If YouTube flags or removes your always-on livestream, first identify whether the notice is a Content ID claim, a scheduled copyright removal request, or a completed removal with a strike. The remedy and deadline depend on that status. A scheduled removal gives you a seven-day window to act; removal of an active live stream can bring a strike and a seven-day live-streaming restriction. Do not file a counter notification unless you can truthfully support its required legal statements.
Identify what YouTube has done before responding
Read the copyright email and check the affected item in YouTube Studio. Under Content, use the Copyright filter and open the copyright details. Confirm the exact status shown: a Content ID claim, a scheduled copyright removal request, or a completed removal with an active strike. These are not interchangeable. A Content ID claim typically does not itself create a strike, but an appeal of a claim can lead to a removal request.
| Status | What it means | What to check next |
|---|---|---|
| Content ID claim | A claim, not by itself a copyright strike. | Check the claim details and any appeal status; an appeal can lead to a removal request. |
| Scheduled copyright removal request | YouTube says removal is pending and gives the uploader seven days to take specified action before removal and a strike. | Read the notice for the deadline and available options. |
| Completed removal and active strike | The content has been removed and the channel has a strike. | Review strike details and the available resolution routes; deleting the content now does not clear the strike. |
YouTube reported that it received copyright removal requests for over 16 million videos in 2022. That figure covers videos generally, not livestreams alone, and does not show how many requests were accurate. YouTube’s explanation of copyright removal requests distinguishes a removal request from a Content ID claim.
Preserve the record before changing the 24/7 feed
Keep a copy of the notice and record the stream URL or video ID, the time of any identified material, the claimant, the work named in the request, the stream’s current status, and whether an archive or VOD exists. Save licenses, permissions, relevant correspondence, and other records that support your position. YouTube recommends documenting communications and evidence.

For a continuous broadcast, find out whether YouTube identified a particular segment or a continuing source. YouTube’s public guidance does not specify a special procedure for editing a continuous stream or its archive while a scheduled request is pending. Do not assume that changing the feed alone prevents a strike; follow the options in the notice and preserve relevant records.
If removal is scheduled, use the seven-day window
YouTube says a scheduled copyright removal request gives the uploader seven days before removal and a strike. During that period, deleting the scheduled content or obtaining a retraction can avoid the strike. If the request followed a rejected Content ID appeal, canceling that appeal is another possible option. Confirm which choices apply in the actual notice and Studio status.
Deleting content after an effective removal does not resolve an existing strike. If stopping or editing a 24/7 feed is under consideration, weigh that decision against the need to preserve evidence and rely on the specific options YouTube displays rather than an assumed livestream-specific process.

If YouTube removed the active stream, check the strike and live access
YouTube says removing an active live stream for copyright gives the channel a copyright strike and restricts live-streaming access for seven days. If the channel gets another strike, the live-stream restriction lasts 14 days. YouTube’s general strike guidance says a strike can expire after 90 days if Copyright School is completed, subject to the channel having fewer than three strikes. Retraction and a valid counter notification are other potential resolution routes.
Three active copyright strikes in 90 days can result in termination of the account and associated channels. A takedown is not itself proof that the poster has been sued: the U.S. Copyright Office says a takedown notice does not mean a lawsuit has been filed. A counter notification may, however, be followed by court action.
Choose between asking for retraction and counter notification
Ask the claimant to retract the request
A retraction asks the claimant to withdraw the removal request and is one route YouTube identifies for resolving a strike. Keep any communication factual and retain a copy. Do not threaten the claimant or make legal claims you cannot support. YouTube says it cannot determine ownership or mediate on behalf of content owners.

Submit a counter notification only for a genuine mistake or misidentification
A counter notification is a legal request to reinstate content removed because of a copyright removal request. YouTube says to submit one only if the removal resulted from a mistake, including possible misidentification or a copyright exception. It is not simply a request for leniency.
YouTube requires legal identity and contact details, including a full legal name and physical address in the Studio process, and says it shares the counter notification with the claimant. The U.S. Copyright Office describes the DMCA section 512 counter-notice requirements as including a signature; identification of the removed material and where it appeared; a sworn, good-faith statement that removal resulted from mistake or misidentification; name, address, and telephone number; consent to the relevant federal court jurisdiction; and agreement to accept service of process. A materially false assertion can have legal consequences.

- In YouTube Studio, find the removed video under Content and the Copyright filter, then open its copyright details and select the counter-notification option.
- Provide the requested contact information and a concise explanation, review and accept the legal statements, and sign with your full legal name.
- If submitting by email, fax, or mail instead, follow YouTube’s current instructions for the required statements, direct content links, contact information, and signature. Interface details can change, so use the directions shown by YouTube.
An authorized representative, such as an attorney, may submit on the uploader’s behalf through the routes YouTube specifies. Consider legal advice if you are unsure about the ownership, license, exception, or litigation implications—or uncomfortable providing the required personal information.

What happens after a counter notification
YouTube says that after it forwards a valid counter notification, the claimant has 10 U.S. business days to provide evidence of legal action taken to keep the content from being reinstated. YouTube says it will reinstate the content if the claimant does not do so within that period, unless the content has been deleted.
The Copyright Office describes the section 512 framework as restoration no fewer than 10 and no more than 14 business days after a compliant counter-notice, unless the original notice sender informs the service provider that a court action has been filed. These are attributed process descriptions, not a guaranteed restoration date for an individual YouTube channel; allow for platform handling and follow the notices you receive.
If the right response is unclear
- Keep the notice, stream identifiers, relevant footage or archive details, permissions, and claimant communications together.
- Review the resolution choices YouTube lists for the strike, including retraction, waiting for possible expiry under YouTube’s conditions, and counter notification where the legal basis is truthful and supportable.
- Seek advice from a qualified copyright attorney when the facts or legal consequences are uncertain, particularly for disputed licenses, ownership, copyright exceptions, or potential litigation.
The U.S. DMCA process described here is not a substitute for advice about other countries’ laws. YouTube’s platform rules apply to its handling of the channel, but the legal rules for a creator or claimant may depend on jurisdiction.

Keep a future 24/7 stream rights-cleared
Before putting a recording or playlist on a continuous feed, confirm that your rights cover the exact music, video, game footage, and other material used in that format and for the relevant territory. Keep permission and license records accessible. A tool that keeps a stream online does not grant rights to the content it plays.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a rights-cleared prerecorded YouTube stream, StreamNeo keeps uploaded video looping from the cloud, so no home computer or connection has to stay on. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube streams, not camera broadcasts. See StreamNeo or start the free day.
