In Minecraft: Java Edition, click the game window and press F11. In Minecraft for Windows (Bedrock), try F11; if it does not work, open Settings → Video and turn on Fullscreen. On some laptops, the key is Fn + F11.
First, identify your Minecraft edition
The instructions differ slightly by edition. On Windows, the Launcher may offer both editions in the Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition for PC bundle.

Java’s official hotkey reference lists F11 as the fullscreen toggle. For Bedrock, the reliable menu route is Settings → Video; Minecraft’s support documentation identifies Video as the place for display and graphics options. Menu labels can vary between releases and modded clients.

Fullscreen in Minecraft: Java Edition
Use the keyboard shortcut
- Launch Java Edition and open a world, or stay at the title screen.
- Click inside the Minecraft window so it has focus.
- Press F11. The title bar, window borders, and taskbar should disappear as the game fills the display.
- Press F11 again to return to windowed mode.

Use Video Settings instead
- Open Options.
- Select Video Settings.
- Enable the fullscreen option.
- If the menu offers a fullscreen resolution, choose your monitor’s native resolution for a sharp image, or a supported lower resolution if you need to reduce rendering load.
Java menus can change between versions. Modded interfaces, including menus altered by graphics or performance mods, may use different labels or place display controls elsewhere.
Fullscreen in Minecraft for Windows (Bedrock)
Use the Video menu
- From the title screen, select Settings.
- Open Video.
- Find Fullscreen and switch it on.
- Return to the game and check that it fills the intended display.
Minecraft’s Bedrock video-settings guidance directs players to Settings → Video for graphics and display controls.

Try the shortcut
You can also try F11 while Bedrock is active. This shortcut is reported for Bedrock, but the official Minecraft hotkey reference cited above documents Java specifically, so use the Video menu if the key does nothing. On some laptop keyboards, press Fn + F11 to send the function key rather than a brightness or other hardware command.

How to leave fullscreen
- Java: Press F11 again.
- Bedrock: Try F11, or return to Settings → Video and switch off Fullscreen.
- If you need to get to another app: Press Alt + Tab. Switching may behave differently in exclusive fullscreen than in a windowed or borderless mode.
- If the game is stuck: Use Alt + F4 only as a last resort; it closes Minecraft. Save first if you can.
If Minecraft will not go fullscreen
Try these checks in order:
- Give the game focus. Click the Minecraft window, then press F11 again.
- Check your laptop’s function-key behavior. Try Fn + F11; check for an Fn-lock or function-key mode if the top row controls brightness or volume instead.
- Use the edition’s menu. Java: Options → Video Settings. Bedrock: Settings → Video.
- Try Alt + Enter as a secondary shortcut. It is a commonly suggested Windows game shortcut, but may not work in every Minecraft edition, launcher, or version.
- Test without overlays. Temporarily disable overlays or recording features such as Xbox Game Bar, Discord, NVIDIA, or AMD overlays, then try again. This is a troubleshooting test, not a guaranteed fix.
- Restart Minecraft. If the setting was changed but the display did not update properly, close and reopen the game.
- For recurring issues, update the game, Windows, and graphics driver. Minecraft’s crash and lag troubleshooting guidance also recommends closing unnecessary programs.
- If you use mods, test the unmodded client. If fullscreen works there, add mods back one at a time to identify whether one changes the settings screen or display behavior.
Fix a visible taskbar, borders, or display problems
The taskbar or title bar is still visible
The game may still be windowed, may have lost focus, or may be using a mode that behaves like a maximized window rather than exclusive fullscreen. Toggle fullscreen off and on using the relevant shortcut or Video setting, then click back into the game. You can also press Alt + Tab away and back. If the Windows taskbar itself appears stuck over other apps, that is a Windows shell issue rather than a Minecraft setting; restarting Windows Explorer may help, but it is not normally required for fullscreen.

The image is blurry, stretched, or cropped
- In Minecraft’s fullscreen resolution options, use the monitor’s native resolution where possible.
- In Windows, check Settings → System → Display and confirm the intended monitor is selected.
- On a multi-monitor setup, first move Minecraft to the desired display while windowed, then enable fullscreen again.
- Use only a resolution and refresh rate supported by the monitor. If a mode produces a black screen or does not recover cleanly, return to a supported setting and restart Minecraft.
You usually do not need to change Windows’ desktop resolution just to use fullscreen in Minecraft. Resolution controls and available refresh rates vary by Minecraft edition and version.
Fullscreen opens on the wrong monitor
Switch Minecraft back to windowed mode, move the window to the intended monitor, then re-enable fullscreen. The game or Windows may remember the previous display. Exclusive fullscreen and borderless modes can also handle the cursor differently on multi-monitor setups.

The screen goes black after changing modes
Wait briefly to see whether the display mode recovers. If the game still responds, use Alt + Tab to switch away, then return or change to a supported resolution. If it remains unresponsive, close and restart Minecraft; use Alt + F4 only if necessary, since it closes the game.
Fullscreen, borderless, and windowed modes

Recent Java release notes mention an Exclusive Fullscreen video setting and Adaptive Sync behavior. Whether you see this option depends on your installed version. See the Java 26.2 release notes for that version’s details. No mode guarantees higher FPS: performance depends on resolution, graphics settings, hardware, drivers, mods, and other running programs.
If fullscreen affects performance
Fullscreen changes how Minecraft is presented and interacts with the display; it is not a performance upgrade by itself. If the game slows down, try a lower supported resolution or reduce demanding graphics options. Bedrock’s Video settings include graphics modes and related performance controls; Minecraft’s Vibrant Visuals guidance notes that the mode uses more system resources and can be adjusted toward performance. Updating the graphics driver and closing programs you do not need may also help. Lowering resolution can improve rendering load but makes the image less sharp.
For streaming or frequent app switching, borderless mode or a window may be more convenient. For a straightforward fullscreen image, start with the game’s own setting rather than installing a third-party borderless-window utility.
