The game or its launcher must provide a Direct3D 10 renderer or a documented launch option. Check the title’s graphics settings and official launch documentation first; an arbitrary -dx10 flag will do nothing unless that game recognizes it.
DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 feature levels are not the same thing
“DirectX 10” can refer to either the legacy Direct3D 10 API or a lower hardware capability tier used by a Direct3D 11 application. They are different.
- Legacy Direct3D 10: The game creates and uses a D3D10 rendering device. This requires a separate renderer implemented by the game.
- Direct3D 11 feature level 10_0 or 10_1: The game still uses the D3D11 API, but requests capabilities associated with an older hardware tier. Microsoft documents 10_0 and 10_1 as feature levels that a D3D11 application can request.
A lower feature level can remove newer capabilities, but it does not turn a D3D11 device into a Direct3D 10 device. Your graphics card supporting feature level 10_0 therefore does not guarantee that a particular game has a usable DX10 renderer.
Check whether the game officially supports DX10
Renderer selection is title-specific. Look in these places, in this order:
#1 Best Overall
- Powered by Radeon RX 9070 XT
- WINDFORCE Cooling System
- Hawk Fan
- Server-grade Thermal Conductive Gel
- RGB Lighting
- Open the game’s graphics or video menu and look for a renderer, API, or display-mode selector.
- Read the publisher’s launch-options or graphics documentation for the exact switch and spelling.
- Check the launcher’s advanced options. A title that supports DX10 may expose a checkbox rather than a command-line argument.
- Identify the engine if the publisher documents engine-specific options. Engine syntax is not interchangeable between games.
A documented option such as -dx10 or -d3d10 is valid only when that specific game supports it. Steam does not provide a universal DirectX 10 switch; Steam merely passes the launch text to the game.
Procedure for trying a supported renderer
- Identify the executable and launcher. Confirm which program actually starts the game and whether the launcher has its own graphics settings.
- Find the official option. Use the publisher’s documentation or the game’s own settings. Copy the argument exactly, including hyphens, numbers, and capitalization.
- Add the option where the game expects it. In Steam, this is typically the game’s Properties window and its Launch Options field. Other launchers may use a separate command-line or advanced-settings panel.
- Restart the game completely. A renderer choice usually applies only when the process starts.
- Verify the result. Use the game’s display-information screen, log file, or graphics diagnostics to confirm whether it reports D3D10, D3D11, or another API. Do not infer success from a change in frame rate or visual appearance.
- Remove unsupported switches. If the game rejects the argument, crashes, or still reports D3D11, delete the option and return to the supported configuration.
Unity games: what -force-feature-level-10-0 actually does
Unity’s official Standalone Player command-line reference lists -force-feature-level-10-0 and defines it as “Force DirectX 11.0 feature level 10.0.” This option applies to a Unity player that accepts the argument.

It requests a D3D11 device at feature level 10.0. It does not select the legacy Direct3D 10 API. It is therefore useful when your goal is to lower the capabilities exposed to a Unity game, not when you specifically need a D3D10 renderer.
After adding the argument through the game’s supported launch-options mechanism, restart the title and inspect its own log or graphics diagnostics. If the game requires D3D11 features above 10_0, it may fail to start, disable effects, or ignore the request.

How the available approaches compare
| Approach | What it selects | Official game support required? | Main limitation | How to confirm |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Game menu or launcher renderer selector | Potentially the game’s legacy D3D10 renderer | Yes | Only available in titles that implement and expose that path | In-game display information or logs |
Documented -dx10 or -d3d10 |
Whatever renderer that specific title associates with the switch, possibly legacy D3D10 | Yes | The spelling and behavior vary by game; an unrecognized flag is ignored or rejected | Renderer shown by the game or its log |
Unity -force-feature-level-10-0 |
D3D11 feature level 10.0 | Yes; the game must be a compatible Unity player | It is not the legacy D3D10 API and cannot provide features the game requires | Unity/game graphics diagnostics or log |
| Installing or updating DirectX | No renderer selection | No | Runtime packages supply components; they do not change a game’s chosen API | Not applicable |
Why common “force DX10” fixes fail
Adding a random launch argument
Launch arguments are parsed by the game, not by Windows or Steam. A flag copied from another title may be ignored, produce an error, or start the game with no change.
Installing the latest DirectX package
Microsoft states that the DirectX runtime package does not change the installed versions of Direct3D 10.x or 11.x. It installs runtime components needed by applications; it does not select a renderer for an individual game.

Assuming a DX11-capable GPU guarantees DX10 compatibility
Many DX11-capable GPUs expose lower feature levels, but hardware capability alone cannot create a renderer that the application does not implement. The game must request and use the lower API or feature level.
Confusing a feature-level fallback with an API change
A D3D11 application requesting 10_0 remains a D3D11 application. Shaders, resource formats, and other requirements still have to be supported by the game’s code path.

If the game will not run at DX10
- Remove the launch argument and start with the game’s default renderer.
- Check whether the title lists D3D11 as a minimum requirement; a lower feature level cannot supply missing shaders or API features.
- Use the game’s supported graphics presets or compatibility settings instead of forcing an undocumented API.
- Verify the actual renderer in logs or diagnostics before troubleshooting drivers or hardware.
Answers to the practical questions
Is there a universal Windows setting?
No. Renderer selection belongs to the game, launcher, or engine.
Is there a universal Steam launch option?
No. Steam can pass a game-specific argument, but it does not define one DX10 switch that works across titles.
Can a card limited to feature level 10_0 run a DX10-compatible game?
Only if the game implements a compatible D3D10 path or a D3D11 path that supports feature level 10_0. The card’s capability does not make that path exist.
Does -force-feature-level-10-0 mean the game is using DirectX 10?
No. In Unity’s terminology it means DirectX 11.0 at feature level 10.0.
