Set a clear boundary, redirect briefly, and escalate when needed: mute or remove a guest if their behavior is harming people or derailing the broadcast. Prepare these decisions before you go live, and keep control of the guest’s audio and video separate from moderation of audience chat.
Plan your response before the stream
Live broadcasts are harder to monitor because they unfold in real time, making it more difficult to prevent harm once it begins, according to GOV.UK guidance. A short plan gives you options when there is little time to think. The steps below are practical recommendations, not a universal protocol.
- Set expectations: Tell guests what the show is about and what conduct is unacceptable, such as harassment, slurs, threats, or repeatedly interrupting others.
- Choose escalation steps: Decide in advance when you will redirect, give a direct warning, mute or disable video, remove the guest, or end the segment. Serious or immediate harm can justify skipping straight to stopping the behavior.
- Assign chat coverage: If possible, have a producer or moderator watch chat while you host. Agree on how they can alert you discreetly and which actions they are authorized to take.
- Check the controls: Confirm how to control the guest’s feed and how to moderate chat on the actual platform or destination. Chat tools do not mute or remove a guest from your studio.
Respond in the moment
For a manageable interruption
Use a short, neutral redirect: “Let’s bring this back to the game,” or “I want to hear the other perspective now.” Avoid turning a minor disruption into a public argument. The aim is to return control of the conversation, not to win a confrontation.
If it continues
State the boundary plainly and name the next step: “Please stop interrupting. If it continues, I’ll mute you.” Then follow through if needed. Keep the explanation brief; extended debate can give the disruption more airtime and make it harder for the audience to follow the show.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For serious or immediate harm
Stop the behavior first. Mute or remove the guest, cut away from the segment, or end the broadcast if that is the safest available response. Do not prioritize the planned conversation over the safety and experience of the people involved. If threats or other serious misconduct occur, preserve relevant records and use the platform’s reporting process where appropriate.
Keep guest controls and chat moderation separate
A guest’s microphone and camera are controlled in the streaming studio or call interface. Audience comments are controlled through the destination’s moderation tools, and a multistreaming studio may not expose every destination’s chat controls. Decide who is watching each channel and test the relevant controls before the broadcast.

StreamYard guest controls
In StreamYard, hosts and co-hosts can use the People Tab to mute a guest’s microphone, disable their camera, privately message them, kick them, or ban them. StreamYard says guest authentication is required to ban a guest. See StreamYard’s People Tab guidance and guest-blocking guidance for the documented controls.
Moderating chat through StreamYard
StreamYard’s in-studio chat moderation is available for StreamYard On-Air, Facebook Pages, and YouTube. Other destinations’ comments need to be moderated on the destination platform itself. Its help page says Facebook Groups and Profiles are not supported for in-studio chat moderation, and comments from guest destinations cannot be managed there. Check the current destination-specific support details at StreamYard’s moderation and destination guidance; studio controls and labels can change.

YouTube live chat
YouTube provides options to hold potentially inappropriate live chat messages for review, with basic or strict moderation, as well as blocked words and slow mode. Channel owners or managing moderators can change automatic moderation settings. Held messages still require a human decision about whether to show or keep them hidden. YouTube Help cautions: “No system is perfect, but this feature can make it easier for you to moderate live chat messages on your live stream.” See YouTube’s live chat moderation guidance.
Twitch chat
Twitch documents warnings, timeouts, bans, AutoMod customization, non-moderator chat delay, blocked terms, link restrictions, slow mode, follower-only or subscriber-only chat, chat clearing, and Shield Mode. Availability can vary; Twitch notes that some features may not be available to everyone yet. Check the controls in your live dashboard and consult Twitch’s moderation setup guidance rather than assuming every channel has every option.

Choose controls by the problem they solve
| Need | Relevant documented control | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Stop a guest’s audio or video | StreamYard People Tab: mute microphone or disable camera | These controls manage a studio guest, not audience chat. |
| Remove a guest or prevent re-entry | StreamYard People Tab: kick or ban | StreamYard says banning requires guest authentication. |
| Review or restrict YouTube chat | Held-for-review messages, blocked words, and slow mode | Filtering is imperfect; a person decides what to do with held messages. |
| Respond to Twitch chat disruption | Warnings, timeouts, bans, AutoMod, and other documented restrictions | Some controls may not be available to every channel. |
| Moderate a multistream destination | Use the destination’s native moderation tools when studio moderation is unsupported | StreamYard’s in-studio moderation is destination-specific. |
Common problems and practical fixes
- You cannot mute the person from the chat panel: Chat moderation and guest-feed controls are different. Open the studio’s guest or People controls, or ask the producer to do it.
- A guest can return after removal: Check whether your studio supports banning and whether the guest has authenticated; StreamYard lists authentication as a requirement for banning.
- You are missing comments from one destination: Open that platform’s native moderation view and assign someone to watch it. Not every destination’s chat is manageable inside the studio.
- Auto-moderation misses a harmful message: Do not treat filters as a substitute for a person. Review held messages and have a moderator watch for content that slips through.
- You cannot find a documented control: Check the current platform dashboard and help page. Interfaces, eligibility, and feature availability can change.
