To take a standard Titanite weapon from +5 to +10 in Dark Souls (DS1), find the Large Ember in the Depths, give it to Andre of Astora in the Undead Parish, then use Modify Equipment to ascend the weapon from +5 to +6. Reinforce it from +6 through +10 with Large Titanite Shards. That stretch costs nine Large Titanite Shards in total: one for the ascension and eight for the four reinforcements.
Before you start: this is the standard upgrade path
These steps apply to a weapon on the standard Titanite path, not every weapon or upgrade branch. Other paths use different embers, smiths, and materials. A standard weapon must be at +5 before Andre can perform the +5-to-+6 transition. The game separates that tier change, called ascension, from ordinary reinforcement.

How to upgrade a standard weapon from +0 to +10

Reinforce the weapon to +5
At a blacksmith or with the appropriate upgrade access, reinforce a standard weapon from +0 to +5. The five upgrades require nine Titanite Shards total: 1, 1, 2, 2, and 3. Upgrade-material requirements are listed in the Dark Souls upgrade table.

Find the Large Ember in the Depths
In the Depths, look for a chest near the table with raw meat in the Butcher area. The Large Ember location guide gives the location details.

Give the Large Ember to Andre
Take the ember to Andre of Astora, the blacksmith in the Undead Parish, and hand it over. This unlocks the standard weapon’s +5-to-+6 ascension.

Use Modify Equipment to ascend +5 to +6
At Andre, open Modify Equipment and select the +5-to-+6 transition for the eligible weapon. This ascension uses one Large Titanite Shard. Having the shard without completing the transition does not unlock +6 reinforcement.

Reinforce from +6 through +10
Use Reinforce Weapon for the next four levels. The costs are one Large Titanite Shard for +6 to +7, two for +7 to +8, two for +8 to +9, and three for +9 to +10. These four reinforcements use eight shards, or nine when you include the ascension shard.
If the weapon will not go past +5
- Confirm the ember was handed to Andre. Finding or carrying the Large Ember is not enough; Andre must receive it to unlock the standard transition.
- Check Modify Equipment, not only Reinforce Weapon. The +5-to-+6 step is an ascension. Reinforcement from +6 upward becomes available after that transition.
- Check the weapon’s upgrade path. If it is on a different branch, the standard route through Andre and Large Titanite Shards may not apply. Fire, for example, uses Vamos and a Large Flame Ember for its +5-to-+6 transition; Divine progression has its own ember requirement. Is +10 the maximum?
No. +10 is the target in this guide, but it is not the cap for the standard path. To continue toward +15, you need the Very Large Ember for the separate +10-to-+11 ascension; later upgrades use Titanite Chunks and a Titanite Slab. Details for the next transition are in the Very Large Ember guide.
