Error 0x80A40008 usually means the Xbox app could not complete Microsoft-account authentication or reach a required Xbox service. Microsoft does not currently publish a detailed Windows-specific definition for this code; most documented reports concern Xbox-console sign-in. On Windows, use the least destructive checks first: verify Xbox service status, test the account in a browser, update Windows and Microsoft Store, repair the Xbox app, clear the Store cache, and then investigate accounts, network settings and Windows services.
The message commonly appears as “Try again later. There was a problem, and we couldn’t continue. (0x80A40008).” The procedure below is for the Xbox app, Microsoft Store, Game Bar or a Game Pass game on a Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC.
First, identify where the code appears
Check whether the message is shown in the Xbox app for Windows, Microsoft Store, Xbox Game Bar, a Game Pass game, a browser or an Xbox console. Console instructions do not directly repair a Windows app. If the code appears only on a console, use the console-specific guidance from Xbox Support rather than removing profiles or resetting the PC.
Fix 0x80A40008 in the safest order
1. Check Xbox service status
Open Xbox service status before changing anything. Look for an incident affecting account, authentication, gaming or social services. If one is listed, wait for Microsoft to resolve it and retry afterward. Repeatedly resetting apps or removing accounts cannot repair a Microsoft-side outage.

2. Test the Microsoft account outside the Xbox app
- Sign in at account.microsoft.com.
- Sign in at xbox.com with the same address.
- Complete any security challenge or two-factor prompt.
- If sign-in fails, use Microsoft’s account-recovery process, check for a lock or suspension, and finish any requested verification.
A newly created account may also need to complete Xbox-profile or gamertag setup at Xbox.com. That has been reported by users as helpful, but it is not documented by Microsoft as a guaranteed fix. Child and family accounts may require organizer approval.
If browser sign-in fails, concentrate on account recovery. If both sites work, the Windows app, Store licensing, cached credentials or the network is more likely to be responsible.
3. Restart Windows and retry
- Close Xbox, Microsoft Store and the affected game.
- Select Start > Power > Restart.
- Open Microsoft Store first and confirm that it loads.
- Open Xbox and try signing in again.
4. Install Windows, Store and Xbox updates
On Windows 11, go to Start > Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates. On Windows 10, use Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > Check for updates. Install updates and restart when prompted.

Then update Microsoft Store. In Windows 11, open Microsoft Store > Library > Get updates. In Windows 10, open Microsoft Store > See more (…) > Downloads and updates > Get updates. Update Xbox if it appears in the list. These paths follow Microsoft’s current Store-app guidance at Fix problems with apps from Microsoft Store.
5. Repair, then reset, the Xbox app
Repair is the supported first attempt because it normally preserves the app’s broader state. Reset is more disruptive: it can remove cached credentials and local settings, so expect to sign in again. It does not normally remove installed games.
- Windows 11: open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps. Windows 10: open Start > Settings > Apps > Apps & features.
- Find Xbox, open its … menu (or select it), then choose Advanced options.
- Select Terminate if available, then Repair.
- Retry Xbox sign-in. If it still fails, return to the same screen and select Reset.
Microsoft describes repair and reset, followed by reinstalling when necessary, in its Store-app instructions: support.microsoft.com.

6. Clear the Microsoft Store cache
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter
wsreset.exeand select OK. - Wait while the blank Command Prompt window closes. The Store normally opens automatically after roughly 10 seconds.
- Restart Windows and retry Xbox.
This is Microsoft’s documented Store-cache procedure; see I can’t find or install an app from Microsoft Store.

7. Align Store and Xbox accounts
- Sign out of the Xbox app.
- Open Microsoft Store, select the profile icon and sign out.
- Restart Windows.
- Sign in to Microsoft Store with the account that owns the game or Game Pass subscription.
- Sign in to Xbox with that same account.
Using different accounts can leave licensing and subscription information out of sync. Signing out removes locally cached credentials; it does not delete the Microsoft account, Xbox profile, installed games or cloud saves.
8. Correct time, time zone and region
Open Settings > Time & language > Date & time, enable automatic time and time-zone settings, and select Sync now when offered. Incorrect clocks can invalidate authentication tokens and certificates.

