You can recruit Mutt once the main quest Wedding Crashers begins, then head to his den west of the Nomads’ Camp. Pebbles is at the Semine stables, where you can try to persuade the horse trader or buy her. The steps below cover the short routes, the optional Mutt clues and what to know about Pebbles’ later comparison with Herring.
How to get Mutt
The Mutt side quest appears in your journal when Wedding Crashers starts. You can follow its investigation for context, but you do not need to finish every lead to reunite with Mutt, according to the KCD2.org Mutt guide, updated September 6, 2026.

Take the short route to Mutt’s den
- Start Wedding Crashers and check your journal for the Mutt quest.
- Travel to the Nomads’ Camp in Trosky. Follow the path west and southwest, past the archery area, then take the faint trail up into the rocks.
- Follow the cliff path down toward the den near Rocktower Pond. Reaching it triggers the reunion cutscene.
The route is described by the KCD2.org guide and the PowerPyx Mutt walkthrough (February 3, 2025). If the quest marker seems to stall, try going to the den rather than repeating optional conversations.
Follow the investigation first, if you want the quest context
The longer route starts at the marked scene northwest of Bozhena’s hut. Inspect the body and nearby deer, then ask the herbwoman, the Zhelejov innkeeper, the fisherman, Shepherd Siegfried and Gamekeeper Vostatek for leads. These conversations add investigation context, but the updated companion guide says they are not required to recruit Mutt.

Handle the wolves
Wolves are at the den. The walkthroughs report that you can fight them or flee and still complete the quest. If you are trying to preserve the Lent achievement, avoid killing animals with weapons; do not attack the wolves with a weapon for that purpose.
How to get Pebbles
Pebbles, a grey mare, is at the horse trader’s stables in Semine. The PowerPyx horse guide (February 3, 2025) describes two ways to get her: persuade the trader to give her to Henry or pay for her.

- Greet Pebbles, then speak with the trader and choose the dialogue option about her.
- Try the persuasion dialogue or pay the trader if that is the option you choose.
PowerPyx lists a 7 Speech check and a price of 150 Groschen. Those are guide-specific figures, not guaranteed requirements or prices for every save; dialogue outcomes can depend on reputation and game state.

Herring becomes available later through the main quest Back in the Saddle. The PowerPyx horse guide says Herring has better starting stats, while Pebbles can gain the Good Old Pebbles perk after 35 km of manual riding. Fast travel does not count toward that distance, according to the KCD2.org Pebbles guide, updated September 2, 2026. That perk threshold is a secondary guide’s account of the mechanic, not an official publisher statement.

The practical choice is between Herring’s stronger initial stats and keeping Pebbles, with her later perk path. Which matters more depends on your save and whether you value returning to Henry’s former horse.
