If your YouTube live stream keeps dropping, reseat the Ethernet cable and test with a known-good replacement before buying anything. A cable fault is plausible, but upload limits, a bad router port, shared network traffic, or encoder trouble can cause similar symptoms. The replacement test helps establish whether the cable is the cause.
Find out what is actually dropping
Before changing settings, note when the interruption occurs and what reports it. A computer may lose its wired network link, the encoder may stop sending, YouTube may flag stream health, or viewers may have playback trouble while your stream remains live. Record any warning shown by the computer, router or switch, encoder, or YouTube Live Control Room.
- Wired link: Check whether the computer reports that Ethernet disconnected or reconnected.
- Outgoing stream: Note encoder disconnects, reconnects, or errors.
- YouTube health: Watch the stream-health status and messages in Live Control Room.
- Viewer playback: Ask whether one viewer or several viewers on different connections are affected.
Reseat and inspect the cable
YouTube recommends an Ethernet connection for livestreaming from a computer. A physical check is a sensible first diagnostic step, though YouTube’s guidance does not prescribe a particular cable-inspection checklist.
- Stop or pause the stream if you can do so without disrupting an event.
- Unplug the Ethernet cable at both the computer and the router or switch, then plug each end back in firmly.
- Inspect the cable and connector ends for visible damage, sharp kinks, or retention clips that no longer hold the plug securely.
- Check whether the computer’s wired connection stays linked. If the problem persists, try another available router or switch port, if appropriate.
A different port can help distinguish a cable problem from a port fault. Do not treat a single successful reconnect as proof: intermittent faults can be difficult to reproduce.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Substitute a known-good Ethernet cable
Use a known-good cable with compatible connectors and enough length to connect the computer to the same router or switch. Keep the rest of the setup unchanged as much as possible, then observe the wired link and stream during a test.
- If the link and stream stabilize: The original cable is a strong suspect. Replace it with a compatible Ethernet patch cable.
- If the problem remains: Do not keep buying cables. Continue checking the port, upload capacity, shared network, and encoder.
- If results are unclear: Repeat a controlled test, changing one item at a time. A basic RJ45 cable tester may help check the cable, but it does not establish that your internet connection has adequate outbound capacity.
No particular cable category, brand, length, or model is established as necessary here. A premium cable cannot resolve network congestion, an unstable ISP connection, a faulty port, or an encoder problem.

Check upload capacity against the stream bitrate
Download speed alone does not show whether your connection can sustain a live stream. Run an outbound internet speed test under conditions similar to the stream, including the same wired connection and typical household or venue network activity. YouTube says the total stream bitrate must fit the available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. Shared network traffic can reduce the capacity available to your stream. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
Compare sustainable upload capacity with the encoder’s total outgoing bitrate. Include a backup stream if the encoder sends one; do not compare only the primary stream bitrate. YouTube’s published recommendations below are encoder settings guidance, not universal internet-plan minimums or guarantees that a connection will be stable.

These figures are YouTube Help recommendations; the returned settings page did not state a publication date. Match the recommendation to the codec, resolution, and frame rate actually configured in your encoder, then allow headroom for network variation and other traffic. The full guidance is on YouTube’s encoder settings page.
Separate a connection problem from encoder or viewer trouble
Check the encoder and Live Control Room
Review the encoder preview, its error messages, computer CPU load, and YouTube stream health. YouTube advises that if the stream looks and sounds healthy in the encoder, there may be an outbound-connection issue; test outbound internet and contact your ISP if testing identifies a connection problem. Follow YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance.

Compare viewer reports
A playback problem reported by one viewer may be on that viewer’s computer or connection. Reports from multiple viewers on different connections can point toward an encoder issue. Viewer reports are clues, not proof; compare them with the encoder and Live Control Room indicators rather than diagnosing from one report alone.
Test under realistic conditions
Before the next public event, run a test with audio and movement similar to the real stream. Monitor stream health and messages while it runs. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring during the event in its encoder settings and bitrate guidance.

When to contact your ISP
Escalate to your internet provider if the cable and local port checks do not resolve the issue and outbound tests show that the connection cannot sustain the stream’s total bitrate with headroom, or if the wired connection remains unstable across known-good cables and ports. Share the test conditions, available upload results, stream bitrate, and times of interruptions. If upload capacity looks adequate but encoder health or CPU load shows errors, investigate the encoder and computer instead of assuming the ISP is at fault.
Or let it run in the cloud
