If teammates hear your keyboard, fan, TV, or room through your gaming headset, start by moving the microphone close to the corner of your mouth and lowering its input level. Then select the correct microphone and test one noise-suppression option at a time. If you hear the noise yourself, or it sounds like static, buzzing, or echo, you need a different fix: microphone suppression will not solve every headset problem.
First, identify what kind of noise you mean
Is the noise going to other players through your microphone, or are you hearing it in your own headset? The distinction matters: microphone noise suppression cleans up transmitted voice; active noise cancellation (ANC) reduces sound reaching the wearer’s ears. A headset can have one without the other.

Try these fixes before installing software
- Position the microphone correctly. Put the boom about 2–5 cm from the corner of your mouth, slightly to the side rather than directly in front. Keep it away from direct breath, a fan, and laptop exhaust. A closer mic lets you speak clearly at lower gain, so it picks up less of the room.
- Lower microphone input volume or gain. Reduce it a little, then test at normal speaking volume. Too much reduction makes speech hard to hear; too little can make room noise prominent.
- Use headphones instead of speakers. Game or TV audio from speakers can leak back into the microphone. Closed-back earcups may help isolate sound for you, but they do not repair a noisy microphone.
- Reseat the microphone and cable. If the boom detaches, reconnect it firmly. Check the cable and jack for looseness or visible damage, and try the headset’s mute switch.
- Use the included windscreen and mute when not speaking. A foam cover can help with breath noise. Push to Talk can prevent unwanted room sound from being sent between calls, though it requires holding a key or controller button.
- Make a short test recording. Record at your normal gaming position, change one setting, and record again. This makes it easier to tell whether the change actually helped.
Fix the microphone in Windows 11 or Windows 10
On Windows 11, open Start → Settings → Privacy & security → Microphone. Turn on Microphone access, Let apps access your microphone, and Let desktop apps access your microphone as needed. Then open Settings → System → Sound and select the actual headset microphone under Input. Use its microphone test and lower Input volume if the room is too prominent.

If Windows cannot detect the mic, do not try to fix it with a noise filter yet. Reconnect the headset, try a different USB port or cable, restart the PC, and check that the microphone is permitted. If it still is not detected, use the Windows sound troubleshooter and inspect the audio device in Device Manager; Microsoft recommends checking or reinstalling the device when detection fails.
Configure Discord without over-processing your voice
- Open User Settings → Voice & Video and choose the headset microphone under Input Device.
- Run Discord’s microphone test while speaking normally with the mic in its final position.
- Try Noise Suppression for keyboard, fan, or room noise. Discord identifies its suppression technology as Krisp and says it supports Windows, Linux, macOS, Android, and iOS; see its Krisp FAQ.
- If your voice becomes robotic, clipped, hollow, or too quiet, turn suppression off or remove another active filter. Avoid stacking filters before comparing the sound.
- Check Input Sensitivity. Automatic sensitivity is easy to use; manual sensitivity can keep quiet room noise from opening the mic, but a threshold set too high can cut off quiet speech.
- Consider Push to Talk if you want to keep non-speech sounds out of chat. Voice Activity is more convenient but depends on good mic placement and a suitable threshold.
Discord’s voice and video troubleshooting guide also recommends checking the selected input, using Mic Test, and trying another USB port when needed. Confirm the microphone in both Windows and Discord: selecting a device in one does not guarantee the other is using it.
PC noise filters: use one at a time
Noise suppression can reduce fans and keyboard sounds, but aggressive filtering may distort speech, add delay, or cut off quiet words. A noise gate is different: it closes the mic when sound falls below a threshold, so it can silence noise between sentences but cannot remove noise that overlaps your voice.

Compare each recording and keep the option that sounds clearest. Discord suppression, NVIDIA Broadcast, SteelSeries Sonar, OBS filters, and a headset’s own processing can conflict when used together. NVIDIA’s Broadcast setup guide specifically recommends disabling Discord noise cancellation when using Broadcast.

NVIDIA Broadcast
On a compatible PC, NVIDIA Broadcast can apply microphone noise and room-echo removal and provide a virtual input called Microphone (NVIDIA Broadcast). Select your physical headset mic as Broadcast’s source, enable Noise Removal, and add room-echo removal only if you actually have echo. Then select the Broadcast microphone in Windows or the chat/game app. Leave your usual headset as the output device unless you have a reason to route audio differently.
Turn off Discord’s separate suppression while testing Broadcast. NVIDIA says effects use GPU resources and recommends enabling only the ones needed; its guide also notes that installation requires about 3 GB of additional storage. Check NVIDIA’s current compatibility requirements before installing: this is a PC solution for supported hardware, not a general-purpose console filter. If routing breaks, switch the app back to the physical headset microphone.
SteelSeries Sonar
SteelSeries Sonar, included in SteelSeries GG, offers microphone controls such as ClearCast AI noise cancellation and noise reduction. Its processing must remain active in GG to work. Select the physical headset mic as Sonar’s source, configure the processing, and choose SteelSeries Sonar – Microphone as the input in Discord. Check Sonar’s output routing as well so the relevant Gaming or Chat channel reaches your headset.