Check Settings > Time & language > Language & region in Windows 11, or Settings > Time & language > Region in Windows 10. Correct the country or region only if it is actually wrong or you have genuinely moved. Microsoft warns that changing it can affect Store content, Game Pass, purchases and account balances; see Change your country or region in Microsoft Store.
9. Test the connection without filters
- Disconnect any VPN.
- Disable a configured proxy temporarily.
- Try a phone hotspot or another network.
- Try Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi if available.
If the hotspot works but home Wi-Fi does not, investigate router filtering, DNS, captive portals, school or workplace restrictions, firewall rules, antivirus web inspection and ISP filtering. Re-enable security protection immediately after a diagnostic test. Do not open Xbox console ports as a default Windows sign-in fix; port forwarding is relevant only to a confirmed router or NAT problem.
10. Check relevant Windows services
This is a diagnostic check, not proof that one named service causes the code. Service names and startup behavior vary by Windows edition and installed components.

- Press Windows key + R, enter
services.mscand select OK. - Confirm that these services are not disabled: Gaming Services, Xbox Accessory Management Service, Xbox Live Auth Manager, Xbox Live Networking Service, Xbox Live Game Save, Microsoft Store Install Service, Background Intelligent Transfer Service, Windows Update and IP Helper.
- Restart a relevant service that is stopped, using its existing Manual or Automatic setting where Windows permits it.
- Restart Windows and test again.
Microsoft explains the role of authentication, licensing, networking, update and configuration components in Essential services and connected experiences for Windows. Do not set every service to Automatic or disable security services.
11. Reinstall Xbox only after repair and reset
- Uninstall Xbox from Settings > Apps > Installed apps (Windows 11) or Apps & features (Windows 10), or use the Store interface when offered.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Microsoft Store, select Library, reinstall Xbox and sign in.
Reinstalling is appropriate when supported repair, reset, updates and wsreset.exe have failed. Avoid unofficial registry edits or PowerShell removal scripts as a first-line fix because they can remove dependencies and make Gaming Services harder to repair.
12. Treat Gaming Services according to the symptom
If sign-in alone fails, focus on account, service status, Store cache, app state, time and network checks. If games will not install, look at Store and Gaming Services. If a game launches but licensing fails, verify Store/Xbox account alignment, ownership and subscription status. Reinstalling Gaming Services should not be the default response to a sign-in-only error.
13. Use a clean boot to find third-party interference
A VPN, antivirus web shield, firewall, overlay or system optimizer can block authentication. Microsoft’s clean-boot method is described at How to perform a clean boot in Windows.
- Press the Windows key, type
msconfigand open System Configuration. - On Services, select Hide all Microsoft services, then Disable all.
- Open the Startup tab and launch Task Manager.
- Disable enabled third-party startup items and restart.
- Test Xbox. Restore Normal startup and re-enable items after testing.
A clean boot temporarily reduces functionality; it is a diagnostic state, not a permanent configuration.

What not to do
- Do not assume the code always means a wrong password.
- Do not factory-reset Windows for a Windows Xbox-app sign-in error.
- Do not factory-reset an Xbox console unless the error is actually on that console and supported recovery has failed. A full reset can remove accounts, settings and local data; even “reset and keep my games & apps” is a console-only last resort.
- Do not change your Microsoft Store region as an experiment.
- Do not permanently disable antivirus or firewall protection.
- Do not remove an Xbox-console profile to repair a PC-only error.
When to contact Microsoft or Xbox Support
Escalate through Xbox Support or Microsoft Support when the account fails in browsers, appears suspended or security-locked, the error persists across multiple networks, several Windows accounts fail, the status page shows no outage, or Xbox and Store repair/reinstallation have not helped. Include the exact message, where it appears, when it began, whether browser sign-in works and which network tests you performed.
