Press Alt + Enter to exit Steam Big Picture mode and return to the regular desktop client. Steam should remain open; this command leaves Big Picture mode rather than quitting Steam.
Exit Big Picture mode with the keyboard
With Steam Big Picture mode active, press Alt + Enter. Valve added this shortcut specifically for exiting Big Picture mode in a Steam client update released on February 10, 2023. See Valve’s client update notes.
If Steam responds normally, the Big Picture interface will close and the standard desktop Steam client will appear.

Exit through the Big Picture menu
If the keyboard shortcut does not work, use the visible menu route:

- Open Menu in the lower-left corner.
- Select Power.
- Select Exit Big Picture Mode.
This is Steam’s documented exit procedure. It returns you to the normal client without uninstalling Big Picture mode or closing Steam. The option is listed in Steam Support’s Big Picture instructions.
Exit Big Picture mode with a controller
You can use the same menu path without a mouse or keyboard:

- Open the Big Picture Menu.
- Choose Power.
- Choose Exit Big Picture Mode.
- Confirm the selection with your controller’s usual accept button if Steam displays a confirmation.
Button names vary between Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo, Steam Controller, and third-party devices. There is no single controller button that universally exits Big Picture mode, so the Power menu is the dependable method. Why F11 does not normally exit Big Picture mode
F11 is not the standard exit shortcut. Valve documents F11 as a toggle between windowed and fullscreen display while remaining in Big Picture mode. If F11 makes the Steam window smaller but still shows the Big Picture interface, press Alt + Enter or use Menu → Power → Exit Big Picture Mode.

Likewise, do not use Alt + F4 as the first solution. It may close Steam or trigger an application-level close action instead of simply returning to the desktop client.
What to do if Alt + Enter does nothing
- Click inside the Steam Big Picture window to give it keyboard focus.
- Hold Alt, press Enter, and release both keys.
- If nothing happens, use Menu → Power → Exit Big Picture Mode.
- If a game is running and the interface is not responding, close the active game if possible, then try the shortcut or Power menu again.
- Restart Steam only if Big Picture itself is frozen. This is a recovery step, not the normal way to exit.
Steam’s official documentation confirms the shortcut and menu route, but restarting or force-closing the client is only a fallback when the interface is unresponsive.

If Steam keeps opening in Big Picture mode
Exiting Big Picture mode once does not necessarily stop Steam from launching there again. Check Steam’s startup or interface preferences, then inspect any custom desktop shortcut, launcher, or script used to start Steam.
A custom launch configuration may include -gamepadui, a Valve-documented option for starting Steam directly in the newer Big Picture experience. Remove that argument from the shortcut or launcher if it is causing the behavior, unless you intentionally want Steam to start in gamepad mode. Valve’s client documentation also records that support for the older -oldbigpicture option was removed, so it should not be used as a current fix.

Know the difference between these commands
- Exit Big Picture Mode: Returns to Steam’s regular desktop client.
- Toggle fullscreen/windowed: Changes how Big Picture is displayed but leaves you in Big Picture mode.
- Quit Steam: Closes the Steam client completely.
- Turn off a controller: Powers down the controller but does not necessarily leave Big Picture mode.
The same Big Picture concept is available on supported Steam installations for Windows, macOS, and Linux, although exact support depends on Steam’s current requirements and the operating system version.
