How to Get Rid of a Housecarl in Skyrim

Follower dialogue stops a housecarl from accompanying you, but a Hearthfire steward’s assignment works differently. Here are the vanilla, PC, and modded options.

If your housecarl is following you, talk to them and choose the dialogue option to part ways. That stops them accompanying you; it does not permanently remove the character or necessarily end their housecarl or home assignment. If you mean a Hearthfire steward, the options are different and more limited.

First, identify what you want to get rid of

In Skyrim, “housecarl” can mean a companion who is currently following you, a resident assigned to a player home, or a steward appointed to a Hearthfire homestead. The right solution depends on which role is causing the problem.

  • Stop following you: use the ordinary follower dialogue.
  • Change a Hearthfire steward: use the steward reassignment route or, on PC, a documented console workaround.
  • Permanently fire a housecarl: a Skyrim Special Edition mod offers that option for eligible characters.

Dismiss a housecarl who is following you

  1. Speak to the housecarl while they are accompanying you.
  2. Choose the follower dialogue option to part ways, commonly displayed as “It’s time for us to part ways.”

This ends their active follower service. Dismissed followers return to their normal lives and may be asked to follow you again. It does not necessarily remove them from their home or cancel their housecarl assignment. A follower left waiting may leave after three in-game days.

If you mean a Hearthfire steward

A steward is a separate homestead appointment, not simply a follower who happens to be a housecarl. According to the community steward reference, vanilla Skyrim does not ordinarily let you dismiss an appointed steward unless they die.

Move the steward to another homestead

The documented reassignment route is to recruit the steward as a follower, take them to another eligible homestead, and appoint them there. The reference warns that the original homestead then cannot hire a different steward, so this is not a simple swap that frees the first home for a replacement.

Use console commands on PC

The steward reference documents commands for clearing the assignment at each of the three Hearthfire properties. This is an advanced PC-only workaround that changes your save’s game state; the appropriate NPC reference ID and command sequence depend on the steward and homestead. Check the instructions for your specific case in the UESP Skyrim steward reference before entering anything. These commands are not available through ordinary follower dialogue or on console versions.

Use a mod for permanent firing dialogue

For Skyrim Special Edition, Fire the Housecarls adds dialogue to permanently fire an eligible player housecarl. The mod page says to dismiss the character as an active follower first; the new option appears afterward. This is a modded solution, so check the current page for requirements, compatibility, and installation details.

Don’t kill a housecarl just to stop the following

For an ordinary follower, dismissal is the standard reversible option; killing is unnecessary. Death is described as the vanilla exception to ordinary steward dismissal, but it permanently harms the character and story state and is not a sensible default fix.
