Decide whether to continue or change plans based on when you can actually reach the venue—not the plane’s landing time—and what the event allows. A flight remedy does not automatically cover a missed event ticket.
What to do first when your flight is delayed
- Check the operating airline’s latest update. Refresh its app or website and confirm whether the flight is delayed, cancelled, or rebooked. If you subscribed to alerts, save the airline’s notice and timestamp. For U.S. itineraries, the Department of Transportation says a significant-delay or cancellation notice must use the email, text, or app-push method you subscribed to. Check the DOT’s refund and notification guidance.
- Contact the airline and the event host in parallel. Ask the airline for the current estimated arrival, available alternative routings, and whether a change affects the rest of your itinerary. Ask the venue, organizer, host, or ticket provider about late entry, transfer, resale, or whether someone else can attend. Those event options depend on the event’s terms; they are not airline passenger-rights entitlements.
- Work out when you could reach the event. Start with the latest credible landing estimate, then allow for getting off the plane, collecting checked baggage if needed, and travelling from the airport to the venue. Compare that arrival time with the event’s start and latest-admission rules. If the estimate is still moving, avoid making an expensive decision based on one provisional update.
- Compare staying on your itinerary with rerouting. Ask what the airline can offer before buying separate transport. Compare the likely time saved against the cost, connection risk, ground-transport time, and the event’s late-arrival flexibility. Whether an airline must offer a particular rerouting depends on the route and applicable law; do not assume it must put you on any carrier you choose.
- Keep the relevant records. Save your booking, disruption alerts, airline messages, any stated reason for the disruption, rerouting offers, receipts, and messages with the event host. These records may help with a later request to the airline, booking provider, card issuer, or insurer, but they are practical recordkeeping—not a universal statutory checklist.
- Choose a fallback if attendance no longer seems feasible. Ask the event host about transfer or an alternative way to attend, and check benefits on any existing insurance policy or payment card before taking on more costs. Do not assume the event ticket will be reimbursed.
How to decide whether to keep travelling or reroute
Use four questions together rather than treating the flight’s landing time as the whole decision:
- What is the latest credible arrival estimate? Prefer a current estimate from the airline over an earlier schedule or an unconfirmed alternative.
- How long will it take to get from the airport to the venue? Include deplaning and, where relevant, baggage collection as well as ground transport.
- What flexibility does the event offer? Check late entry, transfer, resale, or substitute-attendee rules directly with the organizer or ticket provider.
- Is there a feasible alternative? Compare its availability, total cost, connection risk, and actual time saved—not just its scheduled departure time.
If a change saves little time or creates a risky connection, staying on the current itinerary may be more sensible. If the event has a firm cutoff, ask the airline and host for options before committing to additional costs.
Passenger rights depend on your route and itinerary
United States
The U.S. Department of Transportation distinguishes a ticket refund from an airline’s customer-service commitments. If you choose to take a significantly delayed or changed flight, or an alternative flight the airline offers, DOT rules do not entitle you to a ticket refund. An airline’s customer-service plan may still provide amenities or compensation in some circumstances, so check the operating airline’s plan and the facts of your itinerary. Read the DOT’s refund guidance. It does not establish reimbursement for a missed event ticket.

European Union
EU passenger-rights rules generally cover flights within the EU, flights departing the EU, and flights arriving from outside the EU when operated by an EU airline. Assistance during a departure delay depends on its duration and distance. A departure delay of at least five hours can give you a right to reimbursement and, where relevant, a return flight. Arrival at your final destination at least three hours late may qualify for compensation unless extraordinary circumstances apply. Check the EU’s passenger-rights conditions.
For qualifying flights, the EU guidance lists compensation bands of €250 for flights of 1,500 km or less; €400 for flights over 1,500 km within the EU and other flights between 1,500 km and 3,500 km; and €600 for flights over 3,500 km. These are conditional flight-compensation amounts, not automatic payments for every delay, and they do not establish compensation for a missed event ticket.

Missed connections and code-shares
For a missed connection, EU compensation depends in part on how late you reach your final destination and whether the flights were on a single reservation, among other conditions. Check the complete itinerary and responsible operating carrier. For a code-share complaint in the arrangement covered by its guidance, Your Europe says to address the operating airline. Review the EU rules for your flight and connection.
EU rule changes announced in 2026
On 13 July 2026, the Council of the European Union said it had given final clearance to updated air-passenger rules. The Council said they will enter into force 12 months and 20 days after publication in the Official Journal. That interval alone does not establish a calendar application date. The European Commission’s Q&A describes future provisions, including a defined self-rerouting right; do not treat the announcement as proof that those provisions already apply. Read the Council announcement and the Commission’s explanation of the revised rules.

What flight rights do—and do not—settle about your event
Passenger-rights rules address remedies tied to the flight, such as assistance, reimbursement, or qualifying flight compensation. The official guidance above does not establish a right to recover the cost of a concert, game, convention, match, or other event ticket missed because of a delay. Check the event’s own terms and any existing insurance or card benefit separately; coverage, exclusions, documentation requirements, and claim limits depend on the applicable terms.
The European Commission says you can download its “Your Passenger Rights” app for free to check rights on the spot: see the Commission’s passenger-rights information.
