Hold Fn, press W once, then test the keys. On many gaming keyboards, Fn + W toggles WASD/arrow-key swap mode. It is a keyboard-specific shortcut, not a universal Windows 11 command; if it does nothing, check the keyboard’s model and mode before changing Windows settings or drivers.
Try Fn + W, then test the keys
- Hold Fn and press W once. Release both keys.
- Open Notepad or a browser address bar. Press W, A, S, D and confirm they enter those letters. Press each arrow key and confirm it moves the cursor rather than typing a letter.
- Try the affected game again. If the keys work normally in Windows but not in the game, go to that game’s controls or profile settings instead of changing the keyboard globally.
Some gaming keyboards let users exchange WASD and arrow-key functions through a hardware or firmware mode. Microsoft-hosted support discussions commonly point to Fn + W, but they are user reports, not a specification that applies to every keyboard. Microsoft Q&A: WASD and arrow keys swapped.
If Fn + W does nothing
The shortcut depends on the keyboard. Before trying combinations at random, identify the keyboard’s exact model and check its manual, markings, or official configuration utility. Fn + W may control something else—or may not exist—on your device.
- Check the manual for alternate shortcuts. Fn + Up Arrow and Fn + Windows have been reported for some keyboards; they are model-dependent, not Windows shortcuts. Microsoft Q&A: Fn + W and alternate keyboard behavior and Microsoft Q&A: reported alternate toggles.
- Look for a labeled mode or lock key. Check for Game Mode, a WASD marking, a Windows-key lock, or a programmable/Fn layer. A mode may remain active after a game closes or Windows restarts.
- Check Windows/Mac mode. If the keyboard has a physical or software mode switch, set it to Windows. Mac mode can change more than the WASD and arrow keys.
- Check Fn Lock on a laptop. Some laptops let you lock or configure Fn behavior through firmware or an OEM utility. The setting and shortcut vary by model.
- Test each keyboard separately. If a laptop and an external keyboard are connected, disconnect one while testing the other. The swap may be limited to one device or its onboard profile.

Tell a Windows-wide swap from a game binding
A true swap usually affects input beyond one game: WASD and the arrows exchange behavior in a basic text field or other applications. A game can produce a similar symptom through custom controls, a saved profile, or a launcher’s per-game mapping.
- Wrong in Notepad and across apps: check the keyboard’s hardware mode and software remappers.
- Normal in Windows, wrong in one game: inspect that game’s key bindings and control profile. Reset or correct the in-game bindings rather than adding a system-wide remap.
- Letters are wrong, but arrows behave normally: check the active keyboard language/layout. A layout change can affect character interpretation, but it is not the usual explanation for a direct WASD/arrow exchange.
Remove an existing software remap
If the keys are swapped across applications and a keyboard shortcut does not restore them, check utilities that can intercept input: PowerToys Keyboard Manager, the keyboard maker’s software, macro tools, game-launcher profiles, accessibility remappers, or other key-mapping apps.

To inspect PowerToys, open PowerToys > Keyboard Manager > Remap a key. Review the mappings for W, A, S, D and the four arrow keys; remove any unintended entries and select OK to apply. Remove the original mapping rather than adding a second mapping on top of it. PowerToys must be running for its mappings to work, and a mapping can be global or targeted to an application. Its editor is redesigned by default for new installations beginning with PowerToys 0.100. See Microsoft’s Keyboard Manager documentation.
Use PowerToys only as a workaround for a persistent swap
If the keyboard keeps sending swapped input and its own mode cannot be restored, reciprocal PowerToys mappings can compensate for it. For example, map W to Up Arrow and Up Arrow to W. To reverse all four pairs, create these eight mappings:

Microsoft’s documentation notes that swapping two keys requires mappings in both directions. This workaround is not the same as restoring the keyboard’s mode: test it carefully, because firmware, applications, and input methods can interact differently.
- Unless you target an application, the remap can affect typing, navigation, and other programs as well as games.
- PowerToys must remain running. If the game runs as administrator, PowerToys may also need administrator permissions; see Microsoft’s administrator-mode guidance.
- Microsoft warns that Keyboard Manager can affect game performance and may not work with every game’s keyboard-input method. The remap may work in Notepad but fail in a game.
Reconnect the keyboard and compare devices
Connection issues are less likely than a mode toggle when the four keys exchange functions cleanly, but they are worth checking if the behavior is intermittent or other keys are affected.

- For a wired keyboard, unplug it, wait briefly, then connect it directly to a different USB port. Bypass a hub while testing.
- For a wireless keyboard, check its power or batteries, reconnect it using the manufacturer’s procedure, and use its documented reset procedure if available.
- Restart Windows and test again in Notepad.
- Try another keyboard on the same PC. If it works normally, focus on the original keyboard’s mode, profile, utility, or hardware. If both keyboards are swapped, focus on Windows remapping software or another system-wide utility.
- If possible, connect the suspect keyboard to another computer. If the swap follows it, the keyboard or its onboard profile is the stronger suspect.
Microsoft’s Windows keyboard and mouse troubleshooting guidance also recommends checking power, cables, ports, hubs, wireless connections, and debris around keys.

- Start Windows 11 in Safe Mode.
- Test WASD and arrow keys in Notepad or another basic input field.
- If they behave normally in Safe Mode, restart normally and temporarily disable recently installed keyboard utilities, macro tools, and startup remappers.
- Re-enable the disabled items one at a time and test until the conflicting utility or profile is identified.
Update software only after checking modes and remaps
For a clean exchange of WASD and arrow functions, reinstalling a generic Windows keyboard driver is not the first-line fix; the available Microsoft troubleshooting guidance emphasizes connections and physical checks rather than identifying driver reinstallation as a remedy for this specific swap. If other device problems persist, install pending Windows updates and check the keyboard maker’s official support page for software or firmware for the exact model. Avoid generic driver-fixer applications.
When to reset, repair, or replace the keyboard
Consider a manufacturer-documented factory reset if the swap follows the keyboard to another PC, the correct mode shortcut does not restore it, or its utility cannot change the profile. A fault becomes more plausible if other keys also behave unexpectedly, the keyboard has liquid or impact damage, connections are intermittent, or the swap continues after remapping software is removed. If the documented reset or official update does not help, contact the manufacturer or consider repair or replacement.
