Xbox error 0x82D40007 means the console cannot currently verify your right to use a game or app. Xbox’s official error guidance points first to the account that purchased it, an expired trial, or access through a subscription or Home Xbox sharing arrangement. It usually calls for an entitlement check—not a console reset.
Start with the kind of access you have
Before changing settings, work out how this particular game is licensed. A game being installed on the console does not prove that the profile launching it has a valid license.
- Digital purchase: The Microsoft account that bought the game should have it in its library or order history.
- Game Pass or another subscription: The subscription must be active, cover the account being used, and still include the game in the applicable catalog.
- Shared game: The owner’s account must have the intended console set as its Home Xbox, or the owner generally needs to be signed in and online on a different console.
- Trial: If the trial has expired, reinstalling or restarting will not extend it. Xbox says the game must be purchased to continue playing.
- Disc copy: The original disc generally needs to be inserted and readable when you launch the game.
Sign in with the account that owns the game
This is the best first check for a digital game. A profile that downloaded, installed, or previously played a title may not be the account that owns its license.

- Open Profile & system, then select Add or switch.
- Choose the Microsoft account that purchased the game or owns the subscription that provides access.
- Try launching the game again.
If that account is already signed in, sign out, restart the console, sign back in, and retry. If several people in the household have Xbox accounts, check each one rather than relying on the profile name or who usually plays.

Verify the purchase, subscription, or trial
For a digital purchase or redeemed code
Check the library or order history for the Microsoft account used at checkout. If you redeemed a retailer code, confirm it was redeemed to that same account: Microsoft says redeemed codes and digital products attach to the account used for redemption (Microsoft account code guidance). Do not buy the game again until you have checked the other accounts that may have been used.
For Game Pass or another subscription
- Sign in to the account that pays for or owns the subscription and check that it is active, including that it is not past due.
- Confirm that the specific game is still included in the catalog and eligible under that account’s plan and region.
- If another account provides the subscription, test the game while signed in as that account before troubleshooting the secondary profile’s access.
A subscription grants access under its terms; it is not the same as owning a permanent digital copy. A subscription can be active while a particular game is unavailable because of catalog, plan, regional, or sharing changes.
For an expired trial
Xbox’s error page identifies an expired trial as a case where you need to purchase the title to keep playing. Account removal, Home Xbox changes, and reinstalling cannot restore an expired trial entitlement.

Check the owner’s Home Xbox if access is shared
The account that owns the digital game or subscription needs to designate the console where other profiles are meant to play as its Home Xbox. On that designated console, other profiles can generally use eligible shared digital games and benefits. On a different console, the owner generally needs to remain signed in and connected to Xbox services for access to be verified.
- Sign in with the account that owns the game or subscription.
- Open Settings → General → Personalization → My home Xbox. Menu labels may vary slightly by console software version.
- Check whether this is the console intended for sharing. If it is, select Make this my home Xbox if that option is available.
Do not change the setting on every console as a trial-and-error fix. First confirm that you are using the owner’s account and the intended shared console. Changing Home Xbox can alter which console has shared and offline access, and the account may be near its allowed change limit; Microsoft’s error guidance does not establish a current numerical limit here.
If you are offline, the Home Xbox setup matters: a non-Home console may be unable to verify shared digital access without the owner signed in and online. Being connected to the internet will not, by itself, grant a license to an account that does not own or share the game.

Check Xbox services, network, and system updates
Use these checks if the account and entitlement appear correct, or if multiple digital titles are failing.

NAT type and multiplayer tests are secondary checks; the first priority is whether the console can reach Xbox services.
- Check the Xbox service status. If a relevant service is down, wait for it to recover before changing sharing settings or buying anything.
- Open Settings → System → Updates and install any available console update. Menu wording may vary slightly by software version. Microsoft provides this update path in its Xbox troubleshooting guidance.
A service interruption can prevent a license check from completing even when the purchase is valid. For offline play of eligible shared digital content, the owner’s Home Xbox designation is the relevant setup; a secondary console may need the owner online.
Restart or power-cycle the console
After checking the account, use a power cycle to clear a possibly stale sign-in or license state. It will not fix an expired trial, inactive subscription, missing purchase, or absent disc.

- Hold the Xbox button on the console for about 10 seconds, until the console shuts down.
- Disconnect the power briefly, then reconnect it and start the console.
- Sign in with the purchasing or subscribing account first, then try the game.
For a disc-based game, check the disc and drive
- Insert the original disc and leave it in the drive while launching the installed game.
- Confirm the console has a disc drive; Xbox Series S models do not accept physical discs.
- Check that you have the correct game and edition, and inspect the disc for dirt or damage. Clean it carefully if needed.
- Test another disc. If other discs work but this one does not, the game disc is a stronger suspect; if none are recognized, the drive may need attention.
Installing a game from a disc does not normally replace the disc’s role as the license for a physical copy. Disc behavior can vary by title, edition, and console model.
Re-add the account or reinstall only if simpler checks fail
Remove and re-add the account
Try this only if you can sign back in and know the account credentials. Wait for saves to synchronize with Xbox network storage before changing account or console settings.
- Open Settings → Account → Remove accounts and remove the affected profile.
- Restart the console, then add the profile again and sign in with the account that owns the game or subscription.
- Test the title. You may need to re-enter credentials and restore console preferences.
Removing a profile does not transfer ownership or change which account holds a purchase.

Reinstall the game
Reinstall only after confirming the game is still owned or available through the applicable subscription. It may help if the local installation is damaged, but it cannot supply a missing purchase, restore an expired trial or inactive subscription, resolve a service outage, or replace a required disc.
Reserve a console reset for last
If the purchase or subscription is valid, Home Xbox and network settings are correct, and the error persists, contact Xbox Support before resetting. If support recommends a reset, synchronize saves and make sure you can sign in to every relevant account first. Choose Reset and keep my games & apps if offered; even that option can remove profiles, settings, and local account data. Avoid a full factory wipe for one license error unless Xbox Support directs you to do it.
When to contact Xbox Support
Use the Xbox contact and support flow if the purchase appears under the correct account but is still rejected, the active subscription includes the title, the intended Home Xbox is correctly configured, or the error continues after an outage has ended. Contact support as well if you cannot access the purchasing account or its order history; avoid repeatedly changing Home Xbox or resetting the console while ownership is unresolved.
