You can explore Runeterra before Riot’s MMO, but you do not need to complete a game, read a book, or watch a series first. Riot describes the MMO as in progress, and its official pages do not give a release date or set out any required preparation. Treat the universe as something to explore at your own pace—not homework.
Start with one character or place
The easiest entry point is Riot’s official lore index, which brings together champion stories and comics from Runeterra. Pick a character or region that catches your interest and follow that thread; you do not need to learn the whole setting before you begin.
Reading is entirely optional. The point is to find a corner of the world that makes you curious, not to complete a checklist.
Choose a game by the way you like to play
Riot’s games offer different formats, rather than steps in a required course. Its games overview lists League of Legends, Teamfight Tactics, Wild Rift, and Legends of Runeterra among its games associated with Runeterra.

Consider a standalone story game
Riot Forge’s explainer describes its aim as offering “bespoke, completable game experiences” that connect players with Runeterra’s champions and places through stories and design. That makes story-led games a possible route if you prefer a bounded experience over an ongoing multiplayer game. Read a novel only if you want a longer story
Riot’s lore index references Ruination: A League of Legends Novel, giving readers who enjoy physical or long-form fiction another optional route. The reference does not make the book required MMO preparation, and current editions and regional availability are not established here. Riot’s lore index

Marc Merrill’s Riot leadership profile calls it “Riot’s in-progress MMO set in the world of Runeterra.” That supports describing the project as in progress, but does not establish its launch date, mechanics, platforms, or what players will need to know. Marc Merrill’s profile
Neither page says that playing League, reading Ruination, or completing a particular game is required—or that doing so will give you an advantage. The official information cited here identifies the setting, not a preparation syllabus or specific continuity details beyond that connection.

- Open Riot’s lore index and choose one champion story or comic that interests you.
- Pick a game format that suits you: multiplayer, mobile, cards and PvE, or a bounded story game.
- If you enjoy reading, consider the Ruination novel as a separate story option.
- Check current game and book availability before deciding what to play or buy.
