Xbox error 0x82D40003 means the console cannot verify the license or entitlement needed to start a game. First, connect the Xbox to the internet and sign in with the account that bought the game or provides its Game Pass access. If someone else owns it, check that this console is set as that owner account’s Home Xbox. The error does not by itself mean the game files are damaged.
What Xbox error 0x82D40003 means
The game may be installed, but installation and permission to play are separate: Xbox still needs to confirm a valid license. That permission may come from a digital purchase, an eligible subscription, or another account’s Home Xbox setup. A sign-in, network, service, or license-sync problem can also prevent verification even when you own the game. Xbox’s error-code help page covers this specific code.
Work through the checks below before deleting or reinstalling a large game. Menu wording may vary slightly by system update or language.

Start with the checks that identify the cause
Check whether one game or several games fail
- One game fails: Check its owner account, edition, purchase or subscription entitlement, and whether it requires an online connection.
- Several unrelated digital games fail: Check Xbox service status, network access, the signed-in account, and Home Xbox settings before treating each game as a separate installation problem.
- Only offline play fails: Check whether the console is the owner account’s Home Xbox. Some games also require online access regardless of the license arrangement.
Check whether the game is digital or disc-based
For a digital game, continue with the account and entitlement checks below. If you are using a physical disc, insert the original compatible disc and check for read or damage issues. Disc-license problems commonly show a different message or code, including 0x82D40004; see this Microsoft Community discussion of disc-license errors. A disc-free Xbox Series S cannot use a disc as a license.

Fix the account or entitlement mismatch
Sign in with the account that has access
- Press the Xbox button.
- Open Profile & system and check which profile is active.
- Sign out if needed, then sign in with the Microsoft account that purchased the game or owns the subscription that provides access.
- With that account signed in and the console online, try launching the game again.
If the game belongs to someone else, identify the actual purchasing account rather than assuming the currently signed-in profile has the license. A tile remaining in your library only shows that game files are present; it does not prove that the account or console still has an entitlement.
Verify the purchase, subscription, and edition
For a digital purchase, check the purchasing account’s order history or library. Make sure you are trying to start the same product or edition that was acquired: a trial, demo, beta, Deluxe edition, or cross-generation edition may be listed separately. If access comes from Game Pass, confirm the subscription is active and the specific title is still included in the relevant catalog. A Game Pass entitlement is subscription access, not permanent ownership; an expired subscription or a title leaving the catalog can make an installed game unavailable. Catalog inclusion and plan eligibility can change. See Xbox subscription management.
The Store’s button text can help as a quick clue: if it says Buy instead of Install or Play while you are signed into the suspected owner account, access may be missing. But labels vary by game, edition, subscription, and console generation, so order history is stronger evidence.

Check the owner account’s Home Xbox setting for shared games
If another account owns the game, that account—not the person trying to play—must establish the console’s Home Xbox license. On the owner’s Home Xbox, other profiles can generally use eligible digital games and subscriptions, including when the owner is not signed in. On a console that is not the owner’s Home Xbox, the owner generally needs to be signed in and connected to Xbox services. Eligibility and behavior can vary by content, subscription, account restrictions, and the game’s online requirements. - Sign in on the console with the account that owns the game.
- Press the Xbox button and select Profile & system > Settings.
- Go to General > Personalization > My home Xbox.
- If appropriate, choose Make this my home Xbox.
A Microsoft account can have only one Home Xbox at a time, and Microsoft limits how often it can be changed. Confirm the owner account and the console before changing the setting; do not switch it repeatedly as a routine fix. If the owner has designated another console as Home Xbox, that change can affect access there.

Check the network and Xbox services
Connect the console to the internet and check the official Xbox status page before doing more disruptive troubleshooting. If multiple digital games stopped working together, an account or licensing-service outage may be the cause. A non-Home console generally needs the owner signed in and online to validate digital access. Home Xbox helps with offline access for eligible games, but it does not make every game playable offline: some titles require online connectivity, and subscription entitlements may need periodic online checks. Restart or power-cycle
- Press and hold the Xbox button on the controller, then select Restart console.
- If the error remains, turn off the Xbox. Hold the console’s power button for about 10 seconds until it shuts down.
- Unplug the power cable briefly, reconnect it, and start the console.
- Sign in and retry the game while online.
A power cycle is a low-risk way to refresh the console’s state; it cannot restore a missing purchase or subscription entitlement.

Remove and re-add the local profile only if needed
If the account appears to be stuck or its local profile may be damaged, remove only the affected profile, then add it again. Removing an account from the console does not delete the Microsoft account and normally does not uninstall games, but it does remove the local profile. Make sure you know the account email address and password before continuing.
- Open Settings > Account > Remove accounts and remove the affected account.
- Restart the Xbox.
- Add the account again and sign in.
- If access relies on game sharing, recheck My home Xbox under the game-owner account.
Reinstall only when the license checks out
Reinstalling does not repair a missing or unrecognized license. First confirm the correct account, game edition, purchase or active subscription, and Home Xbox arrangement. If the entitlement is valid and only one game still fails, reinstall it from My games & apps > Full library so you are installing the product associated with that account. Move or reinstall a game on the internal drive only if you have reason to suspect an external drive or storage-detection problem; the error points first to entitlement verification, not drive location.
Use a console reset only as a last software step
If service status, connectivity, account access, and Home Xbox settings are all correct but the problem persists, try the reset option that keeps installed content. It is not a guaranteed license fix, but Microsoft Community troubleshooting guidance has recommended it for persistent account or license problems.
- Press the Xbox button and select Profile & system > Settings.
- Go to System > Console info > Reset console.
- Choose Reset and keep my games & apps.
This removes local accounts and settings while retaining installed games and apps, so you will need to sign in again. Do not choose Reset and remove everything unless you intend to erase the console or have been advised to do so by support. When to contact Xbox Support
Contact Xbox Support if the purchase appears in the owner account’s order history but the game remains inaccessible after the account and console checks, if several consoles show the same entitlement problem, or if billing, refunds, enforcement, subscription status, or account authentication is involved. Have the account that owns the game, the title and edition, the error code, and relevant order or subscription details available.
