You do not need to read X-Men comics before playing Marvel’s Wolverine. Sony says the game tells an original story for newcomers and requires no previous knowledge of the comics or films. It launched worldwide exclusively on PlayStation 5 on September 15, 2026.
If you want a quick comics introduction anyway, start with Giant-Size X-Men (1975) #1. It introduces Wolverine as part of an international team, making it a straightforward bridge from Logan’s game to the wider X-Men.
Do you need to read X-Men comics first?
No. Sony describes Marvel’s Wolverine as an original story designed for newcomers. Its September 18, 2026 corporate blog says, “No previous knowledge of the comics or films are required.” The game follows Logan as he searches for answers about his past; Sony has named Jean Grey, Sabretooth, and Bolivar Trask among its characters.
The game is available worldwide exclusively on PlayStation 5. Sony announced its launch for September 15, 2026, and describes locations inspired by the Canadian wilderness, Tokyo, and Madripoor. The comics below are optional context, not a prerequisite or a required continuity checklist.

Choose a reading path based on what interests you
| Your goal | Where to start | What it gives you |
|---|---|---|
| Meet Wolverine as part of the X-Men | Giant-Size X-Men (1975) #1 | A single-issue entry to the international team, including Wolverine, Storm, Nightcrawler, and Colossus. |
| Read a landmark X-Men saga | The Dark Phoenix Saga or Days of Future Past | A major team story. These are optional landmark choices, not setup for the game. |
| Focus on Logan’s solo stories | Wolverine (1982) #1 | The start of his first solo adventure, a direct route if you are more interested in Wolverine than the team. |
| Try a more recent Wolverine series | Wolverine (2020) #1 | A later-era option if you would rather begin with a more recent run. |
These starting points come from Marvel’s official X-Men and Wolverine reading guides. The guides offer choices rather than a single mandatory order.
Start with the team: Giant-Size X-Men #1
For the clearest X-Men context in one issue, read Giant-Size X-Men (1975) #1. Marvel describes it as the story where Wolverine joins an international team that includes Storm, Nightcrawler, and Colossus. It gives you the team premise and Logan’s place in it without requiring a long lead-in.
Rank #2
If you enjoy the older style, continue with selected issues of Uncanny X-Men. Marvel’s guide identifies the Claremont-era run with major characters and stories including Phoenix, Dark Phoenix, and Days of Future Past. You can stop after the starting issue and still go into the game without missing required background.
Pick a landmark saga—or stay with Logan
For a major X-Men story
The Dark Phoenix Saga and Days of Future Past are both identified in Marvel’s lists as significant X-Men stories. Choose either if you want a substantial team-focused story rather than a brief introduction. Neither is established as a prerequisite for the game.

For Wolverine on his own
Marvel’s Wolverine guide points to Wolverine (1982) #1 as his first solo adventure. If that older era does not appeal, the same guide also points to Wolverine (2020) #1 as a later-era starting point. These are alternatives for exploring Logan’s comics history, not instructions for understanding the game’s plot.
How the comics relate to this game
Sony presents the game as an original interactive story, not an adaptation that requires you to follow a particular comics timeline. Its announced premise centers on Logan searching for answers about his past, and the named characters do not create a source-established reading order. A comic may add familiarity with the characters or team, but it cannot be treated as mandatory setup based on the available official guidance.
Rank #4
Sony’s launch announcement described the creative approach as “This original vision for Logan is a powerful example of making an iconic character shine on PlayStation 5 through extraordinary craftsmanship and a bold creative vision,” said Hermen Hulst, CEO, Studio Business, Sony Interactive Entertainment.
