Track total watch time alongside average view duration: more views do not necessarily mean longer viewing sessions.
What to measure before changing the stream
In YouTube Studio, open Analytics and select the Live content view. Record the same measures for each comparable period or stream:
- Impressions and click-through rate: whether the stream is being shown and whether its title and thumbnail attract clicks.
- Views: how many people arrived, not how long they stayed.
- Average view duration and audience retention: how long viewers watched and where viewing behavior changes.
- Watch time: total viewing time, the outcome you are trying to grow.
- Concurrent viewers: how many people are watching at a given time.
- Traffic sources and search terms: where viewers found the stream and, where available, what they searched.
YouTube’s live metrics guide describes stream analytics, while its Live content analytics tips explain how to interpret discovery and engagement measures. Studio Analytics data is processed and despammed and may differ from Live Control Room figures. Compare like with like rather than combining numbers from reports with different definitions.
Diagnose the viewer journey
Use the metrics in sequence to find the likely constraint. This applies YouTube’s appeal, engagement, and satisfaction framework; it does not guarantee recommendations or a watch-time increase.

Few impressions: investigate discovery
Review traffic sources and channel reach before changing the chant or stream format. Check whether viewers arrive through YouTube Search, suggested videos, playlists, browse, external links, or other available sources. Use the actual search terms in Studio to understand what people are looking for, then make the title and description accurately describe the shloka, language, and intended listening context.
Impressions but few clicks: clarify the packaging
Test a more specific title or thumbnail that helps the intended listener recognize what is playing. Identify the shloka and language accurately; do not promise a translation, pronunciation, or devotional interpretation unless the stream actually provides it. Change one major element at a time where practical, and compare similar periods.

Clicks but short sessions: inspect retention
Look at average view duration and retention patterns for signs that viewers leave soon after arriving or at a particular point. Check whether the stream’s opening experience, audio continuity, and visual presentation match what its title promises. Treat any change as a test: the available channel data, not a universal rule about Sanskrit devotional listening, should determine whether it helps.
Use your channel’s audience data to plan promotion
In Studio’s Audience reports, review when your viewers are on YouTube, their top geographies, device mix, subscriber status, and other channels or content they watch. YouTube explains these reports in Understand your YouTube audience.

A 24/7 stream is already available continuously, so timing insights are most useful for supporting programming and promotion: for example, a scheduled event, premiere, or promotional post when your audience is active. Use your own report rather than assuming one ideal time applies to every channel. Where the report does not establish a pattern, test a schedule and compare similar periods.
Test vertical live discovery against horizontal
YouTube’s live-streaming guide says vertical live streams can be discovered in the Shorts feed, while horizontal live streams are not. That makes vertical a possible discovery route to test, not a proven way to increase long viewing sessions.

Before changing formats, check whether the shloka imagery and any on-screen text remain legible in a vertical crop. Compare reach, watch time, and average view duration with the horizontal stream. YouTube says metrics for dual streams are combined in Live Control Room, while vertical-only metrics become available in Studio after 24 hours. Its feature comparison also notes differences such as link behavior and some live features, so verify the current Studio options before changing your workflow.

- Establish a baseline using comparable periods, noting impressions, click-through rate, views, watch time, average view duration, retention, traffic sources, and concurrent viewers.
- Choose the clearest diagnosed issue: discovery, click appeal, or session retention.
- Change one major element where practical, such as title clarity, thumbnail, promotional timing, or stream orientation.
- Record what changed and when, then compare similar periods using total watch time as the goal and the other measures as diagnostics.
- Keep or revise the change based on your channel’s results; do not attribute a difference confidently if several important things changed at once.
YouTube says its search and recommendation systems respond to relevance and viewer behavior, not a guaranteed keyword formula. Its performance FAQ puts it this way: “Our recommendation system doesn’t promote videos to your audience but rather finds videos for your audience when they visit YouTube.” Metadata can help describe a stream accurately, but no title, schedule, format, or single tactic guarantees recommendations.

Do not mistake a view-count change for more watch time
YouTube documents that, beginning August 24, 2026, a view across Shorts, long-form video, and live streams counts when playback starts. YouTube says that change does not affect Partner Program earnings or eligibility, which continue to rely on qualified watch hours and qualified Shorts views as applicable.
