For YouTube’s “incorrect video size (resolution)” warning, make the encoder’s outgoing width and height match the resolution selected in Live Control Room’s Ingestion Settings. If the stream’s resolution is changing unexpectedly, check whether the encoder is switching output dimensions or whether a manually selected resolution is pinned. Don’t change several settings at once: read the full health message first, then test the specific correction.
Identify the warning before changing settings
In YouTube Live Control Room, read the full message beside the Health Indicator and note its timestamp. YouTube health messages identify a reported problem; a continuing error can reappear until it is fixed. Red indicates a critical error, while yellow indicates a moderate problem that may reduce stream quality. Use the wording of the message to choose what to check rather than assuming every resolution change has the same cause. YouTube’s stream health guidance explains the indicator and messages.
Fix an “incorrect video size” warning
- Check the selected resolution. In Live Control Room, open Settings and review Ingestion Settings for the stream. Note the chosen resolution.
- Check the encoder’s actual output dimensions. Open the video output settings in the encoder and compare its width and height with the selected resolution. YouTube’s rule is explicit: “Your video must be the height and width of the resolution that you chose on the Ingestion Settings page.” A mismatch is the core issue to correct. YouTube’s troubleshooting steps for encoder issues describe this check.
- Make the two settings agree. Either configure the encoder to send the selected dimensions or select a resolution that matches the encoder output. Avoid changing unrelated settings unless the health message points to them.
- Check for a source-triggered change. If the warning appears when the source changes, verify whether the encoder changes its output dimensions along with that source. With manual settings, keep the outgoing dimensions consistent with the configured resolution.
- Test and watch the result. Check the Live Control Room preview and health messages after applying the correction. Test with representative video movement and audio before relying on the setup for a long broadcast.
Choose automatic detection or a manual resolution
YouTube recommends automatic resolution and frame-rate detection by default: “By default (recommended), YouTube will automatically detect your resolution and frame rate.” If you need to set resolution manually, YouTube provides that option through a custom stream key. The encoder still needs to send dimensions that match the manually selected resolution. Review YouTube’s stream settings guidance for the current options and interface details.
| Configuration | When it fits | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Automatic resolution and frame-rate detection | You want YouTube to detect the incoming settings; this is the default recommendation. | Check the encoder output and monitor health messages if the source or output changes. |
| Manual resolution using a custom stream key | You need to specify a resolution and frame rate. | Confirm that the encoder continues sending the selected width and height, including after a source change. |
YouTube describes a stream key as the credential and destination information an encoder uses to send a feed. A resolution warning alone does not establish that the key needs to be reset; only address the key if you have a key-related problem. YouTube’s stream key guidance covers using and managing keys.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Check bitrate and upload capacity
Resolution is only one part of a stable encoder setup. YouTube’s current encoder guidance gives bitrate recommendations by ingestion codec, resolution and frame rate. Use the relevant current figures for your actual configuration instead of relying on an old generic bitrate number. If your connection cannot sustain the chosen resolution, YouTube says to consider lowering the selected resolution. Check YouTube’s encoder settings page for the latest recommendations.
- Compare the encoder’s configured bitrate with YouTube’s recommendation for the selected codec, resolution and frame rate.
- Measure available upload capacity, not just download speed. YouTube’s network tips recommend leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom.
- If you send primary and backup feeds, account for both when assessing upload capacity.
- If capacity is inadequate, reduce the selected resolution and set the encoder’s output dimensions to match.
YouTube’s general encoder settings list RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265 (HEVC) and AV1 options; frame rates up to 60 fps; constant bitrate (CBR); and a recommended two-second keyframe frequency that should not exceed four seconds. These are general settings, not a guarantee that every codec is available for every stream configuration. Confirm the current settings and bitrate tables with YouTube before changing an encoder.

Verify backup-stream compatibility
If your setup uses encoder failover, compare the primary and backup streams. YouTube lists resolution, codec, interlacing, profile, bitrate, frame rate and audio settings as values that should match between them. A backup that sends a different resolution may create a new problem when it takes over. Test failover before depending on it for a continuous broadcast. YouTube’s encoder failover guidance covers backup-stream setup.
Handle a resolution change carefully on a 24/7 stream
YouTube’s reviewed guidance explains how to match encoder dimensions to the selected resolution, but it does not guarantee that changing resolution during an already-running 24/7 broadcast will preserve continuity. As an operational precaution—not a YouTube guarantee—keep the outgoing dimensions consistent during a live session, test the intended configuration in advance, and plan a suitable transition if the encoder cannot change output safely in place. Exact behavior depends on the encoder and its configuration. YouTube’s documented dimension-matching rule is the reason to verify the new configuration before applying it to an ongoing stream.

Test the corrected setup before relying on it
- Run a test with representative video movement and audio.
- Check the Live Control Room preview, health indicator and any timestamped messages.
- Confirm the stream is accessible and the encoder is sending the expected resolution, frame rate and bitrate.
- If you use failover, test that the backup feed takes over with matching settings.
YouTube recommends testing before going live, monitoring health and messages, and checking the preview. For encoder-based workflows, it also recommends testing backup failover. See YouTube’s testing guidance.
Common causes and fixes
| What you see | What to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| “Incorrect video size (resolution)” | Encoder output width and height versus the resolution in Ingestion Settings. | Set the encoder dimensions and selected resolution to match. |
| Warning appears after a source change | Whether the encoder changes output dimensions when the source changes, especially with manual settings. | Keep output dimensions consistent with the configured resolution, then test again. |
| Stream struggles at the selected resolution | Encoder bitrate against YouTube’s current guidance and available upload capacity. | Leave YouTube’s recommended upload headroom; if capacity is insufficient, lower the resolution and match the encoder output. |
| Problem begins during backup takeover | Whether primary and backup settings match, including resolution, codec, bitrate and frame rate. | Align the listed settings and test failover. |
| You are considering resetting the stream key | Whether the message actually indicates a key problem. | Do not reset it just for a resolution mismatch; fix the dimensions unless the key itself is at fault. |