If a virtual microphone stops working, verify GG is running and select the physical mic temporarily to return to the unprocessed signal.

PlayStation and Xbox
PS5
Start with the headset’s position and mute control, then adjust the microphone level at Settings → Devices → Audio Devices → Adjust Microphone Level. Keep the level only as high as needed for clear speech, and test in party chat before changing other settings. PlayStation’s wireless-headset troubleshooting guide includes this control and lists nearby USB 3.0 devices as a possible consideration when troubleshooting wireless-headset issues. If you have dropouts or interference, try moving such devices away from the headset receiver.
PC apps such as NVIDIA Broadcast and Sonar generally cannot process a headset mic connected directly to a console. For a noisy room, prioritize placement, the headset’s own mic controls, and a boom microphone with noise rejection. Product descriptions are manufacturer claims, not independent comparisons: for example, PlayStation describes the PULSE Elite as having AI-enhanced microphone noise rejection and the PULSE 3D as using dual microphones with noise-cancelling technology. Neither description means ANC for listening and microphone noise rejection are interchangeable.
Xbox
Confirm the headset is connected, unmuted, and selected, then adjust the mic level if the headset, controller, or console offers that control. Test the headset in Xbox party chat and in-game chat separately. If the noise persists, try another controller, adapter, or headset to isolate the fault. Xbox settings and available processing depend on the specific headset, controller, game, and console configuration, so do not assume Windows or Discord controls are available in the same way.
If you replace a headset, check platform compatibility and the connection type. For example, HyperX lists its CloudX as an Xbox-licensed wired headset with a detachable noise-cancelling microphone for Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S controllers with a 3.5 mm headset jack. That is a manufacturer feature claim, not a guarantee that it will remove every sound in every room.

What to do about buzzing, crackling, and echo
Low hum or electrical buzz
Noise suppression is not the right first fix for electrical interference. Try another USB port, avoid an unpowered USB hub, reseat or replace the cable, and disconnect nearby chargers or questionable USB devices one at a time. For a 3.5 mm headset, test another controller or audio jack. Then test the headset on another device. If the hum follows the headset across devices, its cable or hardware may be at fault; if it stays with one port or controller, investigate that connection.
Crackling or popping
Check for a loose plug, damaged cable, or unstable USB connection. If the headset is wireless, test closer to its receiver and temporarily move other devices away. Update headset software or firmware using the manufacturer’s official app, if applicable. Compare wired and wireless modes if the headset supports both.
Echo or feedback
Use headphones rather than speakers so audio does not feed back into the microphone. If you hear your own voice, lower or disable sidetone or microphone monitoring. Check whether an operating-system setting such as “Listen to this device” is enabled. Also make sure the app is not receiving both the raw mic and a virtual processed version, and check for duplicate voice routing between the game and chat app.
When changing the headset makes sense
Try positioning, gain, and connection checks first; a new headset is not automatically the cheapest or most effective fix. Consider replacing the headset, mic, or cable if the mic stays noisy on multiple devices, the connection is damaged, or the capsule cannot pick up your voice clearly without excessive gain. For console players with a poor built-in mic, a dedicated boom mic with directional pickup and a physical mute can be a practical upgrade.
When comparing headsets, check for a boom microphone, directional pickup or stated mic noise rejection, a usable mute control, and compatibility with your exact console or PC connection. Detachable or retractable mics are convenient, but do not guarantee better noise rejection. Closed-back earcups help reduce what you hear and can limit game audio leaking into the mic; ANC is for the wearer’s listening experience unless the manufacturer separately specifies microphone processing. A 3.5 mm headset, USB headset, and wireless headset can have different compatibility and interference trade-offs, so confirm the connection works with your controller or console before buying.
If the noise only happens in one game, check that game’s voice-chat input and threshold. If it happens in every app, return to Windows, the headset, cable, or room. On console, compare party chat with in-game chat and, if possible, another controller or headset. These comparisons help pinpoint whether the cause is software, the connection, the hardware, or the environment.
