The Xbox dashboard is delivered through the console’s system software, not as a separate download. On Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, open Profile & system > Settings > System > Updates & downloads and select Update console when it appears. If no update is offered, the redesigned dashboard or feature may still be staged, region-limited, model-specific, or available only through Xbox Insider Preview.
Check for the newest Xbox dashboard
- Connect the console to the internet.
- Press the Xbox button on the controller.
- Open Profile & system > Settings.
- Select System > Updates & downloads.
- Choose Update console if that option is available.
The console may restart while it installs the system update. Do not turn it off during installation. If the screen shows No console update available or the equivalent disabled status, Microsoft’s support guidance indicates that the console is current for the production update currently offered to it: Xbox system-update instructions.
A manual check cannot force an update that Microsoft has not yet offered to your console. A dashboard announcement, screenshot, or video may describe a staged rollout, an Insider build, or a feature limited to a particular account, region, language, console model, or preview ring.
Turn on automatic Xbox updates
- Open Profile & system > Settings.
- Go to General > Power mode & startup.
- Choose a standby-style power mode that permits background updates, where that option is available.
- Return to System > Updates & downloads.
- Enable Keep my console up to date.
Microsoft has changed power-mode terminology over time. Older software may say Instant-on; newer builds may use Standby or Shutdown (energy saving). Use the label shown on your console. Automatic installation also depends on the console being connected and update settings being enabled. The documented controls are listed in Microsoft’s Xbox update guide.

Check which system version is installed
- Press the Xbox button.
- Select Profile & system > Settings > System > Console info.
- Record the OS version and build information.
Use that information when comparing Microsoft’s dated release notes or contacting support. The console’s update area may also show recent update status. The official path is documented here: Microsoft Xbox system updates. Do not rely on an undated web post for the “latest” public build; production versions change, and the available official material does not establish one universal public build for every Xbox, region, and date.
Get dashboard features early with Xbox Insider
For unreleased console software, install or open Xbox Insider Hub, accept the program terms if prompted, open Xbox Update Preview, and enroll the console in an available ring. Microsoft’s enrollment background is available for Series X|S at Xbox Wire; Xbox One enrollment information is also documented at Xbox Wire.

Preview access is not one universal switch:

These ring descriptions come from Microsoft’s Xbox Update Preview overview. Preview builds can contain bugs, incomplete features, or changes that require troubleshooting. An announcement may apply only to Alpha, while your console is in Omega, or a feature may be enabled for only some participants. Leaving Insider does not necessarily downgrade the console immediately to the public build.

- Staged rollout: Microsoft may enable the feature gradually, so two otherwise similar consoles receive it at different times.
- Region or account differences: Geography, account status, language, and service configuration can affect availability.
- Preview-ring mismatch: The announcement may target Alpha or another ring that your console is not using.
- Console-model limits: A change may target Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, or both; do not infer compatibility from a screenshot.
- App-versus-console confusion: An Xbox app update on Windows or mobile does not update the console dashboard.
- Offline or unstable networking: The console cannot use the normal online update process without a working connection.
Work through this order:
- Verify the network connection.
- Restart the console.
- Recheck System > Updates & downloads.
- Record the OS version under System > Console info.
- Compare the result with the relevant official Xbox system-update or Insider release notes.

What to do when an update will not install
Normal update failure
- Confirm that the internet connection is stable.
- Check that the console has sufficient free storage.
- Restart the console and try the update again.
- Write down the exact error code and message.
- Use official Xbox troubleshooting rather than an unofficial “dashboard update” file.
Console stuck during startup or updating
Recovery steps depend on the Xbox model and error. Use Xbox Support’s official system-update troubleshooting and offline-update documentation. An offline system update is a recovery method for specific failures, not a normal way to obtain a dashboard early. Do not download system files from third-party mirrors or follow unverified social-media instructions. Before choosing any reset option, read its data consequences and make sure you understand what may be removed.

Both console families receive dashboard changes as system software and use the same general guide navigation. Xbox One’s documented path is Profile & system > Settings > System > Updates & downloads; Series X|S uses the same concept and similar labels. Microsoft can change wording between dashboard builds, languages, and generations, so follow the visible Updates & downloads section rather than assuming every screen is identical. Feature support still depends on the specific Xbox announcement or release note.

Console dashboard or Xbox app?
Identify the device first. Updating the Xbox app on Windows or mobile changes that app, not the operating system on an Xbox console. Xbox Insider may offer separate previews for consoles, PC, games, and apps; enrolling in one does not automatically enroll the others.

Choose the right update method
