In Minecraft Java Edition 1.21.5 or later, use this command in a world where you’re allowed to run commands:
/give @s minecraft:netherite_sword[enchantments={sharpness:255}] 1This creates a netherite sword with Sharpness 255. You can replace minecraft:netherite_sword with another sword item ID, such as minecraft:diamond_sword.
How to use the command
- Open a Java Edition world or server where you have permission to use commands.
- Enter
/give @s minecraft:netherite_sword[enchantments={sharpness:255}] 1in chat or the command interface. - Check your inventory for the sword. The
@sselector gives the item to the player executing the command.
The command uses square brackets for item components and an inline enchantment map. Mojang’s Java Edition 1.21.5 notes show that the enchantments component was simplified by inlining its levels field; the earlier form was enchantments={levels:{sharpness:2}}. The current command syntax is documented in Mojang’s Java Edition 1.21.5 release notes and Snapshot 24w09a notes.
What “Sharpness 255” means
Sharpness 255 is an over-levelled sword created with a command, not an item obtained through ordinary enchanting. Mojang’s Java Edition 1.20.5 technical notes specify that enchantment levels are integers from 0 through 255, making 255 the documented upper bound for this component format: Java Edition 1.20.5 release notes.

Edition and version differences
Java Edition 1.21.5 and later
Use the command above, which uses the simplified component syntax introduced in Java Edition 1.21.5.
Java Edition 1.20.5 through 1.21.4
Java 1.20.5 introduced component-based item formatting and documents the 0–255 enchantment level range. However, the enchantments component syntax changed in 1.21.5, so don’t assume the current inline form works unchanged in earlier versions.

Older Java command examples
Older guides may use item NBT syntax such as {Enchantments:[...]}. That legacy format is different from the current square-bracket component format; don’t combine the two. The Minecraft Wiki’s Useful commands tutorial includes historical custom-enchantment examples.
Bedrock Edition
This is a Java Edition command, not a Bedrock Edition instruction. The Bedrock /give command has a different argument structure, and the sources cited here do not establish that it can create Sharpness 255. Check documentation for your specific Bedrock release or add-on environment before trying an alternative.

If the command does not work
- “Unknown or incomplete command”: Confirm that the game is Java Edition 1.21.5 or later and that the command matches the version’s component syntax.
- You cannot run commands: Your world or server must permit you to use commands. The required permission depends on its settings.
- You are using a different sword: Change only the item ID—for example, use
minecraft:diamond_swordin place ofminecraft:netherite_sword. - You are on Bedrock Edition: Do not use this Java command as a Bedrock solution; its syntax and support are not established here.
