To get started with Streamlabs Desktop, install it from Streamlabs, complete first-run setup, build a scene with the sources you need, check audio and video settings, then test before choosing Go Live or Record. Start with modest output settings your computer and connection can handle; there is no single preset that suits every game or setup.
Check compatibility and install Streamlabs Desktop
Streamlabs’ setup documents give conflicting operating-system guidance, so check the current download and support information for your computer before installing. The newer quick-start guide, dated May 20, 2026, lists Windows 11 or macOS 12 as minimums and recommends Windows 11 or macOS 13 or later. A separate System Requirements article, dated April 25, 2025, instead lists Windows 10 or macOS 12+ as minimums and recommends Windows 10 or macOS 10.15+. Because the two official pages disagree, do not assume that the older recommendation overrides the newer guide or vice versa.
The May 2026 quick-start lists 8 GB RAM and 10 GB storage as minimums; it recommends 16 GB or more RAM and a 512 GB SSD or larger. Its recommended processor guidance is Intel Core i5 11th or 12th generation, or AMD Ryzen 5 5600X and higher. It lists integrated graphics as a minimum and Nvidia RTX 20/30 series or AMD RX 5000/6000 series as recommended. These are Streamlabs’ published guidelines, not a guarantee of performance for every game, scene, or output setting.
- Open the official Streamlabs Desktop download page and download the installer for your operating system. The quick-start guide says the site supplies the appropriate version and the installer adds missing background files, such as Windows Redistributables.
- Run the installer and follow its prompts. If the download page or installer indicates your operating system is unsupported, verify compatibility before trying workarounds.
- Launch Streamlabs Desktop once installation finishes.
Complete first-run setup
- Allow camera and microphone access if you want to use those devices. You can add or change sources later.
- Choose whether you intend to stream live or record locally. Select the skill-level or intended-use options shown in your version of the app.
- Sign in with a Streamlabs ID or the account for your streaming platform when prompted. If you already use OBS Studio, the onboarding flow offers an option to import existing settings; otherwise, choose Start Fresh.
- Select the camera and microphone you want Streamlabs to use, if available.
- Choose an overlay if you want one, or skip it and start with a simple scene. The onboarding flow may offer Free and Ultra choices; check the current in-app plan details because labels and entitlements can change.
Create a scene and add sources
A scene is a layout; sources are the individual things placed in it, such as game footage, a desktop or app window, a webcam, and widgets. Keep the first scene simple, then add elements only when you know you need them.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- In the Scenes panel, click the plus button, name the scene (for example, “Gameplay”), and create it.
- In the Sources panel, click the plus button and choose the type of content to capture. Choose Game Capture for a game, Display Capture for the whole desktop, or Window Capture for one application. Where available, Screen Capture is the unified option described in Streamlabs’ July 2026 guide.
- Add a Video Capture Device if you want a webcam. A built-in camera can work; buying an external camera is not a setup requirement.
- Add optional items such as Alert Box or Chat Box only if you want them visible in the scene.
- Arrange the sources in the list. Items higher in the stack appear in front of items below; move the webcam above gameplay if you want it displayed as an overlay.
- Check the preview for framing and visibility. Close private windows and hide sensitive desktop content before using desktop or window capture.
Set up your microphone and desktop audio
- Open the Audio Mixer settings using its gear icon.
- Choose your microphone under Mic/Auxiliary Device. Speak and confirm that its meter moves. A built-in microphone or a device you already own may be sufficient.
- On Windows, set Desktop Audio to the default playback device shown in Windows Sound Settings, then play something and check that its meter responds.
- On macOS, Streamlabs’ quick-start says capturing desktop audio requires audio-routing software configured as a Mic/Aux source. BlackHole is one free example named in the guide; follow its current setup instructions if you choose it.
- Listen for unwanted feedback or doubled audio. If a meter does not respond, check that the correct device is selected and that the operating system has granted microphone access.
Choose video and output settings
Open Settings > Video. The right balance depends on the game, desired detail and motion smoothness, hardware, and upload capacity. Begin with settings your computer can sustain, then adjust after a test.
- Base (Canvas) Resolution: Use your monitor’s resolution as the canvas size.
- Output (Scaled) Resolution: Choose the resolution viewers should receive. It should be equal to or lower than the base resolution.
- Frame rate: Streamlabs gives 30 FPS for slower card games and 60 FPS for fast action games as examples. Higher frame rates can make motion smoother but require more processing and bitrate.
- Encoder: Software encoding such as x264 uses the CPU; hardware encoding such as NVENC uses a supported Nvidia GPU. Streamlabs’ longer getting-started guide recommends NVENC New for Nvidia graphics cards. Choose an available encoder your computer can handle.
- Bitrate and upload: Streamlabs’ 2025 requirements article gives 3.6 Mbps or better for 720p at 30 FPS for most platforms. This is a general guideline, not a universal platform limit or a guarantee; check the current bitrate and upload recommendations for the platform you will use.
If the stream stutters, the game slows down, or the output looks unstable, lower the output resolution or frame rate, or choose a less demanding encoder setting before increasing complexity. Settings that exceed the computer’s capacity can cause performance problems.

Test, then go live or record
- Check the scene preview for the intended capture, camera placement, and source order.
- Speak into the microphone and play desktop audio if needed; confirm the appropriate Audio Mixer meters move.
- Test alerts and other widgets you have added. Do not assume they are configured just because they appear in the source list.
- To stream, click Go Live, select the platform, enter the stream metadata requested, and confirm. Check the platform’s current live-streaming, copyright, and content rules before broadcasting; software setup does not grant rights to music, game footage, or other material.
- To record locally, open Settings > Output and set the save location, then click Record. Click it again to stop.
Troubleshoot common setup problems
Installer or features behave unexpectedly on Windows
Streamlabs’ July 9, 2026 troubleshooting article advises installing both the 32-bit and 64-bit Microsoft Visual C++ 2017 Redistributables and rebooting, even on a 64-bit Windows system. It also recommends updating graphics drivers and Windows, checking firewall permissions, and allowing Streamlabs through antivirus software where applicable. These are troubleshooting steps, not required onboarding steps for every user.
The scene is blank or the wrong content appears
- Confirm that the correct scene is selected and that its capture source is enabled.
- Use Game Capture for a game, Display Capture for a whole display, or Window Capture for one app; where available, try Screen Capture if the other method does not suit your setup.
- Check that the captured window is open and that the source is not hidden behind another source.
The microphone or desktop audio meter is silent
- Reopen the Audio Mixer settings and verify the selected Mic/Auxiliary Device or Desktop Audio device.
- On Windows, match Desktop Audio to the playback device selected in Windows Sound Settings.
- On macOS, configure audio-routing software as a Mic/Aux source if you need desktop audio.
- Check operating-system privacy permissions for microphone access.
The stream or recording struggles under load
In Settings > Video, confirm that Base (Canvas) uses the monitor’s native resolution and that Output (Scaled) is not higher than the base. Reduce output resolution or frame rate if the computer cannot sustain the current settings. Check the platform’s current bitrate guidance against your available upload capacity.
