Start by checking which PC version of The Witcher 3 you have and whether your system meets that version’s requirements. Then troubleshoot crashes in the developer’s recommended order; for stuttering or low FPS, check for the latest patch and test graphics settings—especially HairWorks—one change at a time.
First, identify your game version and graphics target
CD PROJEKT RED released The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered on September 29, 2026, as a free upgrade for owners on specified platforms. Its technical changes include Path Tracing on PC, so requirements and performance advice for the older 4.04 build may not describe Remastered. Check the installed version and compare your PC with the requirements for that version and the graphics tier you want: official PC system requirements.
The Remastered requirements distinguish Recommended, Ultra, RT Minimum, RT Recommended, and Path Tracing configurations. CD PROJEKT RED’s expected performance figures come from its QA testing and can vary by scene, gameplay, system configuration, and settings. RT and Path Tracing targets use automatic upscaling; Path Tracing also uses Frame Generation, while the other configurations are at native resolution. Treat a target as specific to its listed configuration, not as a promise for every PC.
Check storage and operating system support
The updated requirements say an SSD is required for Remastered’s latest technical enhancements, supporting faster loading and smoother asset streaming. An SSD can help with those tasks, but it is not a universal fix for crashes or every cause of stutter.

Windows 10 may still run the game, but CD PROJEKT RED says it no longer officially supports or tests that operating system for continued development and cannot guarantee compatibility or performance on it going forward.
Fix crashes in the developer’s recommended order
CD PROJEKT RED’s crash guidance starts with system requirements and proceeds through software conflicts, installation checks, and graphics drivers. Work through these steps in order so you can tell whether a change helped.

- Check the requirements. Compare your PC with the requirements for your installed version and intended graphics tier. A system that meets one tier may not meet a more demanding RT or Path Tracing tier.
- Close nonessential programs. Temporarily close background apps and, for diagnosis, temporarily disable antivirus or antimalware software. Check that the PC is free of malware. Re-enable security protection after the test.
- Verify the game files. Use the file-check or repair function in the store or launcher where you installed the game. The exact label varies by storefront.
- Investigate the graphics driver. If crashes continue, CD PROJEKT RED suggests a clean driver reinstall: download the driver you intend to install, use Display Driver Uninstaller to remove previous driver versions, then install the downloaded driver cleanly. The newest driver is not always the answer; the developer notes that installing an older driver can sometimes help.
If a crash happens while loading a save with HairWorks
Keep the game build and graphics API in mind. A June 6, 2024 PC hotfix fixed a specific DirectX 11 crash involving HairWorks after loading a save. That historical fix is distinct from the more recent Remastered HairWorks performance issue; check the update notes for the version you are running.
Reduce stuttering or low FPS in Remastered
Install the applicable update before tuning settings
Check the game’s current version and applicable patch notes before changing a long list of settings. On October 1, 2026, CD PROJEKT RED published Hotfix 5.00c, which reverted a change that caused significant performance and visual issues with HairWorks enabled for some users. Symptoms and fixes can therefore depend on the installed build.

Test HairWorks as a diagnostic toggle
CD PROJEKT RED’s support notice warns that NVIDIA HairWorks may significantly affect performance and recommends disabling it until the issue is addressed in a future patch. The 5.00c hotfix subsequently reverted a HairWorks-related change for some users, so disabling HairWorks is a useful test—not a guaranteed fix for every updated installation.
- Choose a repeatable location or scene where you notice the problem.
- Change only HairWorks, turning it off for the test.
- Replay the same scene with the same resolution and other settings, then compare frame rate and stutter.
- If there is no improvement, restore the setting if you prefer and test another graphics option separately.

Match resolution and settings to your hardware
Resolution has a significant effect on FPS, and expected performance also changes with the scene, gameplay, system, and graphics settings. Compare your system with the official requirements for the tier you have selected rather than treating the Recommended, Ultra, RT, and Path Tracing tiers as interchangeable. If performance is poor, lower the output resolution or demanding graphics settings and compare in the same scene; the available evidence does not establish a reliable best-settings matrix for individual graphics cards.

- Record the installed game version, graphics API if relevant, operating system, graphics settings, and when the issue occurs. Those details help distinguish a version-specific problem from a system-wide one.
- For a crash, continue from file verification to a clean driver reinstall, then consider testing a different driver version if the issue persists.
- For poor performance, confirm the patch, compare with the requirements for your chosen tier, and change one setting at a time. Avoid assuming an SSD, driver update, or single graphics toggle will resolve every cause.

Save compatibility and reverting versions
CD PROJEKT RED’s Remastered FAQ says existing Witcher 3 saves remain compatible, though skills reset because the skill system changed. The FAQ also says whether you can revert to an earlier version depends on the platform. Check the official Remastered FAQ for platform-specific details before changing versions.
