With Minecraft open, press F11 to toggle fullscreen. On some laptops, use Fn + F11. If the shortcut does nothing, turn on Fullscreen in Minecraft’s video settings: Java Edition uses Options → Video Settings; Bedrock uses Settings → Video. Press F11 again to return to windowed mode.
Identify your Minecraft edition
The menu route depends on which edition you are playing. Java Edition normally shows Options on its main menu; Bedrock normally shows Settings. In the launcher, the Windows Bedrock game may be labeled Minecraft for Windows. Launcher layouts can change, so use the menus shown in the game rather than relying on a particular launcher layout. Use the quickest method: press F11
- Open Minecraft and enter the title screen, a world, or a server.
- Click inside the game window so Minecraft has keyboard focus.
- Press F11 and wait briefly for the display to resize.
- To leave fullscreen, press F11 again.
Fullscreen should fill the display and hide the game’s title bar and Windows taskbar. Minecraft’s official Java hotkey reference documents F11 as the fullscreen toggle.
If you are using a laptop or compact keyboard
Some keyboards use the function row for brightness, display, or other hardware controls. Try Fn + F11. If your keyboard has an Fn Lock key, toggle it and try F11 again. A separate keyboard can help determine whether the laptop’s function-key layer is intercepting the press; Fn + F11 is a keyboard variation, not a separate Minecraft command.

Turn on fullscreen in Java Edition
- Open the in-game menu and select Options.
- Select Video Settings.
- Find Fullscreen and turn it on.
- Apply the change or close the menu, depending on the interface in your version.
The control’s appearance or location can vary with the Java version, mods, and resource packs. Some newer Java builds expose additional controls: for example, the Java Edition 26.2 notes reference an Exclusive Fullscreen setting. Do not expect that option in every version or modded installation.
Turn on fullscreen in Bedrock Edition
- Launch Minecraft for Windows and open Settings.
- Choose the Video tab.
- Turn on Fullscreen, then return to the game.
Minecraft’s Bedrock performance guidance uses the Settings → Video route for video options; the Bedrock menu reference identifies fullscreen as a Video setting. Exact layouts can vary. If the control is missing or unavailable while you are in a world, save and exit to the title screen, then open Settings → Video. Some settings are easier to change outside an active world, as noted in Minecraft’s guidance for managing Vibrant Visuals graphics settings.

If F11 does nothing
- Click inside Minecraft, then press F11 again.
- On a laptop, try Fn + F11; on a compact keyboard, check the alternate function-key layer.
- Use the edition’s in-game Fullscreen setting instead of the shortcut.
- Temporarily close keyboard-remapping utilities or overlays that might capture the key.
- Close and relaunch Minecraft after changing the setting.
Some players report Alt + Enter as an older or sometimes-supported fallback, but it is not a guaranteed current Minecraft control. Prefer F11 or the in-game setting. For crashes or persistent display problems, Minecraft’s troubleshooting guidance recommends steps such as updating the game and graphics driver, closing other programs, and adjusting video settings.

- Toggle fullscreen off and on with F11.
- Set Fullscreen directly in Minecraft’s Video settings.
- Check that Minecraft has focus, then restart the game.
- If the issue appears tied to windowed or borderless presentation, review Windows graphics options and relaunch Minecraft.
Windows 11’s Settings → System → Display → Graphics page includes optimizations for windowed games, but those options are not the normal Minecraft fullscreen switch. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 windowed-game guidance. A visible taskbar alone does not establish a particular Windows fault.

Windowed, maximized, fullscreen, and borderless are not identical
- Windowed: Minecraft appears in a desktop window, generally with a title bar.
- Maximized: The window fills most or all of the desktop but still behaves like a normal Windows window.
- Fullscreen: Minecraft takes over the display and normally hides the title bar and taskbar.
- Borderless fullscreen: The game visually fills the screen while technically remaining windowed. Availability and behavior depend on edition, version, launcher, mods, and graphics configuration.
Focus on the result you want—Minecraft filling the monitor without the taskbar or title bar—rather than assuming every version uses the same technical display mode.
If fullscreen causes a black screen, flicker, or incorrect sizing
- Press F11 again to return to windowed mode; if the display does not recover, close and relaunch Minecraft.
- Check which monitor Windows is using and confirm its active resolution. In Minecraft, choose a fullscreen resolution that matches the intended monitor where possible.
- Update the graphics driver from the GPU manufacturer, then test again.
- For Java, test an unmodded profile. Temporarily disable shaders, mods, and overlays to isolate conflicts.
- If you use multiple monitors, temporarily make the intended display primary or launch Minecraft on that monitor.
Fullscreen entry and exit can briefly resize the display. Alt + Tab, monitor switching, and scaling may behave differently between exclusive fullscreen and borderless or windowed modes. Resolution, refresh rate, drivers, mods, and overlays are diagnostic factors—not guaranteed fixes.

Choose fullscreen or a windowed mode

Performance also depends on edition, graphics driver, resolution, refresh rate, shaders, mods, render distance, and other video settings. If Bedrock lags, Minecraft’s performance guidance identifies graphics mode, render distance, clouds, lighting, and visual effects among the settings to consider.
