To get a Sandstar in Monster Hunter Wilds, search the Windward Plains at night around Areas 11, 13, and 16—starting at the Area 13 oasis—and use a Screamer Pod to stun it before firing your Capture Net. Plenty is the best condition to try first, but it may not be mandatory.
The fastest reliable way to get a Sandstar in Monster Hunter Wilds is to search the Windward Plains at night, starting around the Area 13 oasis, and stun the creature with a Screamer Pod before throwing your Capture Net. Search Areas 11, 13, and 16, with the dunes and borders between those areas as your main route.
Sandstar location, time, and conditions
| Requirement | What to do |
|---|---|
| Locale | Windward Plains |
| Time | Nighttime |
| Best initial environment | Plenty |
| Areas to search | 11, 13, and 16 |
| Best landmark | The oasis in Area 13 |
| Capture tools | Screamer Pod and Capture Net |
Nighttime is the important condition reported consistently for Sandstar sightings. Plenty is the safest condition to try first because it is the environment most often recommended by guides, but it may not be a strict requirement. Available location information differs: some listings specify Nighttime and Plenty, while others report possible appearances in additional weather conditions, including Fallow and, less commonly, Sandtide inclemency. If you are already searching at night in another condition, it is worth checking before resetting the environment.
Best Sandstar search route
- Travel to the Windward Plains at the beginning of nighttime if possible.
- Start at the Area 13 oasis. An Area 13 pop-up camp is useful if you plan to repeat the search.
- Check the oasis and the surrounding dunes carefully.
- Sweep toward the borders connecting Areas 13, 11, and 16, watching both the open sand and the edges of terrain.
- If you do not find one, travel away and return, reset the environment, or repeat the route during another nighttime cycle.
The Sandstar is small and extremely fast, so a route is more effective than standing in one place waiting for it. Keep the camera moving across the dunes rather than relying only on the map icon or a single landmark.

How to recognize the Sandstar
Look for a small, bright blue creature with long legs. It has a dark tail ending in another blue orb. The blue glow is particularly noticeable in the darkness, but the Sandstar can still be easy to miss because it moves quickly and may flee as soon as you get close.
What to bring before you search
- Capture Net: Put it in an easily accessible essential-item slot or radial-menu slot. You need to switch to it immediately after stunning the Sandstar.
- At least one Screamer Pod: This is the most dependable way to create a capture opportunity.
- Seikret: A mount helps you keep up with the creature, although simply chasing it is not a reliable capture method.
How to get a Screamer Pod
Use the Hook Slinger to collect an Echo Feather from a Baunos in the Windward Plains. Baunos can be found in locations including around Area 4 and near Area 11. Obtain the Screamer Pod before beginning the Sandstar search so that you do not lose an encounter while gathering the required item.
How to capture the Sandstar
- Find the glowing Sandstar in the desert.
- Do not expect a slow, stealthy approach to solve the problem. The creature is highly sensitive and is likely to run.
- Fire a Screamer Pod near the Sandstar.
- As soon as it is stunned or immobilized, switch to the Capture Net.
- Aim at the stationary creature and fire the net before the stun wears off.
The timing between steps three and five matters more than the distance of your initial approach. Have the Capture Net ready in your radial menu, and avoid spending the stun window navigating through several item screens.

What if the Sandstar runs away?
The Ghillie Mantle is not a dependable answer; reported testing indicates that it does not stop the Sandstar from fleeing. If your Screamer Pod misses or the creature escapes before you can use the net, stay on the Seikret and continue watching its path. Sandstars may double back or become briefly obstructed by terrain, thorny vegetation, or nearby creature activity. Those moments can provide another opening, but resetting and searching again is usually less frustrating than pursuing it indefinitely across the map.
Samin’s Special Research Report
The Sandstar is the target of Samin’s Special Research Report, which is the final step in the Dareel/Samin endemic-life research sequence. Before assuming the creature or report is bugged, make sure you have:
- Completed the preceding Dareel/Samin endemic-life research missions.
- Progressed through the story mission Wyvern Sparks and Rose Thorns.
- Spoken with Samin at the Windward Plains base camp.
Guide descriptions differ on the exact chapter or Hunter Rank wording for the requirement. The practical requirement is consistent: finish the earlier research reports, advance through the specified story progression, and then check Samin at the base camp. After you capture the Sandstar, return to Samin and report the result.

Sandstar report rewards
The reported item rewards are 5 Wild Herbs, 10 Honey, and Guild Points. Sources agree on the item rewards but disagree about the Guild Point total: some report 300 Guild Points, while another Sandstar listing reports 500. Because of that conflict, do not rely on a specific Guild Point figure until the reward screen appears in your game.
Sandstar trophy or achievement
Your first successful Sandstar capture awards the bronze achievement or trophy “I Caught a Shooting Star!” Finding or observing the creature is not enough; the capture must succeed.

Quick troubleshooting checklist
- Confirm that the Windward Plains map shows Nighttime.
- Try Plenty first, while remembering that available reports disagree about whether it is mandatory.
- Search Areas 11, 13, and 16, prioritizing the Area 13 oasis and the connecting dunes.
- Carry a Screamer Pod and use it instead of trying to net the Sandstar while it is running.
- Keep the Capture Net immediately accessible after the stun lands.
- Use the Seikret to follow the creature, but do not depend on a straight chase.
- If nothing appears, travel away and return, reset the environment, or try the route during another nighttime cycle.
- If Samin’s report is missing, complete the earlier Dareel/Samin reports and progress past Wyvern Sparks and Rose Thorns.
Optional: buying the game
If you are following this guide because you have not yet bought the game, check the platform before ordering a Monster Hunter Wilds physical copy. Availability and the correct listing can vary between PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, so confirm the platform and current stock at checkout. A physical edition does not improve Sandstar spawn or capture odds; this is simply an optional purchase note for new players.

Yes. A Screamer Pod is the most reliable way to stop the Sandstar long enough to use the Capture Net. Fire the pod, switch immediately to the net, and capture it before the stun ends.
Does the Ghillie Mantle work on the Sandstar?
The Ghillie Mantle is not considered reliable because reported information says the Sandstar can still flee while it is active.
