing so, preserve the steamapps folder and local saves that are not synchronized to the cloud. An outage, blocked network path, or firewall rule will not be fixed by reinstalling the client.

Notes for macOS and Steam Deck
The core diagnosis is the same on macOS: check Steam service status, restart the client, compare another network, and review VPN, proxy, and security filtering. The Windows shortcut launch-option procedures above apply to Windows; do not assume their UI steps transfer to macOS.
On Steam Deck, check Steam status, test another Wi-Fi network or band, and try wired Ethernet through compatible USB-C Ethernet hardware if available. Managed networks and proxies can restrict Steam there too. See Valve’s Steam Deck network and Wi-Fi troubleshooting.
When to contact Steam Support
If Friends remains unavailable after the low-risk checks, submit the issue through Steam Support. Include the exact error text, when it began, which Steam features still work, whether another network changes the result, and screenshots. Never post your password, account credentials, authentication codes, or sensitive login information publicly.
