Grow a social media presence by building relationships with people who care about the same audience or subject—not by sending connection requests in bulk. Choose a platform that fits your goal, contribute useful ideas to existing conversations, publish helpful content at a sustainable pace, and follow up with people you meet. That creates a repeatable way to turn social contacts into real connections without promising a particular follower count or timetable.
What networking on social media actually means
Networking is more than collecting follows or connection requests. It includes finding relevant people and communities, listening to what they discuss, contributing something useful, responding thoughtfully, and maintaining contact over time. The goal is a genuine exchange: people understand what you offer, and you understand what matters to them.
That approach can feel daunting. In LinkedIn’s July 2026 research, 72% of surveyed Gen Z respondents said they felt disconnected from people who could help their careers. In the same research, 37% worried about bothering people, 37% feared being judged, and 34% worried about sounding inauthentic when building professional relationships. Those figures describe professional networking concerns among the research’s respondents; they are not a forecast for every creator or platform.
Start with a specific audience and a useful reason to participate. For a video-game creator, that might mean joining conversations among players of a particular genre, indie developers, esports fans, modders, or gaming-community organizers. A narrower, clearer focus makes it easier to find people whose interests overlap with yours.

Choose platforms by audience and purpose
There is no established universal best platform for growth. Choose based on where the people you want to reach already spend time and the kinds of interaction your work supports. The platform guidance below describes different uses, not a controlled head-to-head ranking.

For B2B work, creator content may be relevant: LinkedIn Ads reported in 2025 that 59% of B2B buyers said they consume creator content on LinkedIn, citing its ebook Working with B2B Creators: Collaborate with Confidence. That is a LinkedIn-reported figure in a B2B context, not a measure of what every audience watches.

A repeatable networking routine
1. Define whom you want to reach
Write down the audience you serve, what they want help with, and who they already trust. Be specific enough to guide your choices: “players looking for accessible strategy guides for turn-based games” is more actionable than “gamers.” Include adjacent creators, professionals, communities, and potential collaborators who speak to that audience.

A person who encounters your comment or post should be able to tell who you are, what you make, and why following or replying might be useful. Use a recognizable name or creator identity, a concise description, and examples of your work. Keep the profile consistent with the audience and subject you intend to serve.
3. Follow and observe before pitching
Follow relevant people and communities, then spend time understanding their conversations. Notice recurring questions, the formats people respond to, and the norms of each space. LinkedIn recommends following people before connecting; observation also helps you make a more relevant contribution than a generic introduction or pitch.

4. Contribute to conversations with substance
Leave a thoughtful comment, answer a question you can genuinely help with, share a concise example, or ask a useful follow-up. Refer to the specific point you are responding to. Avoid empty praise, repeated copy-and-paste replies, mass tagging, and turning every interaction into a sales pitch.
LinkedIn reported in 2026 that members were almost three times as likely to receive connection requests if they had interacted with posts from their network. This is LinkedIn’s reported association, not evidence that commenting guarantees requests or audience growth.

5. Publish useful content at a sustainable pace
Networking works best alongside something useful for people to find when they visit your profile. Share a practical lesson, a clear opinion supported by an example, an answer to a recurring question, or a behind-the-scenes explanation that serves your audience. Adapt the format to the platform: written expertise, visual posts, short-form video, or a combination if it suits your time and audience.

Research summarized by the American Marketing Association examined 14,311,145 Instagram posts by 6,079 influencers in 57 countries over more than two years. Its summary reports an association between posting more frequently and faster growth, but also diminishing returns from volume alone; variation in formats and relationship-oriented strategies mattered in the reported analysis. This observational result concerns Instagram influencers and does not establish a universal posting schedule or guarantee a causal result for an individual account.
6. Collaborate when the audience benefit is real
Consider a joint post, interview, co-created video, or shared discussion when you and another creator have a genuine overlap in audience or complementary expertise. Before making anything, agree on who it is for, what viewers or readers will gain, each person’s role, and the format. A collaboration should make sense to both communities even if it brings neither creator an immediate follower increase.
TikTok for Business reported that, in its historical EU5 advertising analysis covering October 2020 to May 2021, ads created for TikTok with a creator partnership had 65% higher two-second view rates, 91% higher six-second view rates, and 83% higher engagement rates than the comparison described in its 2022 article. These are platform-reported advertising results, not proof that organic creator collaborations produce follower growth.

7. Follow up and keep track
After a useful conversation or collaboration, follow up with a specific thank-you, answer, or resource you promised. Keep a simple record of the person, the topic you discussed, and any next step. A lightweight note is enough; the point is to continue relevant conversations rather than repeatedly restarting them with strangers.

Follower count can show audience size, but it does not by itself show whether networking is helping you reach the right people. Review platform analytics alongside signs of meaningful interaction, and compare them over time rather than treating one post as a verdict.
- Relevant replies and conversations from the audience you want to serve.
- Saves or shares on posts intended to be useful.
- Profile visits that lead to follows, inquiries, or further discussion.
- Returning participants who recognize your work and engage again.
- Qualified connections, introductions, or collaboration opportunities that fit your goals.
Choose measures that match your purpose. A professional account seeking industry relationships may care more about relevant conversations and introductions; a creator building a community may look more closely at returning participants and saves. No single metric set is established as right for every account.
Common mistakes that make networking less effective
- Trying to be equally active everywhere: Split attention can make it harder to participate consistently. Prioritize the platforms that fit your audience and purpose.
- Pitching before there is context: A cold request with no specific connection can feel transactional. Follow and observe, then reach out with a clear reason.
- Posting for volume alone: More posts are not a substitute for useful content or interaction. Choose a cadence you can sustain and vary formats when it helps serve the audience.
- Using follower count as the only success measure: A larger number does not establish that the people reached are relevant or engaged.
- Buying gear as a growth strategy: A smartphone tripod or wireless microphone may help produce video, but buying equipment itself is not evidence of audience growth.
