Complete their side missions to receive them as rewards, or look for them later in Wild Zones 17, 18, and 16, respectively. They are not the game’s opening partner choices: those are Chikorita, Tepig, and Totodile.
When can you get the Kalos starters?
The three side missions become available after you reach Rank Y in the Z-A Royale, according to Nintendo Life’s guide. Bulbapedia places the missions before the battle with Xavi in its story walkthrough, so you can obtain the Pokémon during the adventure rather than waiting until you finish the main story.
The official Pokémon first-partner page identifies Chikorita, Tepig, and Totodile as the Pokémon you choose from at the start. Chespin, Fennekin, and Froakie are additional Pokémon to obtain through the missions or reported wild encounters.
How to get Chespin
Complete “A Feisty Chespin”
Find the “A Feisty Chespin” side mission near Centrico Plaza. Help resolve a confrontation involving Chespin and a taxi, then defeat Chespin in three consecutive battles. It joins you after the battles.

Find Chespin in the wild
Chespin is also reported in Wild Zone 17, where it appears in dirt mounds. This gives you an alternative to completing its side mission, provided you can reach the zone.
How to get Fennekin
Complete “Get Well, Fennekin”
Speak to the woman beside a sick Fennekin in Magenta District to begin the mission. She sends you to a Pokémon herbalist at Café Classe. Next, go to the sewer area in Wild Zone 5 and search for a Revitalizing Twig. Bulbapedia’s walkthrough says there are five twig spots in the room and that you must collect them all to find a fresh twig. Return it to Fennekin to complete the mission and have it join you.

Find Fennekin in the wild
Fennekin is reported on rooftops in Wild Zone 18. You can pursue this wild encounter instead of relying on the mission reward.
How to get Froakie
Complete “A Challenge from Froakie”
Start “A Challenge from Froakie” near the Jaune Pokémon Center. The mission asks you to complete three timed climbing courses. Later courses include gaps to cross; for wider gaps, roll across. Froakie joins you after you finish the final course.

Find Froakie in the wild
Froakie is also reported in Wild Zone 16, offering a wild alternative to its timed-course mission.

The missions have explicit objectives and award the named Pokémon when completed. Wild encounters are an alternative if you prefer to look for them in their zones. The available guides identify the locations, but do not establish that either method is faster.

What about their Mega Stones?
A guide updated April 16, 2026 reports that Chesnaughtite, Delphoxite, and Greninjite are earned through online Ranked Battles. Ranked Battle rewards can change by season, and an older guide’s season-specific information should not be treated as current. Check the in-game Ranked Battle rewards for the active schedule before planning around a particular Mega Stone.
