If OBS shows “Encoding overloaded!” while you stream to YouTube Live, first lower the work OBS must do: test 720p at 30 fps, simplify your scene, and free CPU or GPU capacity. An encoder overload is a local processing problem—not, by itself, a sign of slow internet. If OBS’s output looks healthy but YouTube reports interruptions, investigate upload capacity separately.
First identify what is falling behind
Open OBS’s View → Stats dock and watch it during the scene that causes trouble. “Encoding overloaded!” or rising encoding lag/skipped frames means the encoder is not keeping pace with the requested output. Rendering lag points to OBS or the GPU struggling to draw the scene. Network dropped frames point toward the connection carrying the stream to YouTube. These problems can overlap, so use the specific counters rather than treating every kind of lag as an internet issue. OBS Project’s encoding performance guide discusses GPU overload and other system bottlenecks.
On Windows, OBS recommends trying administrator mode as an initial step for GPU-overload symptoms: close OBS, right-click its shortcut, and select Run as administrator. This is a diagnostic fix to test, not a guarantee.
Reduce OBS’s workload in a controlled order
Change one setting at a time, then test the same demanding scene and compare the Stats dock. That makes it easier to tell which change helped. Start with output resolution and frame rate before changing bitrate, because a lower bitrate does not directly make an overloaded encoder process frames faster.

- Lower output resolution. In OBS, open Settings → Video and reduce Output (Scaled) Resolution. If you are streaming at 1080p, try 1280×720. Leave Base (Canvas) Resolution unchanged initially; changing the canvas can complicate source positioning and scene management. If the PC is extremely resource-constrained, reducing the canvas may be worth testing later.
- Reduce frame rate. In the same Video settings, change 60 fps to 30 fps. A useful test target for a low-end PC is 1280×720 at 30 fps, not a guaranteed fit for every machine. Fewer frames mean less real-time work for the PC. If overload remains, test a lower resolution or further simplify the scene.
- Free CPU and GPU capacity. Close unnecessary applications that use significant CPU or GPU resources, including other games, GPU workloads, capture tools, and overlays. If you are streaming gameplay, lower in-game graphics settings or cap the game’s frame rate; an uncapped game can consume GPU capacity OBS needs to render and encode.
- Simplify the active scene. Remove duplicate captures and sources you do not need. Reduce unnecessary filters, animated elements, and browser sources, then test again. OBS scene composition takes GPU work, so simpler scenes can help when rendering is falling behind.
- Reassess the encoder. If OBS is using x264 and CPU saturation is the bottleneck, check the encoder options available on your actual system for a supported NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel hardware encoder. A hardware encoder uses a specialized component and can reduce CPU work. Availability depends on hardware and drivers, and older-generation encoders can have a quality trade-off at the same bitrate. If a hardware encoder is already selected, the GPU may instead be saturated by the game or scene; reduce that workload before considering an upgrade.
OBS’s encoding troubleshooting guidance recommends reducing output resolution and frame rate, simplifying scenes, and checking what else is using the GPU. Its hardware encoding guide explains the CPU-relief trade-off. Neither guide supports a universal hardware recommendation or the idea that every low-end PC needs a new GPU.
Use YouTube-compatible live encoder settings
In OBS’s stream and output settings, use settings compatible with YouTube’s live ingest. YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS delivery and supports H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio is listed for RTMP/RTMPS. YouTube recommends RTMPS for secure delivery. For a constrained PC, H.264 is a practical option to test because YouTube publishes explicit H.264 ingest bitrate recommendations; the available codec and encoder combinations depend on your device.

- Rate control: CBR (constant bitrate).
- Keyframe interval: two seconds recommended; do not exceed four seconds.
- Frame rate: up to 60 fps is supported, but use 30 fps if that is what your PC can sustain.
YouTube’s current live encoder settings list these H.264 ingest bitrate recommendations. They describe YouTube’s stream input, not what a particular PC can encode or a measured upload speed.

For an overloaded encoder, first test resolution, frame rate, encoder choice, and competing CPU/GPU work. Lowering bitrate is more directly relevant when the connection cannot upload reliably; it does not remove the work of rendering and encoding the chosen frames.

Separate encoder trouble from upload trouble
If the OBS preview and local encoder output look healthy but viewers see interruptions or YouTube reports network problems, check outbound upload capacity. Use a measured upload speed, not download speed. YouTube recommends keeping about 20% headroom above the total stream bitrate, as described in its streaming tips. For example, a stream set to 8 Mbps needs more than 8 Mbps of available upload capacity; leave the recommended margin for other traffic and variation.
YouTube’s live streaming troubleshooting advice includes updating encoder software, inspecting the output directly in the encoder, checking CPU load, and testing the outbound connection if the output is healthy. Test with representative movement and audio before going live, then monitor OBS Stats and YouTube stream health. Platform bitrate guidance is global; there is no separate India-specific encoder bitrate in these settings. Your usable upload capacity depends on the connection where you stream.

Copyright and channel-policy checks before going live
Encoder settings cannot make a stream safe to broadcast or eligible for monetization. Use video and audio you have the rights to stream, including music and other material inside a game or recording. Review YouTube’s live-streaming terms and copyright notices for your channel, and check applicable channel policies before using a continuous or prerecorded stream. A technically stable stream can still be interrupted or restricted for rights or policy reasons.
