This error means your Epic Games account is already associated with a different Rockstar Games (formerly Social Club) account. It is usually an account-linking conflict, not a GTA V installation problem. First, sign in to the Rockstar account that was originally linked. If you cannot identify or access it, use Rockstar Support; Epic says it cannot unlink a Rockstar account from an Epic Games account.
Do not create another Rockstar account or request an unlink until you check which account contains your progress.
What the error means
Epic Games owns the store purchase and starts the PC game, while Rockstar Games authenticates the title and manages the Rockstar account connected to it. One Epic account can therefore be associated with a Rockstar account, and the message appears when the Epic account is being presented alongside a different Rockstar login.

The exact cause cannot be determined from the message alone, so identify the linked accounts before changing anything.
Before changing the link
- Sign in to Epic Games and open Profile → Account. Record your Epic display name and Epic Games account ID.
- Sign in to each likely Rockstar account through the Rockstar Games website or launcher. Check the email address, connected accounts, and any visible GTA Online identity or other game information.
- Search every email inbox, including spam and deleted folders, for Rockstar confirmation emails, password resets, security alerts, and receipts.
- If the launcher shows a partially masked email, compare it with old addresses instead of guessing.
Do not post account IDs, receipts, email addresses, passwords, recovery codes, or authentication codes publicly. Use only official Epic and Rockstar domains.
Fix 1: Sign in to the original Rockstar account
This is the safest solution because it leaves the existing association unchanged.
- Close GTA V, Red Dead Redemption 2, or the affected Rockstar game.
- Exit both the Epic Games Launcher and Rockstar Games Launcher completely.
- Reopen Rockstar Games Launcher.
- Sign out of the Rockstar account currently displayed.
- Sign in with the Rockstar account originally linked to your Epic account.
- Launch the game from the Epic Games Launcher and approve any authorization prompt.
- Before starting, confirm that the expected Rockstar account is shown.
If the original account is used, the game should authenticate through the existing association. If the same message returns, stop repeatedly reinstalling launchers and move to account recovery or support.
Fix 2: Recover an unfamiliar or compromised account
If the linked email is unfamiliar, or you find security-change messages you did not initiate, treat this as an account-recovery issue rather than a routine unlink.

- Secure the email account first: change its password and enable available security protections.
- Save screenshots of the error and the unfamiliar masked email.
- Gather your Epic account ID and display name, Epic purchase or transaction details, Rockstar receipts or email history, approximate dates and titles played, and relevant launcher screenshots.
- Contact Rockstar Support through the Linking/Unlinking Accounts form.
Do not unlink blindly if the unfamiliar account may contain your GTA Online identity. Rockstar may require ownership information, and support cannot guarantee recovery or a particular response time.
Fix 3: Request an Epic–Rockstar unlink
Use this route only when you own the accounts and genuinely need to change the association. Epic states that Epic Support cannot unlink the Rockstar account; the request must go to Rockstar.
Important: Rockstar requires an acknowledgment that unlinking can result in loss of progress in online Rockstar titles. Progress may remain attached to the original Rockstar account and may not transfer to a different one. A new account can appear to start from zero. Do not treat unlinking as a harmless account switch.
- Sign in to the Rockstar account linked, or believed to be linked, to Epic.
- Open the official Rockstar Linking/Unlinking Accounts request form.
- Explain that you receive:
This Epic Games account is already linked to a different Social Club account. Please log in with that Social Club account instead.
- State which Rockstar account should be associated with Epic.
- Confirm in writing that you understand the possible online-progress loss.
- Enter your Epic Games account ID and attach a screenshot showing your Epic display name, the Account Information section, and the ID.
- Submit the request and wait for Rockstar’s decision.

Rockstar’s PC account-unlinking policy, updated February 4, 2026, says:
- Epic, Steam, and Xbox app for PC link changes are handled through Rockstar Support.
- Eligibility depends on the Rockstar account’s status.
- A link change triggers a cooldown, and Support agents cannot bypass it. Rockstar does not publish a fixed cooldown duration on that policy page.
- An active suspension or ban can make an account ineligible for unlinking while the security action remains active.
- A one-time, case-by-case exception may be possible when the wrong PC platform account was initially linked and there is no Rockstar gameplay time or progress on that account.
Approval is not guaranteed. If you are suspended or banned, resolve or appeal that security action through the appropriate Rockstar process rather than expecting an unlink.

Should you reinstall the game?
Usually not as a first step. Reinstalling GTA V does not change a server-side account association. Reinstalling Rockstar Games Launcher or clearing local credentials may refresh a stuck sign-in session, but it cannot authorize a different linked account. Community reports about reinstalls are inconsistent, so try a complete sign-out and restart once, then move on if the message remains.

What not to do
- Do not create multiple replacement Rockstar accounts.
- Do not delete the old Rockstar account.
- Do not buy the game again before resolving the association; a second purchase may not fix a conflict involving the same Epic account.
- Do not assume matching email addresses prove that the correct Rockstar account is open.
- Do not apply Epic’s separate console-account 365-day unlink guidance to this Epic–Rockstar PC problem.
- Do not use account sellers, unofficial unlinking tools, or paid “recovery agents.”
- Do not send passwords, full payment-card details, recovery codes, or authentication codes to anyone.
Final checklist
- Correct Epic account confirmed.
- Epic display name and account ID recorded.
- Original Rockstar account identified, or recovery evidence gathered.
- Both launchers signed out and restarted.
- No account deleted and no replacement account created.
- Progress-loss warning understood before requesting an unlink.
- Official Rockstar request submitted with the requested ID and screenshot, if needed.
