Stop trying to sign in for now. Steam’s “There have been too many login failures from your network in a short time period” message usually points to a temporary restriction associated with the network or public IP—not necessarily a ban on your account. Wait at least 30 minutes without attempting another login, then make one careful attempt. If it still fails, test a trusted alternate connection and use Steam’s official recovery tools if the problem follows your account.
What the error means
The wording says the failures came “from your network.” That commonly indicates a temporary anti-abuse limit associated with the connection or public IP address. It does not, by itself, establish that your account is permanently banned or compromised. Steam does not publish a universal cooldown for this exact message in the support information cited here; community reports describe waits ranging from about 30 minutes to many hours or a day (user reports of varying wait times).
You may see the message even if you did not personally enter a wrong password repeatedly. A household, school, office, apartment, hotel, mobile carrier using carrier-grade NAT, or VPN can put many people behind the same externally visible address. Another user’s attempts may therefore affect your connection. Community explanations of shared addresses are anecdotal, not a published description of Steam’s rate-limiting system (Steam Community discussion).

- Missing Steam Guard code: this is a separate verification or email-delivery problem.
- “Could not connect to the Steam network”: investigate the client, local network, firewall, ISP, or service availability.
- Unexpected account or contact-detail changes: treat these as possible compromise and begin official recovery promptly.
The safest first steps
- Stop submitting login forms. Close Steam sign-in pages and stop trying from the client, mobile app, and third-party Steam sign-in pages. Repeated attempts make it harder to tell whether the restriction has cleared.
- Disconnect a VPN or proxy. Turn it off in its app or device settings, and check for a browser proxy. A VPN is not a dependable fix: its shared exit address may itself be associated with many attempts (Steam Community discussion of VPNs and proxies).
- Check the credentials without guessing. Make sure you have the right account name and password. If you are uncertain, wait for the network restriction to clear before using Steam’s “I forgot my Steam Account name or password” recovery flow.
- Wait at least 30 minutes without another login attempt. If the error remains, leave it alone for several hours or try again the following day. The 30-minute minimum is a cautious starting point, not an official Steam cooldown guarantee.
- Make one careful attempt on your usual connection using the normal Steam website or desktop client.
- If it still fails, test one trusted alternate connection, such as your phone’s hotspot. Avoid public Wi-Fi for account recovery when possible. If Steam works there but not on your usual connection, the original network or public IP is a likely factor; the test does not prove the account is clear on every route.

If a different network works
A hotspot changes the route and often the public IP, so success there suggests the problem is tied to the original connection rather than proving anything about an account ban. Community users have reported mobile data working when Wi-Fi did not, but this is a diagnostic observation, not a guaranteed unlock method (Steam Community reports).
Shared residential, school, office, apartment, hotel, and carrier-grade-NAT connections can expose many users through one public address. A router restart may obtain a different address from some ISPs, but it may leave the address unchanged—particularly with a fixed address, long lease, or carrier-grade NAT. Do not repeatedly power-cycle the router as a substitute for waiting. If the issue keeps returning only on one home connection, your ISP can explain whether the connection uses a fixed address or carrier-grade NAT.

If the problem happens only in a browser
Steam says browser privacy settings, deleted cookies, and cleanup utilities can prevent it from remembering an authorized browser and lead to repeated Steam Guard prompts (Steam Guard and browser guidance). Cookie troubleshooting may help a browser-session problem, but it does not necessarily clear a server-side network restriction.
- Close all Steam tabs.
- Clear cookies and site data for Steam domains, or use a private window for one controlled test.
- Confirm that your browser allows cookies for Steam.
- Temporarily disable extensions that alter cookies, scripts, privacy settings, or user-agent behavior.
- Make one login attempt; do not keep resubmitting the form if the network error remains.
Avoid automatic browser cleaners that erase Steam cookies after every session. They can make Steam treat a familiar browser as new and prompt for Steam Guard again.

If Steam Guard codes are missing
Steam Guard may ask for an email or mobile-app code when you sign in from an unrecognized device. That is separate from the network-failure message (Steam Guard overview). First allow the network restriction to expire; do not repeatedly request new codes while the login is throttled.
For an email code, Steam advises checking the email address linked to the account and the spam or junk folder, adding [email protected] and [email protected] to trusted senders, and allowing up to 30 minutes for delivery. If it still has not arrived, attempt another login to generate a new code (Steam’s Steam Guard code help).

If you lost access to the phone with your authenticator, Steam’s recovery options may include text-message verification when a phone number is attached, a previously saved recovery code beginning with “R,” or authenticator removal through the recovery flow. If self-service verification is unavailable, contact Steam Support (Steam Mobile authenticator guidance). Removing an authenticator reduces account security; set it up on your replacement device after regaining access.
If your password may be wrong or the account may be compromised
A password reset can fix incorrect credentials, but it is not necessarily a cure for an active network throttle. Use Steam’s official account-name and password recovery page if you cannot verify your sign-in details. Steam’s broader sign-in recovery flow also covers stolen accounts, missing Steam Guard codes, and lost authenticators.

If you received an unexpected password or security-change notification, or your email, phone, or authenticator changed without your action, treat the situation as possible account theft. Start Steam’s official recovery process and secure the email account tied to Steam. Never give a password, Steam Guard file, recovery code, or email password to someone claiming to be support; do not use third-party “Steam unlock” services.
If only the desktop client cannot connect
The Steam desktop client and web browser use different access paths, so one can work while the other fails. Steam’s client troubleshooting guidance points to network connectivity, conflicting programs, maintenance, and local network or ISP problems as possible factors (Steam client connectivity help).
- Restart Steam and your computer, then make one login attempt after the cooldown.
- Check whether firewall or security software is blocking the client; avoid disabling protection permanently.
- If you are also seeing DNS-resolution symptoms, Windows users can open Command Prompt as administrator and run
ipconfig /flushdns,ipconfig /release, thenipconfig /renew. These refresh local DNS and DHCP state; they do not guarantee a new public IP or remove a Steam-side restriction. - If the failure affects multiple devices and networks, use Steam Support rather than treating it as a client-only problem.
When to contact Steam Support
Move to official support if you still cannot sign in after waiting and testing a legitimate alternate network, if account recovery does not resolve uncertain credentials, if Steam Guard is inaccessible, or if account details changed unexpectedly. Go to Steam Support, choose Help, I can’t sign in, and select the closest issue.
Include the exact error text, when it began, which of the browser, desktop client, and mobile app are affected, what type of connection you used, and whether another network worked. Attach a screenshot if available. Steam’s support flow includes paths for forgotten credentials, stolen accounts, missing codes, and lost authenticators.
