If the picture is already black locally, troubleshoot the input, capture, filters, stream mapping, or encoder. If FFmpeg’s output is fine but YouTube’s preview is black, check the current ingest URL and stream key, then use YouTube’s health message to identify a format, keyframe, dimension, or connection issue. There is no single FFmpeg command that fixes every black screen because the right settings depend on the input and the reported error.
Find where the video disappears
Separate the path into three checkpoints: the video entering FFmpeg, FFmpeg’s encoded output, and YouTube’s incoming preview. YouTube recommends checking the encoder’s appearance and a local archive; if the encoder output looks correct, its troubleshooting guidance turns attention to the outbound connection. A black frame at an earlier checkpoint points to a different cause than a black YouTube preview.

The table is a diagnostic guide, not proof of a single cause. YouTube recommends checking the stream as it appears in the encoder and looking for issues in a local archive. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance also distinguishes encoder-output problems from a healthy-looking encoder with an outbound connection issue.
Check the FFmpeg input and local output
Confirm FFmpeg is receiving video
Inspect the FFmpeg log and confirm that the chosen input contains a video stream and that frames are advancing. For a file, make sure the intended file is actually supplied as an input. For a camera, desktop capture, or another live feed, confirm the selected device or source is available and permitted to be captured. The precise checks depend on the input type.

Inspect a local recording or output
If you have a local recording, play it and see whether it contains moving video. If not, the problem is upstream of YouTube. Check the input selection, capture permissions or device, upstream feed, filter chain, stream mapping, and encoder output. Change one relevant item at a time so you can tell which observation changes.
Do not assume a particular FFmpeg option is at fault without seeing the input and command. FFmpeg accepts inputs through -i and writes to an output URL or file; its input options and output arrangement depend on the source. For deeper diagnosis, gather the full command and relevant log, but redact the stream key before sharing them.
Verify the YouTube event, ingest URL, and stream key
- Open the intended event in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
- Copy the current stream URL and stream key for that event, then check that FFmpeg’s output destination uses them. Do not reuse a URL or key from a different event without confirming it is the intended destination.
- Start the encoder and wait for the incoming preview in Live Control Room. Compare that preview with the FFmpeg output or local recording.
- Do not click “Go live” until the preview shows the expected picture. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance explains how to copy the event’s URL and key and check the preview before going live: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
A key is a credential: never publish it in a log, screenshot, command example, or support post. FFmpeg’s documentation describes the general RTMP protocol and URL components, but use the current destination supplied by YouTube rather than copying a sample address: FFmpeg Protocols Documentation.

Use the Live Control Room health message to choose a fix
Once the destination is verified, read the health indicator before changing encoding settings. YouTube reports detected ingest problems in Live Control Room. Match the fix to the actual warning instead of changing several settings at once. The currently published recommendations below are from YouTube’s encoder settings guidance; supported formats and recommendations can change, so consult that page for the current values.
Format, protocol, and codec
Check that the protocol and video and audio codecs match YouTube’s current ingest guidance. YouTube’s error reference identifies an incorrect stream format or codec as a possible ingest problem. Do not infer compatibility from a command that works with another server: verify against YouTube’s current settings and the actual health message. See YouTube’s live-stream error messages.
Keyframe interval and GOP
YouTube recommends a keyframe interval of two seconds and says it should not exceed four seconds. The error guidance discusses keyframe frequency, GOP size, and closed GOP behavior. At 30 fps, a two-second interval is 60 frames, as YouTube’s error page specifies. If the health message points to keyframes or GOP, inspect the encoder’s actual output settings rather than assuming the configured value took effect.

Video dimensions and resolution
Check that the encoded width and height match the resolution selected for the YouTube ingest. If the error message flags dimensions, correct the mismatch using the values shown in YouTube’s current settings; do not guess a resolution based only on the source file.
Bitrate and upload capacity
YouTube publishes bitrate recommendations by resolution and codec and advises testing upload speed. Use its current table to choose a bitrate the connection can sustain. Raising bitrate is not a general remedy for a black screen; investigate it when the health message or unstable delivery points that way.

YouTube’s current encoder settings page recommends 128 Kbps stereo audio. Treat that as an audio recommendation, not a fix for missing video; use the health message to diagnose the picture separately.

Test the outbound connection only after checking the picture
If the local or encoder output has video but YouTube’s preview is not healthy, first rule out the wrong event destination and settings errors. If the encoder output looks healthy, YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance says an outbound internet issue may be involved. Test the upload connection and, if it is unstable, work with your internet provider. Use a test with audio and movement similar to the real stream, and monitor the health indicator while it runs.

- Run an unlisted or private test event and start FFmpeg with the intended source.
- Confirm moving video in the local output or encoder output, then confirm the incoming picture in Live Control Room.
- Read the health message and change only the setting relevant to its warning.
- Repeat the test and note whether that specific change corrected the preview before using the setup for a real event.
YouTube recommends testing before going live with representative audio and video movement. Its live streaming tips provide additional guidance for preparing and monitoring a stream.
Why a universal FFmpeg fix is unsafe
FFmpeg commands vary with the input source, available encoders, filters, stream mapping, frame rate, scaling, bitrate, and destination. The following is only a schematic illustration of the general input-to-RTMP workflow, not a tested fix or a complete command for every source:

ffmpeg -re -i INPUT -c:v libx264 -c:a aac -f flv 'RTMP_URL_WITH_CURRENT_STREAM_KEY'Replace the schematic input and destination with values appropriate to your setup, and apply the current YouTube recommendations when relevant. A camera or desktop source may require different input options; an existing stream may need different mapping or timing. Never post a real stream key when asking for help. FFmpeg documents the general RTMP and FLV workflow in its protocol documentation and formats and muxers documentation.
Troubleshoot by symptom
- The local output is black: check that FFmpeg opened the intended video input, that a device or capture source is available and permitted, and that filters, mapping, and encoding are not removing the picture.
- The local output is fine, but YouTube has no preview: verify the current event’s URL and stream key, then check the Live Control Room health indicator for ingest or format errors.
- The preview appears, then turns black or drops: monitor stream health and the outbound connection; test upload stability with representative movement and audio.
- The preview works but one viewer reports black video: ask whether the issue occurs on another device or connection. If reports are widespread, YouTube advises checking encoder output and the outbound connection.
- You need outside help: share the complete FFmpeg command with the key redacted, the relevant log, input type, whether a local recording is black, and the exact YouTube health message. These details locate the failing stage without exposing credentials.
