For smoother play in Hogwarts Legacy on PC, first make sure your hardware is suited to your resolution, let the game finish its initial shader compilation, and then tune upscaling, ray tracing and frame-rate limits one at a time. There is no publisher-verified setting that guarantees a fixed FPS increase: performance depends on your PC and the scene, so compare changes on your own system.
Check whether your PC matches your resolution target
Warner Bros. Games publishes hardware tiers for several resolution and frame-rate targets. They are a useful baseline, not a promise that every scene will hold the target: settings, ray tracing and the particular area being rendered can affect performance.

These are the configurations and targets listed in Warner Bros. Games’ PC specifications. If your system falls below the tier for your chosen resolution, reducing settings or output resolution may help, but it cannot make weaker hardware equivalent to the listed tier. The game requires 85 GB of storage, and an SSD is preferred even for the minimum tier.
Let shader compilation finish before diagnosing stutter
On first launch, the game may compile shaders for several minutes. Portkey Games says this initial process depends on the PC configuration and memory, and that it should be much faster on subsequent launches. Avoid judging performance during that initial pass; let it complete, then check whether the same stutter persists after restarting the game.

Portkey’s PC Features FAQ explains that shader compilation helps provide the best player experience. A slow first boot alone therefore does not establish that a graphics setting or hardware component is the cause.
Use a repeatable test before changing settings
The game includes an in-game benchmark. Run it after shader compilation, and use the same repeatable route for any additional checks. Compare average FPS, but also pay attention to frame-time consistency: a higher average can still feel uneven if frames arrive in sudden bursts.

- Check a demanding indoor or school area, Hogsmeade, and open-world traversal rather than relying on one quiet scene.
- Change one setting at a time and record the result. Otherwise, it is difficult to know which change helped or worsened performance.
- Keep the resolution, route and other graphics options the same between comparisons.
This approach helps distinguish a persistent performance issue from a brief hitch or a scene-specific load. Warner Bros. and Portkey Games do not publish a universal FPS gain for individual settings.
Choose the upscaler that matches your graphics card
Hogwarts Legacy supports NVIDIA DLSS, AMD FSR and Intel XeSS. Start with the option that matches your GPU, then adjust its quality mode until the balance between image clarity and smoother frame delivery suits you. Upscaling renders internally at a lower resolution and reconstructs the output; modes that prioritize performance can look less crisp than those that prioritize image quality.

Support for the three technologies is documented in the Portkey Games PC Features FAQ. The best mode depends on your output resolution, GPU and tolerance for image softness, so compare modes in the same location rather than assuming one is universally best.
Reduce ray tracing before sacrificing every other setting
Ray tracing can affect both GPU and CPU performance. The PC version offers separate controls for ray-traced reflections, shadows, ambient occlusion and geometry. Ray tracing is off by default; changing it requires a restart. If frame times become inconsistent when ray tracing is enabled, turn down or disable those options first, restart, and repeat your test route.

Ray tracing is a visual-quality choice, not a necessary prerequisite for playing. Its cost varies with hardware and scene, so there is no reliable one-size-fits-all FPS penalty to quote. Portkey Games documents the controls and their performance considerations in its PC Features FAQ.

Frame generation can increase the displayed frame rate by generating intermediate frames, but a larger FPS counter does not necessarily mean the game responds more quickly to input. First make sure the underlying render feels responsive; then compare frame generation on and off. Use NVIDIA Reflex where available to help reduce latency.

The game added DLSS 4 and RTX 50-series Multi-Frame Generation in its January 30, 2025 PC patch. Those features are specific to supported NVIDIA hardware; their availability does not mean every PC can use them. Cap the frame rate if delivery swings around
Portkey documents an in-game frame-rate cap and VSync. If your FPS fluctuates sharply, try a cap below your monitor’s refresh ceiling and compare frame pacing. A cap can reduce visible swings when the PC can sustain it; it does not increase the machine’s rendering capacity. Test VSync separately, since its effect on presentation depends on your display and setup.
Adjust other settings one at a time
If the earlier changes are not enough, lower individual options such as texture quality, view distance, crowd quality or effects, then repeat the same test route. These settings can place different demands on the GPU, CPU and video memory, so the most useful change depends on what is limiting your particular system. Avoid dropping every option at once: isolated comparisons preserve image quality where your PC can handle it and reveal which adjustment matters.
Confirm the game is using the supported PC setup
Check that the game is running in DirectX 12 and, where possible, is installed on an SSD. The publisher lists DirectX 12 and 85 GB of storage in its PC specifications, while Portkey advises against DirectX 11 workarounds. The higher published hardware tiers specify an SSD; the minimum tier says one is preferred.

If stutter continues after compilation, test repeatably with the benchmark and a consistent route, then check whether lowering a costly option changes frame-time consistency. This narrows the problem without assuming that a particular setting or component is at fault.
