If Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 is lagging on PS5, first work out whether you are seeing network delay or frame-rate stutter. For rubber-banding, delayed actions, or disconnects, check service status, update the game and console, restart your network equipment, test Ethernet, and check NAT Type. If combat merely looks choppy—especially during large encounters—try Performance mode instead. None of these local steps can permanently fix an outage or a game-side problem.
Identify what kind of lag you have
“Lag” can mean either delayed communication with other players or uneven rendering on your PS5. The distinction matters: faster internet will not fix frame-rate drops, and a graphics setting will not repair a poor network route.

Operations is three-player co-op, while Eternal War is six-versus-six PvP, according to the U.S. PlayStation Store listing. Focus says Eternal War separates console and PC player pools for cross-play balancing in its August community update. Compare symptoms within the mode you play; an issue confined to one session does not by itself identify the cause.
Check whether the problem is local or widespread
Check PlayStation Network status and the game’s official announcements or support channels for a current service incident. The symptoms below are clues, not proof of a specific cause.

Past updates show that connectivity problems have sometimes required game-side work: Focus listed general connectivity improvements in Patch 5.0 and said Patch 7.2 fixed multiple network issues. Those historical notes do not establish that a current problem has the same cause. If an official incident or broad session-wide symptoms point to a service problem, wait for the provider or developer to address it; repeated local changes will not fix the service itself.
Do the low-risk restart and update checks
- Close Space Marine 2 completely, then restart the PS5.
- Restart the modem and router using their normal power procedure. Wait for them to reconnect before launching the game.
- On the PS5 Home screen, highlight the game, press the Options button, and choose the update-check option if available. Install any update offered.
- Check for PS5 system software updates in Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings. Menu labels can vary with system software revisions.
- Join the same mode again and compare the symptoms, ideally with the same party and host.
Focus’s PS5 troubleshooting guidance recommends keeping system software current. A restart can clear a temporary local problem, but it does not show that a remote service is healthy.
Test the PS5 on Ethernet
If practical, connect the PS5 directly to the router with Ethernet and repeat the same multiplayer activity. A wired test is useful for diagnosis, not a requirement for everyone. If it helps, investigate Wi-Fi distance, interference, congestion, or mesh/extender roaming. If it does not, Wi-Fi becomes a less likely explanation, but the test cannot rule out ISP routing, a service outage, or an overloaded connection.

Download speed alone is not a reliable measure of real-time multiplayer quality. Stability, packet loss, jitter, and routing can matter even when a speed test looks fast. A damaged cable or a problematic powerline adapter can also perform worse than good Wi-Fi.

Check the PS5 NAT Type
On PS5, open Settings > Network > Connection Status > View Connection Status and check the NAT Type shown. Focus’s network troubleshooting guidance says NAT Type 3 may cause online problems and describes it as potentially occurring when the console is behind multiple routers. NAT Type 3 is a possible obstacle, not proof that it is causing every lag complaint.
For most home setups, NAT Type 2 behind a router is a practical target; NAT Type 1 is not necessary for most households. If the PS5 is connected through an ISP gateway and a separate router, ask the ISP or consult both device manuals about bridge or modem mode to avoid nested routing. UPnP or port forwarding can change router exposure and behavior, so do not enable them casually or rely on old game-specific port lists. Use current PlayStation and router instructions if you need advanced configuration; do not put the console in a DMZ as a routine fix.

Reduce competing network traffic
For a test, pause large downloads and cloud backups and limit 4K streaming, uploads, torrents, livestreams, and other active gaming devices. If the lag improves, household congestion or queueing may be contributing. Router QoS can prioritize a device, but it cannot create bandwidth your connection lacks, and some implementations may reduce throughput.
- On PS5, open Settings > Network > View Connection Status and note the console’s LAN or Wi-Fi MAC address.
- Sign in to the router’s administration page and look for QoS, typically in advanced or wireless settings.
- If the router supports it, enable QoS, add the PS5 using its MAC address, and assign it high priority.
- Save the configuration and restart the router if the interface requests it.
Router menus and QoS features differ by manufacturer. Follow the router’s own instructions, and check that you selected the PS5’s current connection address rather than a different device.
Try Performance mode for combat stutter
If the picture—not player positions or action timing—is what feels uneven, compare the game’s current Performance and Quality graphics options in the same mission or match. Focus’s Patch 5.0 notes list Performance mode on the standard PS5 with a 60 FPS target and Quality mode at 30 FPS; a target is not a guarantee that frame rate never drops. The game is also listed as PS5 Pro Enhanced, but a PS5 Pro cannot repair packet loss, NAT restrictions, or a service-side issue.

If Performance mode makes the image smoother while rubber-banding remains, you may be dealing with two separate problems. If only heavy combat causes choppiness and other players do not see lag, treat frame-rate performance as the more likely issue.

Use cross-play and host changes as controlled tests, not promised fixes. If the current game build provides a cross-play setting, temporarily disable it or test with console players only, then compare a session with the same host. You can also compare public matchmaking with a private party and ask another player to host.
- If only one host produces trouble, that player’s connection, NAT, router, or ISP route may be relevant.
- If mixed-platform sessions differ from console-only sessions, cross-play or the route/session selected may be involved, but the comparison does not prove cross-play caused the issue.
- Turning cross-play off can reduce the matchmaking pool and may lengthen queues; it may also leave the route unchanged.
Focus describes support across Steam, Epic Games Store, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S in its community update. The available official information does not establish cross-play as a universal PS5 lag fix or confirm the game’s underlying hosting architecture.

Reinstall or use advanced PS5 troubleshooting only later
Reinstalling takes time and requires downloading the game again. Focus documents it for launch problems, not as a guaranteed multiplayer-lag remedy, so try service checks and network tests first. If you have reason to suspect incomplete or corrupted local game data, its PS5 instructions are:
- From the PS5 Home screen, highlight Space Marine 2 and press Options.
- Select Delete. If the game is not on the Home screen, open Game Library > Installed, highlight it, press Options, and select Delete.
- Reinstall the game, then retest before changing additional settings.
Focus also documents a longer power cycle for clearing cached console state: turn off the PS5 completely, wait until its power light stops flashing, disconnect the power cable for 20 minutes, reconnect it, and turn the console on. This is not a remedy for a game-service outage.
Rebuilding the database is a more advanced system-storage troubleshooting option, not an internet-latency repair. If you try it, follow Sony’s current Safe Mode instructions and select the database rebuild option only after simpler steps fail.
Contact support with useful evidence
If the issue persists across Ethernet and more than one host, report it to Focus support. Include details that help distinguish a local connection from a mode, build, or service problem:

- Test Ethernet and pause competing downloads, streaming, and uploads.
- Check NAT Type and investigate a multi-router setup if it is Type 3.
- Compare Performance mode for visual stutter; test another host or cross-play setting only as diagnostics.
- Reserve reinstalling, power-cycling, or database rebuilding for later, and contact support with the test results if the problem continues.
