What Xbox error 0x8007013d tells you—and what it does not
The code is reported during Xbox game installations, downloads, and updates, but Microsoft’s public support material does not establish one definitive cause for it. It should not automatically be treated as proof of a network fault, corrupted cache, or failing drive. Use the pattern of the failure to narrow it down.
- One game only: consider an incomplete local install, a game-specific service or license issue, a damaged disc, or the storage location used for that game.
- Several games: check Xbox service availability, console network and software state, account access, and storage.
- Disc games only: inspect the disc and whether the console can read it.
- Digital games only: focus first on service status, account or Store access, the network, and local installation data.
- Same stopping point each attempt: the partial installation, disc, or storage location deserves attention.
If the code appears in the Xbox app or Microsoft Store on Windows rather than on the console, skip to the Windows steps.
Check Xbox status and identify the scope of the failure
Before changing console settings, check the official Xbox service-status page. Look for incidents affecting account and profile, Store and subscriptions, content downloads or purchases, and gaming or multiplayer. If a relevant service is listed as disrupted, local network changes and resets will not resolve the outage; retry after service is restored. Status can vary by service and region, so a normal page does not rule out every account-specific or local problem.

Note whether the error occurs on a new install or update, whether it affects one title or several, how far the progress gets, and whether the game is on disc, internal storage, or an external drive. Those details make the later tests more useful.
Try the low-risk console fixes first
Cancel the failed queue entry and retry
- Open My games & apps and find the title in the queue or installation list.
- Cancel the failed download or update.
- Restart the Xbox from the Power Center or system menu.
- Try the installation again, closing any running game first.
Canceling may remove the incomplete local installation, so the console may need to download or copy the game again.
Power-cycle the Xbox
- Hold the console’s Xbox power button for about 10 seconds, until it shuts down completely.
- Disconnect the power cable and wait at least 30 seconds.
- Reconnect the cable, turn the console on, and retry the installation.
This is a full shutdown and restart, not a factory reset. It is intended to clear a temporary operating state; it does not guarantee repair of damaged game files. Follow Xbox’s power-cycle guidance if you need the official procedure.

Clear Alternate MAC address
- Open Settings > General > Network settings > Advanced settings.
- Select Alternate MAC address > Clear.
- Let the console restart, reconnect to Wi-Fi if prompted, and retry.
This removes a manually configured alternate network identity and restarts network configuration. It is a possible troubleshooting step repeated in Microsoft Community guidance, not a confirmed fix for error 0x8007013d or a universal cache-clearing operation.
Use network tests to separate Xbox, router, and Wi-Fi issues
Run the Xbox network test
Go to Settings > General > Network settings and run the available network and Xbox network tests. Note the NAT type, packet loss, latency, and whether Xbox services are reachable. Menu wording may differ slightly by Xbox generation or dashboard version; use the closest current equivalent.
Change one connection variable at a time
- Restart the modem and router.
- Move the console nearer to the Wi-Fi access point or temporarily connect with Ethernet.
- If practical, test a phone hotspot, keeping mobile-data limits in mind.
- Pause other large downloads or streaming, then retry the install.

- Ethernet works, Wi-Fi fails: investigate wireless signal, interference, or router configuration.
- A hotspot works, home internet fails: the home router, ISP route, NAT, DNS, or filtering is a stronger lead.
- Every connection fails: return attention to console state, storage, account, game media, or service availability.
Microsoft’s general network troubleshooting guidance also recommends connection diagnostics and trying another connection type. A working internet connection on other devices alone does not rule out Xbox-specific routing, NAT, DNS, or service issues.
Try manual DNS only if network symptoms point that way
If the Xbox connects but appears unable to reliably reach Xbox or Store services, manual DNS can be a diagnostic test. Go to Settings > General > Network settings > Advanced settings > DNS settings, switch from Automatic to Manual, and enter one pair:

- Cloudflare: 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1

Test the connection and retry. Public DNS is not a guaranteed fix: it can help isolate name-resolution or ISP-DNS trouble, but cannot repair a damaged install, storage fault, or service outage. If it makes no difference, restore DNS to Automatic. Community examples include Xbox network troubleshooting and download troubleshooting.

Repair a game-specific installation, disc, or storage problem
Remove only the incomplete game installation
If the problem is limited to one title, cancel its queue entry and remove its incomplete local installation using the queue or storage-management screen. Restart, then begin a fresh install. Avoid launching another game during the initial retry. Do not delete local saved data as an early troubleshooting step; confirm saves have synchronized and that you can access the correct account before considering any save-related action.
For a disc-based game, check the disc path
- Eject the disc and wipe it with a soft, lint-free cloth; check for cracks or visible scratches.
- Confirm the console recognizes the disc. A disc game may still need a substantial online update.
- If other discs install normally but this one repeatedly fails, the disc is a stronger suspect; if multiple discs fail, the optical drive path may be involved.
- If available, use the game’s Store listing to start a digital download while keeping the disc available for ownership verification.
Disc, storage, and reinstall problems are also described in this community troubleshooting example; it does not establish a universal cause for this error.
Check free space and compare internal with external storage
Make sure the destination has enough free space for both the game and its update. If the title is installing to an external USB drive, disconnect it or choose the internal drive for a test installation. If several games on one external drive fail, testing the internal drive helps isolate the location. Repeated failures at varying percentages, especially alongside other storage errors, can raise concern about drive health, but one failed install alone does not prove a drive is defective.

Update the console, then consider a keep-games reset
Install available system updates
Check the console’s system settings for an update. Software updates can affect Store, licensing, networking, and installation behavior. If a normal update cannot complete, note the exact update or startup error, do not repeatedly interrupt it, and follow the Xbox Support startup or update troubleshooting route.
Reset while keeping games and apps only as a later step
- Open Settings > System > Console info > Reset console.
- Choose Reset and keep my games & apps.
- Sign back in and restore preferences if needed, then retry the install.
This refreshes console software while retaining installed games and apps, but may remove accounts, preferences, and local configuration. Make sure you know the Microsoft account email and password first. Do not choose Reset and remove everything unless Xbox Support or a well-supported diagnosis calls for it. This reset option is included in Microsoft Community troubleshooting guidance, not as an official code-specific remedy.
If 0x8007013d appears in the Xbox app on Windows
Use this branch for Windows 10 or 11 when the console itself is not showing the error. Check that the Xbox app and Microsoft Store are signed in to the same Microsoft account with access to the game. Then:
- Install available Windows updates.
- Open Microsoft Store and select Library > Get updates.
- Close and reopen both the Xbox app and Microsoft Store, then restart Windows.
- In Windows app settings, use the affected app’s Repair option first; use Reset if repair does not help.
- If the Store itself is malfunctioning, press Windows key + R, enter
wsreset.exe, and select OK. A blank command window may appear briefly before Microsoft Store opens.
Microsoft documents these general Store app steps, but does not establish that they specifically fix 0x8007013d: see repairing and resetting Store apps and Store installation troubleshooting.

When to stop troubleshooting
Contact Xbox Support if the error persists after the service check, alternate-network test, storage comparison, and appropriate reinstall, or if the console also reports startup, update, or storage errors. Include the exact code, game title, whether it is disc or digital, where it is installed, the point at which it fails, and which networks you tested. Repeated failure across different games and connections makes further diagnosis more useful than repeating DNS changes or deleting unrelated data.
