A 24/7 YouTube live stream can help new viewers discover a channel, but simply staying live does not guarantee subscribers. Make the stream’s purpose clear as soon as someone arrives, give people a reason to stay and interact, and use YouTube Studio metrics to see which changes are worth testing. YouTube’s published guidance explains discovery features and analytics; it does not promise that any particular tactic will increase subscriptions.
Make the stream easy to understand when someone arrives
A continuous broadcast needs a clear premise. A first-time viewer should be able to tell quickly what is playing, who the stream is for, and what they can do next. For a gaming channel, that might mean naming the game and mode, explaining whether the footage is a challenge run or a community playlist, and making chat participation part of the format when someone is available to respond.
Live streaming supports real-time interaction through video and chat. YouTube’s Aaron Filner described that interaction as a distinctive part of livestreaming: “When a creator calls out your handle or answers your question in the chat, that excitement is instantly shared with thousands around the world, creating a one-of-a-kind connection.” Treat interaction as a way to make the experience more welcoming, not as a guaranteed subscriber-growth mechanism.
Test vertical live if the stream works on phones
YouTube says vertical live feeds can be discovered in the Shorts feed; horizontal live streams are not listed as discoverable there. That makes vertical a reasonable discovery experiment when the gameplay and on-screen information remain legible on a phone. It is not evidence that vertical streams convert viewers into subscribers better.

Choose based on the game, layout and viewers you want to reach. A vertical crop can hide important HUD elements or text; a horizontal layout may be easier to follow for games that rely on wide scenes. YouTube’s feature comparison establishes differences in discovery and tools, not which format produces more subscribers.
Use YouTube metrics to guide one change at a time
Set a baseline before making a substantial change, then compare similar time windows and comparable content where possible. In Live Control Room, YouTube lists concurrent viewers, peak concurrent viewers, duration, likes, chat rate, views and average view duration. The post-stream snapshot includes views, new subscribers, total watch time, peak concurrent viewers, duration, average view duration and reactions.

Connect each metric to a question
- New subscribers and traffic sources: Are new people finding the stream, and are any subscribing? YouTube Analytics can report traffic sources and devices.
- Average view duration and audience retention: Where are viewers leaving, and do particular moments appear to hold attention? Studio video-level analytics include audience-retention key moments.
- Concurrent viewers: How many people are watching at once, and when do peaks occur? Live Control Room reports current and peak concurrent viewers; Studio video-level analytics also include average and peak concurrent viewers.
- Chat rate and reactions: Are viewers participating? Use these as engagement signals, not proof that interaction caused subscriptions.
- Hours streamed: At channel level, YouTube Analytics includes hours streamed alongside average and peak concurrent viewers.
Compare results after changing one meaningful element—such as the stream format, title or programming—rather than changing several things at once. These metrics are diagnostic signals, not causal proof: a higher chat rate or longer viewing session does not establish that a particular change drove a subscriber increase. YouTube also notes that Analytics data is processed and despammed, so it can differ from Live Control Room data. See YouTube’s live-stream metrics guide.
Keep the continuous stream operationally reliable
YouTube lists mobile, webcam, encoder and console as ways to stream. Its guidance does not say that dedicated encoder hardware is required for an always-on stream, nor that equipment increases subscribers. Choose a setup for the workflow you actually have; the viewer-facing premise and useful programming still need to be clear.

What YouTube’s audience figures mean for your channel
YouTube said that, on average, over 30% of daily logged-in YouTube viewers watched live content in Q2 2025. That is platform-wide context from Aaron Filner’s September 16, 2025 post, not a forecast for any individual channel or stream.
